Work Text:
The world is full of mysteries. There are things going on which confound the general populace, and require strong minds to investigate. Luckily, Penny and his best friend Billy are ready to step up to the plate, and get to the bottom of them! The big mystery they need to solve is, of course, what they saw all those years ago, but they are willing to investigate smaller mysteries too.
Today, their aim is to investigate strange signals Penny has been using his newly developed tracker to locate the source of.
"Are you sure we should be here?" Billy asks, head poking around the corner of the gap in the fence. He had been a bit hesitant to investigate this area, but the end of Easter Break was fast approaching, and Penny was determined to do some investigations together before the end of the holidays, so had managed to convince Billy to come along.
"Of course we should. It's public property, and we are members of the public. Why wouldn't we be allowed?"Penny grabs Billy's arm and pulls him along, over the boundary of the sidewalk and the long grass at the edge of the Church's sunken terrace. "Your mom brought us here herself the other week."
"I just don't know if we are allowed here when it's not church time." Billy says, shaking off Penny's arm, and following him despite his objections. Billy might be more careful than he is, but Penny knows he wants to solve mysteries too, it's part of what makes them such great friends. "What are we looking for here anyway?"
"I'm trying to calibrate the device I'm working on. There must be something that caused it to go off during that talk they gave here."
"That was just the Sunday School talk about Easter going on for so long, I think it might have just been a low battery warning, the lady who leads the school likes to talk a lot."
"But I charged it earlier that day, how could it be a low battery warning? I'm sure there is something odd around here, and this place is so strange it has to be related."
"My mom said it used to be a pool but kept leaking so they turned it into a seating area."
"Hmm, interesting. What would have caused it to leak after all that time. This church is basically ancient, it's the first Christian Church, strange it would be around for so long and they suddenly claim the pool is leaking. It would be a cover up, or do you think the leak something to do with the creature we saw? Maybe it's been visiting here for longer than we thought!" Penny starts looking around the sunken area, trying to see if he could see any signs of anything alien or supernatural, or maybe a clue they could investigate.
"Maybe it started leaking into another world, and that's why they had to fill it in, so the other world wouldn't get angry at them for flooding their church?" Billy suggests, trying to connect what they know with the strange filled in pool. He starts looking around too. The two of them working in tandem to see if there was anything in the area that would indicate a connection to Birdblaster. There is a brief moment of excitement as they come across some feathers from a more normal bird.
"Do you think that Birdblaster is friends with the normal birds? Maybe we should look in the trees near the large arch, I've definitely seen birds over there before." Billy says, holding the evidence bag open for Penny to put the feathers in. It's a good point, and Penny agrees with him as he finishes bagging up the evidence. The device he is working on isn't quite up to scratch yet, but he has gotten a few weird readings around the outskirts of the church, so getting some more around the large arch nearby would be useful, to see if there is any connection to Birdblaster there.
Their plans are foiled however, by the lady walking her dog who sees them as she walks by the church
"Oh are you two boys picking up litter? That's so good of you. I know your mom'll be so proud of you Billy. " she says, as her dog noses around the entrance to the church grounds.
Penny tries to explain, but the lady won't hear it. It's tough to be two young geniuses solving mysteries when the adults won't listen but, it's just how these things go. Penny will work on the device more, and once it's fixed and working, they can come back and see if it picks anything up. Maybe they can do it under the cover of darkness in the winter, it might be fun to have to use flashlights, Billy gave him a cool one for his birthday last year, so this could be the perfect chance to use it.
The rest of the afternoon is lost to helping pick up litter in the gardens of the old church but, Penny muses to himself, it's not such a bad way to spend an afternoon with his best friend, plus they have a new avenue of investigation for next time!
