Work Text:

Marceline was sitting at an unmade fire with her new friends, Betty and Simon. They’re really just awesome! The two adults have been taking care of her since she met them. It’s almost like she has a real family.

“Simoon.. Betty, I have a question!!”

The two adults almost answered in sync,
“Yes?”

“Ok so uhh.. I was wondering, are you guys like.. married? Or like boyfriend and girlfriend and stuff. I dunno, I’m curious!!!

Simon replied,
“Well, she’s my fiance”

“What the flip does that even mean?”

Betty popped in- “Hey no swearing!”
Marceline scoffed.

“It’s when one of the partners asks about getting married, they said yes, but they haven’t gotten married yet.”

“Uuuuuuuuuuh…. why didn’t you get married then.”

“We were just really busy!” Betty replied.

“Booo!! You guys should do it now!”

“Marcy.. I don’t know if you understand how weddings work.”

“Uhm.. I totally understand how they work.”

“Alright girl, whatever you think.”

Betty searched through one of their bags to see what the three could have for dinner. Beans.. like usual.
“Marcy, me and Simon are going to make dinner. You can move around but don’t stay too far!”

“Mhhmmm…”

Marceline looked into one of the backpacks and found some wire cutters.. sweet! Perfect for her plan. Even a fence nearby!
She walked over to the fence and started trying to chop on it with the cutters. Being a seven year old, even though she is half demon, it’s… pretty hard to cut a fence.

“EEEEKKK!!”

Marcy finally got a decently big piece of wire off.
She moved closer to where Simon and Betty were sitting, but made sure to hide her project so she could keep it a surprise.

‘How big even are adult fingers..?’

She tried to make an estimate.. this looks kind of normal right?
Marceline tied the wires into little ring shapes. They looked perfect! Well she thought that, you might slice your finger if you move it wrong.

‘They’re gonna flippin love this!!’

‘Alright.. What else does a wedding need other than rings?
Maybe like.. confetti?’

Marcy squatted down and pulled a bunch of grass from the dirt. With every blade, she carefully made sure there was no dirt left on them. Just to make sure they don't get any dirt on their faces..
She stuffed all the blades of grass into a little baggie.
‘Hey whaaat! A wild flower! This is amazeballs!’
Marcy plucked that out of the ground too, then stuffed it straight in her baggie.
She stood stationary and looked around. More stuff.. maybe..?
‘Well.. I could stand on, like, a rock or something and be the dude who says stuff. Maybe it's ok if it's simple, I guess.’

“Marcy! The food is done, get your butt over here!” yelled out Betty.

“Coming!” Marceline yelled back.

On the way to their campfire she placed down all the things she collected near all her things. Marceline had a cute little backpack she carried around so she could keep all the weird trinkets she liked. And also for things like her best pal Hambo!

Marcy walked to the group's campfire with the cutest smile on their face.

“Aw man! Beans again!”

“Well girl, that's all we got! -
We're livin’ the beans life here Marcy!”
Simon said.

“Yep, that's just life.” replied Betty.
“Hey, what's that grin about?”
Betty smiled back at her.

“Hehe.. nothing.”

“Looks like our girl is planning..” Simon said in a silly tone.

“Uhm- Nuh uh! You have a problem with me being happy, bully!”

He giggled.
“Sorry Marcy, I'm no bully though!”

The three of them giggled throughout the night as they ate their dinner. It sounded like if you were listening into a family's house- they really were just like a real family.
Sometimes Marcy thought about calling them mom and dad but.. that's just weird. They aren't her mom and dad.. but really, it was like it was. Marceline had never had something like this before with her own family. She never knew what it was actually like to have a real family. But deep.. deep inside her guts she just knew this felt right. Even though the three of them lived in a wasteland, everything felt perfect with them. Marceline loves her best friends.

All done with her dinner, she chucked the empty can of beans straight to the floor, then let out a loud yawn.

Betty told her,
“Marcy, dear.. I think you need to get to bed now”

“Blehh! Okay!”

Betty took out Marceline's sleeping bag while Simon was cleaning up the junk from their dinner. Marceline walked over to where her backpack was and made sure to get Hambo out. She could never fall asleep without Hambo!

“Yaay! Thank you, Betty! I love you soooo much!”

“I love you too, Marceline! Sleep well!”
Betty patted the young girl's head.

Simon came over after just finishing cleaning.
“Night, Marcy! Sleep tight, I love you!”

“Thanks Simon, love you too..”
Marcy squeezed Hambo as she got comfortable.

Simon and Betty went to lean against the log they originally sat on during dinner. Even though they were sitting on the dirt, it didn't matter to the two of them. Nothing was wrong when they were together.
“Mmm.. I'm sleepy now too. Goodnight, sweetheart.”
Betty put her head on Simon’s shoulder.

Simon grabbed hold of Betty’s hand.
“Goodnight, my princess. I love you.”

Betty dozed off.

Simon stared off while watching his two favorite people peacefully sleeping. He thought about his own life.. how even like this, even in this situation, he was happy. Betty.. oh, Betty. She really stayed with him through thick and thin. Even though he almost became some crazy ice wizard, she worked on helping him stay sane through this curse. Who knows where the crown is now. Of course he still thinks about it, but it's far away now, where it can't hurt him. Simon also thought about how he always wanted to be a father.. he thought about it happening after he married Betty but of course, that never happened. They found Marceline a while ago, and it's gotten to a point where Simon almost feels like he's her father. He would never say that though.. her real father would probably bust in and punch him in the face. But even though it was unsaid, It was really like he became a father. Like he always wanted to be, with his dearest Betty. Sometimes you can find things in the weirdest of places. Simon finally dozed off. The last one to finally fall asleep.

The sun rose.. It was maybe around 8 o’clock? The three of them have gotten to a point where telling time doesn't matter too much.

Marceline woke up first. Shuffling out of her sleeping bag, she grabbed her backpack that was sitting right next to her. First, she took out the things she needed for the day. The rings she made from the fence, her “confetti”, and the wildflower she grabbed. Next, Marceline carefully placed Hambo her pack, making sure he was safe and sound for the day.
She eyed out the stone she was going to stand on for the “ceremony”.

She walked over to where Betty and Simon were sleeping…
Marcy shaked their shoulders, and said

“Wake uuuup!!”

If you were in an apocalyptic situation this would probably be a scary thing to wake up to, but Marceline already does this a lot to a point they’ve gotten used to it. Marcy just tends to get bored easily, or maybe is feeling lonely with the two of them being asleep. The first time she did that it actually terrified the both of them. They thought she was in trouble. She felt so bad during that day she put the both of them into a big hug, and squeezed them really tight.

The two had woken up..
Betty moved down her glasses and rubbed her eyes, while Simon replied,
“Yes, Marcy..?”

“Come with me, come with me!”

She ran off, but not far.

Betty said to her,
“Marceline, we just woke up, you know! Slow down!”

“Blehh, kay.”

Marceline was standing on top of the rock.
“Ok, ok guys.. Stand in front of me facing each other.”

Simon and Betty were obviously confused, but they just went along with it. Marceline loved making up random games for them.

She tried to make her voice sound like a grown man. But of course, it sounded funny,
“Today we are here for the marriage of the two lovely people, Simon and Betty! I'm your marriage guy and I marry people!”

The two partners giggled.

Marcy leaned over to Betty, and mumbled
“I forgot to give you this flower! Put it somewhere!”

“Ok, uhm.. say the vows or something.. Say 'em!!!”

Betty went first,
“I'm so happy we have a very cool marriage guy with us on this amazing day. I love you so much, Simon. I promise to be an amazing wife and caretaker to our dear friend Marceline.”
It was random stuff Betty made up on the spot. But still, she really meant it.

Simon was kind of staring off at Betty, he's always kind of been a nervous person, even in this silly situation. He finally thought of something to say-- it would probably be amazing and heartfelt if he had more time for it.
“Betty, I promise to be the best husband I can be to you. Even though we might be in a hard situation, I promise we'll stay together forever. I love you, my princess.”
Again.. Simon was staring at Betty. Even though she wasn't in a pretty white dress.. she was still just so incredible, so beautiful.

“Okay guys.. ring time, take these!”
She handed her make-shift rings made from the wire fence.
The two put them on. The two adults were smiling, just because of how much they loved how considerate Marceline is.

“These are-” Simon got cut off.

“No talking during the wedding, maaaan!”

He giggled.

“Alright now.. Kiss!”

The two went in for a small kiss.

“Hehee!! EWWW!!”
Marceline threw out her grass confetti at them.
“Yay! You're married now!”

“You're so silly, Marcy.” Simon said.

Betty added in,
“I love the rings, Marceline! Quite fashionable!”

“Thank you, thank you! The husband and wife should now… make Marcy some breakfast.”

“Alright girl, whatever you say.” Betty told her.

The three walked off together, chatting about how much they loved the make-shift wedding.

“Hey also, are you really a princess Betty?”

Betty giggled,
“Maybe.”
