Eldest daughter of Raiden Gumi's current head, Raiden Kunimi (国美), aspired to one day be the next head of Raiden Gumi worthy of her mother’s expectations. She dedicated herself into her studies and martial training in order to achieve her dream. Nothing distracted her from her goal, not until met a police officer named Kaedehara Kazuha.
Their fateful encounter happened when Miss Kuni saw an armed ruffian was causing trouble on the streets within her group’s territory. No Yakuza will tolerate hooligans messing around their turf and of course, Miss Kuni stepped in to subdue the man. The man resisted, and the situation escalated to where an innocent child was mixed in the crossfire. Miss Kuni shielded the child from the perpetrator, injuring herself in the process. Just when the ruffian was going in for the strike, Officer Kazuha arrived at the scene in the nick of time, successfully pinning the man down. The child sustained minor scratches but Miss Kuni injured her leg. She was clearly struggling and showed signs of discomfort when standing. Officer Kazuha swooped her up into his arms and escorted both Miss Kuni and the little boy to the hospital. Out of embarrassment, Miss Kuni argues that she is not one frail damsel and can walk by herself. Kazuha assures her that he sees her as a brave and strong woman. Not many would risk their safety to protect a stranger, but that doesn't mean she cannot rely on others. The handsome man’s sincere words struck a chord in Miss Kuni’s heart.
After her sprain healed, Miss Kuni visited Kazuha at his post, not because she wanted to see him again – or so she insisted, but to bring her handmade lunch as thanks for the other day. “Usually we are not allowed to accept gifts,” Kazuha says, “But there is nothing wrong with having lunch with a friend, right?” And so he excused himself for lunch and they enjoyed Miss Kuni’s handmade meal together at the nearby park. Kazuha thoroughly enjoyed her handmade lunch and could not stop praising Miss Kuni’s cooking. Happy with the praise as well as spending time with Kazuha, Miss Kuni would therefore bring refreshments whenever she visited. Inspector Heizou, Kazuha's colleague and friend from HQ, learnt of Miss Kuni’s visits and has often chided Kazuha for letting his guard down too much around her. Kazuha assures him that Miss Kuni is a noble and gentle soul that she has his utmost trust and respect.
Outside their lunch dates, the pair visited cafes, museums, and antique book stores. When Miss Kuni’s childhood friend, Navia, the Miss of Spina di Rosula, learned about her friend’s lackluster choice of dates and wardrobe, she flew over from Fontaine to spice things up. Outside of her school years, Miss Kuni’s wardrobe has only consisted of high quality Kimonos, simply just because she was most comfortable in them. However, such clothing would be unsuited for outdoor activities such as amusement parks and picnics.
Initially, Navia suspected it might be part of the reason for the more reserved dates, but she later learns that Kazuha was the one who was the one who initiated and chose those locations. What an odd pair her friend and her crush were, you could say they suited each other…But this won’t do! They are in their mid twenties!! They should be doing more lively activities together! The plan was set; Navia brought her friend out to buy more cute and casual clothes and convinced Miss Kuni to invite Kazuha to the amusement park for their next date.
On the day of their amusement park date, Kazuha was awestruck to see Miss Kuni in soft chiffon frills and a thin skirt. It’s not like Miss Kuni’s usual clothes did not flatter her, but it was refreshing and endearing to see her in a completely different style of clothes that highlighted other aspects of her beauty. And if he were to be a bit more honest, seeing Miss Kuni’s bare beautiful legs was quite heart-racing.
In the midst of their date, Kazuha noticed Miss Kuni’s slight discomfort with her new clothes and offered his jacket to wrap around her waist. Miss Kuni shyly admits that the skirt’s length was something she was not used to, but Navia made her realise that Kazuha has been accommodating by matching her sophisticated lifestyle and fashion. Even going as far as getting formal wear for their dates at high end restaurants and occasions. She felt that it is only fair that she puts in the same effort instead of everything being one-sided. Kazuha cares deeply for her comfort and assures her that she does not need to force herself. Though her wanting to return the consideration for him was so achingly sweet it fills his heart and sincerely thanked her for it.
On this day, they made a promise to take things slowly and support each other in this endeavour of change.
This event prompted Kazuha to confess to Miss Kuni a few days later. He officially wants to date her with marriage in mind. Though happy that they were mutually attracted to each other, Miss Kuni was hesitant because her dream of being her mother's successor and Kazuha being a police officer posed a huge obstacle.
She has yet to reveal that she was the heir of a Yakuza and was worried about whether or not Kazuha will be able to accept her. Even if by some miracle he does, will he quit his job for her? Or will she have to leave her family to simply become a housewife and have children instead? She continues to be plagued by her fears and worries that even the members of Raiden Gumi noticed that their young lady was not herself, which eventually reached her mother’s ears.
Ei summoned her daughter for a private talk. Mustering her courage, Miss Kuni admitted she fell in love with a police officer. To her surprise, her mother showed no anger or opposition, and silently urged her to continue. So Miss Kuni did, and in return, Ei shares that she was aware that Kuni was determined to take over the family business ever since she was a child, therefore she allowed her to learn the ropes of their family business. If Miss Kuni never wished to take over her role, she would respect her decision and let Miss Kuni live the life she wanted. She admitted that at times she would be worried that the role may be too much for Kuni. Kuni is by no means weak, but she has too much of a gentle and empathetic heart, which might give her trouble in deciding on difficult and painful decisions in the future which was never rare in this line of work. This is why she was glad that Kuni has considered the possibility of a normal life and she has no doubt she would thrive there too. After considering her mother’s words, Miss Kuni decided she will date Kazuha and determine the route of her life. She will hide the truth of her family’s business from Kazuha while trying for a normal life.
Then chaos ensued. Right after, Miss Kuni told Kazuha she would be happy to date him and that prompted Kazuha to formally greet Kuni’s mother and visit the Raiden Gumi headquarters. The members of Raiden-gumi, who too were supportive of their relationship, tried their best to pretend they were corporate men to an amusing degree. Ei even went as far to challenge Kazuha to a duel to test if he is worthy of her daughter. Though she approves of her daughter’s mundane life, she was not going to hand her over to any spineless man who could not protect her, especially with the dangers surrounding a Yakuza’s daughter. For some fortunate reason, Kazuha did not catch on to the truth of Miss Kuni’s family business and just thought of them as a unique and lively bunch. He even stood his ground during his duel with Ei, to even as far as deflect her signature move. Though he may have lost in the end, Miss Kuni was giddy with pride, and was glad she chose this man.
Their relationship grew and Kuni decided that she really wanted a life with Kazuha. Her family gave them their blessings and they both were happily wedded. Kuni continued to keep her family business a secret, but years into their marriage, Kazuha found out about his wife’s family lineage in the most unexpected way.
Ei invited the couple to the mansion to show them their family’s heirloom, a masterly crafted blade called the Musou Isshin. It was a sword Kazuha's ancestors forged long ago. He remembered his grandfather often told him stories about their clan’s history and showed him the paintings and blueprints of their prized work, the Mussou Isshin, commissioned by a distinguished family that protected the peace of Inazuma more than 200 years ago. Since the establishment of the current Teyvat laws, the activities of that family became restricted. Because they could not agree to how their laws were enforced, they continued to protect Inazuma in their own way as the Inazuman Mafia of today. Sword forging too became less sought for with the change of times and eventually the Kaedehara clan stopped crafting swords in Kazuha’s grandfather’s generation. What remains of the Isshin art are old records and sword testing techniques that are passed down in their family dojo as a sword art. Because of his grandfather’s stories, little young Kazuha romanticised the idea of a Yakuza and even considered being one in the future. Of course, all of his family was against the idea since they want their child to live a life without shackles. Thus in partial respect to his family’s wishes, he chose to be a police officer. Thinking that if he were lucky enough he would meet a Yakuza in his line of work. He knew it was an unrealistic and contradictory idea, but it was a little secret wish he had. Never would he have thought that he would unknowingly marry the daughter of that Yakuza his grandfather told him about. Fate is such a funny thing.
When he shared this story to his wife in the privacy of their home, Kuni was beyond any doubt shocked, confused, elated, deceived? No, it would be unfair to call it a deception. She too was hiding a big secret from her husband. All this time she was fretting over her family’s identity being exposed, but her husband, a police officer, has always admired Yakuzas? And his family had close ties with hers?? It took a while for her to process everything, but this revelation allowed them to have an open conversation with much needed clarity. Understanding their partner’s secrets was kept with good intention, their conversation ended on a good note and this undoubtedly brought the couple closer than ever.
This gave Miss–, no, Mrs. Kuni, lots of confidence in raising her little one growing in her belly.
