Work Text:

Eddie’s favourite dream is playing.

Any dream, really, is a favourite, because all too often when he closes his eyes, he has nightmares instead. Visions of his friends in danger, his father’s disapproving glare, the fate of the world in pieces at his feet… he hates that his nightmares are all based in fact.

His dreams though… his dreams are blissful little stories of fiction.

Today’s setting is the lawn of Anubis House, at the height of summer. The sun is shining down on them, the grass is soft and springy, and they’re finished with exams for the year. Trudy’s packed them a picnic fit for the gods, and everyone’s plates are as full as their hearts.

As is the case every time Eddie closes his eyes, Patricia is there. She’s rolling her eyes at him, but there’s a fond smile on her face, just the way he likes. Opposite sits Fabian, not paying a speck of attention to anyone because Nina’s still here, lying in the grass with her head in his lap, grinning up at him. Amber’s braiding her hair absentmindedly while she chatters away to Alfie, and KT rounds out their little circle, leaning back on her elbows so she can watch the clouds, quietly content.

No one is missing. No one is in peril. Nina is not the Chosen One, and Eddie is not the Osirian, because they live normal, happy lives.

They’re just students, and Eddie’s greatest problems in life are passing his maths final and figuring out the best way to ask Patricia to prom without her inflicting bodily harm.

In an hour, his alarm will go off. Five to three in the morning, so the girls can sneak down to his and Fabian’s room to resume plotting without anyone noticing. He’s grown accustomed to this being his high school experience, but it doesn’t mean he has to like it.

For one more hour though, he can keep dreaming.
