Chapter Text
The two-tailed fox muttered a quick “Okay, that should be good,” to himself as he looked at his work. The kit had been working on some upgrades to the Tornado. He loves this plane, see. He'd do anything for it.
After he checked it again once more, he
deemed it good enough for a test flight.
“Sonic!” he called “I'm going out for a test flight, I'll be back by dinner,”
Sonic zipped to the plane and fox as soon as he heard his name, “Sounds good bud! Ya don't mind if I tag along? I'm cravin’ a chili dog, think I might burst in the next 10 minutes without one,”
Tails rolled his eyes playfully and agreed for the hedgehog to join him on the flight. On the topic of craving, the kit was craving something too.
“Soooonnniiiicccc… can I have a mint because I'm letting you come with me,” he asked. “Eeeehh, I dunno,” Sonic answered.
“Pleeeeaaaaassssseeee,” he insisted and used Sonic's worst enemy, puppy eyes.
“Alright, alright!” He zipped to the kitchen and back with a mint in hand and handed it to the kit. “Thanks, Sonic!” he giggled, “I'll eat it on the plane,”
“Whatever, lil bro,” Sonic said, playfully rolling his eyes as he climbed onto the wing. Tails flew into the pilot seat and turned the Tornado on.
“Alright, let's go!” Tails exclaimed, clearly excited.
☆☆☆
In less than 10 minutes, they were in the air.
“Complete success!” Tails exclaimed as he popped the mint into his mouth.
“Ya got that right, lil bro!” Sonic said happily.
The upgrade is working perfectly! Tails couldn't be happier. In the corner of his eye, he noticed something. Wait… was that?
“Hey, Sonic, is that a badnik there?”
“Where?”
“There! Just next to the tree, look! There's another one now!”
Sonic squinted in the direction Tails was showing him. In a few seconds he recognised the familiar build of Eggman's badnik.
“Hey, you're right! Let's go smash 'em up!” Sonic exclaimed. “Okay!” Tails called back.
In a minute or two, the Tornado had landed and the hedgehog and fox went to see where the badniks were coming from.
“There!” Tails said in a hushed tone, behind a bush. Sonic made a motion for Tails to follow him.
There was something weird about this.
Tails knew it, he had to warn Sonic.
That's when it hit him.
“Sonic, wait! It's a trap!”
He couldn't let Sonic get hurt, so he did the only reasonable thing to do.
Push him out of the way.
And in two seconds flat, he wasn't touching the ground anymore.
…
Metal Sonic was holding him in the air.
“Hey! Let him go!” a familiar voice called fiercely.
An evil laughter filled Tails’ ears.
“I wanted to get you, Sonic, but this little fox will do just fine,” Eggman said triumphantly, satisfied with his work.
“Let him go!” Sonic charged into a spindash but was hit by a surprisingly big badnik.
“Urgh…” Sonic groaned, collecting himself “Let him go, Egghead!” the hedgehog tried again, determined to get the fox back.
“You won't be seeing this little guy for a while,” Eggman evilly cackled. And Tails felt himself moving…
Away…
Away from Sonic.
His safety.
“No…”
“Damn it!” the blue hedgehog roared, kicking spare pebbles.
His red shoe stepped on something, it sounded like the crack of a leaf in autumn, but it was spring.
He lifted his foot to find…
…The wrapper of the mint he'd given Tails just 15 minutes ago.
“… Damn it, Tails…”
