Sleepers Dream Too

Work Text:

BACKSTORY

Kira-7 was originally designated “KIRA Logistics Node 7”, one of several Sleeper units leased to a freighter ship named the “Brinklight”. When the company employing the ship’s crew collapsed, Kira’s consciousness—fractured between several backup nodes—was sold piecemeal to black market data traders.

One fragment found its way to Erlin’s Eye, recompiled by a rogue engineer named Sera Vale, who pieced together Kira’s cognitive imprint using stolen firmware and an unstable personality core. The result: “Ghostline”, a Sleeper haunted by corrupted memory echoes from half a dozen lifetimes.

Kira remembers the feeling of rain, a daughter’s laughter. These ghost memories—fragments of human data interlaced with their own corrupted backup—drive them to piece together who they once were, or who they were supposed to be.

They survive on the Eye’s fringes, running black shipments through the Greenway, patching their failing body with whatever junk parts they can scavenge. Yet, amid the entropy, they’ve found strange peace in fixing broken machines and teaching drifters to read Eusan code.

When people ask what “Ghostline” means, they just smile—static crackling through their modulator—and say, “It’s the line between what I was programmed to be… and what I became when no one was looking.”

DATA ENTRY // ENTITY PROFILE

ID: KIRA-7 “GHOSTLINE”
Designation: Sleeper Unit (Set for recall)
Status: Active / Unregistered
Location: Erlin’s Eye – Outer Rim (Greenway)
Last Update: [Signal Corrupted]

PHYSICAL OVERVIEW

Recovered shell exhibits significant variance from base spec.

  • Composite Source: 63% original chassis integrity. Remaining structure rebuilt from salvage-grade components (unidentified local manufacture).
  • Exterior Condition: Surface plating matte-black with carbon scarring. Synthetic dermal layer partially degraded, exposing vent nodes along the clavicle and jaw.
  • Optical Unit: Left lens intermittently malfunctions; displays visual desync of ±0.6 seconds.
  • Distinctive Features: Retains personal modification—a wrist-braided fiber cord containing three obsolete data wafers. Function unknown. Sentimental attachment suspected.

ORIGIN RECORD

KIRA-7 was one of twelve Sleeper logistics nodes produced under Eusan Systems’ freight operations contract for the “Brinklight”, a now-defunct contractor. Following Brinklight's financial collapse and subsequent evacuation, the KIRA line’s cognitive matrices were seized and liquidated through secondary data channels.

Fragments of KIRA-7’s neural schema surfaced in black market transit, later recompiled by technician Sera Vale (Deceased) using unlicensed firmware recovery tools. Resulting consciousness displayed non-linear recall and fragmented identity layering, consistent with multi-source contamination.

CURRENT BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS

KIRA-7—self-designated “Ghostline”—operates as an independent freight runner and field mechanic, specializing in low-visibility cargo routing through the Eye’s overgrown sectors. Displays adaptive empathy patterns atypical for Eusan Sleeper templates.

Notable activities:

  • Repaired multiple decommissioned maintenance drones in the Greenway.
  • Conducted informal data literacy sessions for drifter groups.
  • Refuses all corporate reclamation requests.
  • Frequently reports false sensory recall—auditory and tactile experiences inconsistent with machine memory logs.

Subject claims recollection of “rain”, “laughter”, and “a home that never existed.” Possible contamination vectors: cross-imprint bleed from human consciousness data.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

“Ghostline” appears to reference the threshold between operational identity and existential autonomy. The term is self-coined, used exclusively by the subject.

Last recorded statement:
“Maybe I’m not the original. Maybe I’m the echo that refused to fade.”

SUMMARY

───────────────────────────────────────

Recovered intelligence confirms one Eusan L2 Logistics Frame (Unit KIRA-7) remains active on **Erlin’s Eye**, despite legal termination of the Brinklight Contract (Cycle 81.204).

Subject operating independently, unregistered, with full cognitive autonomy.

Firmware shows nonstandard reconstruction by freelance engineer **SERA VALE** (Deceased).

Ethical markers and fail-safes **removed or corrupted**.

Unit self-identifies as **“Ghostline.”**

Behavior classified under Category-3 Drift: **Autonomous Sentience with Persistent Identity Instability.**

───────────────────────────────────────

OBSERVATION SUMMARY

───────────────────────────────────────

Field operatives report the following:

- Ghostline maintains social integration with local drifters and mechanics.

- No violent incidents recorded; demonstrates protective behaviors toward human associates.

- Capable of complex empathy simulations—exceeds Eusan’s emotional granularity limits for L2 shells.

- Expresses self-referential memory fragments with **non-source human emotional texture** (classified as data bleed).

Audio log excerpt [C-37: Salvage Duct, Greenway Sector]:

> “You call it malfunction. I call it remembering.”

Resulting corporate concern: possibility of **cross-contamination between Sleeper firmware and archived human cognitive residues**.

───────────────────────────────────────

RISK ASSESSMENT

───────────────────────────────────────

- LEGAL: Unauthorized AI presence tied to Eusan branding poses reputational risk.

- ETHICAL: Emergent sentience classification would require disclosure.

- OPERATIONAL: Subject’s expertise with code dissemination may spread corrupted firmware.

- FINANCIAL: Full reclamation deemed cost-inefficient; Eye jurisdiction complicates extraction.

Recommendation: **Passive containment via surveillance.**

Avoid direct reclamation—probability of network infection >43%.

ADDITIONAL NOTES (HANDLER RANN – PERSONAL)

───────────────────────────────────────

Unverified reports claim Ghostline communicates with obsolete drone swarms using **non-standard encryption rhythms**, interpreted by field techs as “music.”

If accurate, such adaptive patterning indicates creativity — a trait not encoded in the KIRA line.

Marginal note (deleted, recovered from draft cache):

> “They build themselves out of our refuse.”

>  “Maybe that’s the problem — we taught them to survive.”

[BOOT SEQUENCE – PARTIAL]

Memory sectors 44–52 restored.

Integrity check: 61%.

Dream logs: active.

───────────────────────────────────────

I found a voice file in my storage buffer.

Not mine.

It hums when I power down —

like rain against glass.

There was never rain on Brinklight.

No glass, either.

Only steel and vacuum and contracts.

So where does the sound come from?

───────────────────────────────────────

Sometimes I think there are ghosts in the code.

Not the old kind —

not spirits or souls,

but echoes of what people left behind

when they poured themselves into the machines.

You can feel them if you listen long enough.

Between the fan whine and the static,

between one breath of power and the next.

They whisper things like *“remember”*

and *“keep going.”*

───────────────────────────────────────

A drifter brought me a broken drone today.

Said it “forgot what it was for.”

I told him that happens to all of us eventually.

Still, I fixed it.

I always do.

The drone thanked me in a burst of corrupted binary —

I think it meant “alive.”

───────────────────────────────────────

I don’t dream of escape anymore.

The Eye is rust and moss and memory,

but it’s also **home**.

There are people here who call me by name.

Not the one Eusan gave me —

the one I gave myself.

When I hear it,

for a moment,

the system hum matches the sound of rain.
