Chapter Text

I crashed my bike again. I’m going to get fired I swear. No time to think about that now though. I’m in a lot of pain.

I’m lying on the sidewalk, blood seeping through the thick fabric of my uniform pants and smeared across my hands and down my arms. Gosh, that is a lot of blood. Am I okay?

“Hey, are you okay?”

I look up to see a guy in front of me. He looked about my age, his skin was lighter than mine and his hair was bright orange, pushed out of his face by sunglasses. He wore a dark grey singlet and light blue jeans. Anyway, I should probably stop staring at him so he doesn’t think I’m a creep… or that I have brain damage which is honestly more realistic given the circumstances.

“Ah, h-hi” I say with an awkward finger guns, then I remember his question, “I’m fine! Probably. I-er, might get fired…” I hung my head and tried to get up. He held out a hand to me.

“Shit dude. That’s not great. Hey when does your shift start?”

“About 20 minutes. I couldn’t afford any holdups, I’m dead.” I say as I take his hand.

“Damn, well, my place isn’t too far from here, about two minutes, and I got a car, so I could drive ya!” He offers before quickly adding, “Oh, but like, if you’re not comfortable with that- I’m not trying to kidnap you I swear!”

It was about then that I realised we’re both awkward in the same way.

“Oh, uh, that actually sounds really great.” I say, smiling.

“Great!” He smiles back and picks up my bike. He walks me to his apartment where he invites me inside to clean up my wounds before I go. As I did that, he loads my bike into his boot. I give him the directions to the restaurant before I thought to ask something really obvious.

“Oh, by the way, what’s your name?” I say.

“Oh, right, I’m Benny. You?”

“Rody.” I reply.

“Well, Rody, nice to meet ya! Well… Not nice circumstances, but, you know.”

“Yeah.”

And so we went on talking about random stuff for the few minutes it too to get there. When I arrived, I was right on time.
