Chapter Text
Jace and Harris. Everyone knows them. They share drinks and sandwiches in Religion. They always try to sit next to each other. They are working together for the science fair. Best friends, some would call them. Their blossoming friendship hasn't spanned over years and years of being classmates, but more of having similar interests. They're both smart kids in honor classes with high grades. They like very similar things and enjoy each other's company. Harris hasn't had many friends who actually like to be around him. They're all jocks and more annoying people. Jace has a friend group who's a little... special, we could say. But as long as the two have each other, they're fine.
It was a cold and rainy day, Harris was walking out in the rain to get to school. He had his headphones in listening to XO by Fall Out Boy. With no umbrella, he walked in the rain with a grey Green Day hoodie. The rain was getting in the way of his glasses. Every minute he had to dry them off. Eventually he just took them off and put them in his backpack when he got to a crosswalk. While he was waiting for the cross sign to turn green he heard someone running. "Probably a late student" He thought. Then he couldn't feel the rain. Something was covering him. "Hey!" A voice said. Harris looked to his right. It was Jace. "Hi! What's with the umbrella over my head?" Harris pointed up and asked. "I mean, you can't walk without an umbrella. Do you know what could happen? You could get sick and your hair would look weird. It's common sense, dude." Jace said. He put the umbrella in Harris' hand and grabbed another one for his bag. "I had a feeling that you didn't bring one so I got an extra." He said digging through all his books and papers. Once he got it out they started the trek to school.
Jace was talking about how his hands were a bit messed up after his orchestra concert. "I'm being serious, Harris. I had the lead part on the cello for basically the entire show! My hands hurt so much." Jace complained. "Aw, do you need me to hold them for you~" Harris asked sarcastically. "I know you're sarcastic, but that sounds really wonderful right now." Harris started to blush. He knew Jace wasn't gay, but he sure knows how to fluster Harris and get him into a bisexual panic. They eventually got to school and started to get their stuff for first period. Jace had honors English and Harris had social studies. Harris got his notebook and textbook while Jace stood right next to his locker, waiting. "So, we're working on the science fair together, right?" Jace asked as they walked to their first classes. "Of course. Unless, you were planning on working with someone else." Harris replied. "No, no, I wanna work with you." Jace said. "Hey guys! Wait up!" A voice said. Jace turned around. "Oh! Liam!" It was Jace's other best friend, Liam. Harris enjoys being around Jace's friend group, but doesn't always understand their humor. Once they got to Harris' classroom, he looked at them and said, "I'm gonna go guys..." Jace looked at him and said, "Okay! See ya later!"
Jace and Liam got into their classroom and started their bellringer. Everyone moves around the classroom to sit by their friends since the teacher was chill. Liam and Jace went to sit with Elizabeth and Amelia. They don't really talk to them, but Liam had to ask Elizabeth about some drama happening. "Elizabeth, what happened with Noah and Vivian?" Liam asked. "Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what they did." And they started to ramble, leaving Jace and Amelia. They've had a history, but it's been resolved and now they're neutral with each other. "I'm glad I don't have friends who get into random shit like that." Jace said in a joking tone, but he really meant it. Amelia chuckled. "Same. You and Harris are pretty good friends right?" "Yeah. But he's been kind of awkward lately. I don't know why." Amelia smiled slightly. She's had a feeling that Harris has had feelings for Jace, but never wanted to say it out loud or actually prove it.
In the social studies classroom, the one Harris was in, he was waiting for the teacher to get back. At his table group, he sits next to Noah, Vivian, and Ellis. He quickly snuck his phone to check his favorite bands Instagram account to see if there were any updates about their new tour. Ellis noticed he was on his phone and looked to see what he was looking at. "Hey, you know Good Kid?" Ellis said, talking about the band Harris liked. He looked at her, smiled, and said, "Yeah! They've got such good music!" "Totally. Amelia got me into them. You should talk to her about music, I think you two would get along." He thought for a moment. "Thanks. I might." He said as he put his phone away. He's not sure if Ellis is trying to get them together, so if he's just being nice.
The day goes by fast and Harris and Jace meet up at the school entrance to head home. "You wanna hang out at my place for a bit?" Harris asks Jace. "Yes! Please! My brothers keep bringing their girlfriends over at it gets really weird over there..." Harris chuckles.
"You know, you should probably get yourself a girlfriend, Harris. You've got good looks, good personality, amazing music taste, the list goes on."
Harris blushed. "Actually, I think Ellis was trying to get me with Amelia. He told me I should talk to her, but I don't know. She's... not my type. I'm willing to chat with her though."
"She's cool. I think you two would be good friends. Maybe more than that. I bet you fifty bucks that you two will end up together." Jace said. Harris knows he doesn't joke around about bets. Jace puts his hand out. "You on for a bet?" Harris looks at him, thinks, and asks, "Rules?" Jace cleared his throat. "1. You two have to end up together by three weeks. 2. You have to talk to her, no one else can. 3. You have to ACTUALLY make her have feelings for you." Harris doesn't want to do this. He doesn't really want to end up with... A girl. But he needs this money. "I'll do it for a hundred." Jace smirked and the two shook hands. "Deal."
