Painful Memories

Summary:

Nine is very touch starved, but the only touch he has had were attacks, so he is not prepared when Sonic tries to hug or pat him.

Notes:

I had written the summary for the authors note, but felt it was a better summary than the actual summary I had made.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The older boys surrounded Nine. He felt them grab him and start pulling on his tails. Their hold was too tight to run away from, so he tried to make himself as small as possible to slip away. Pain shot from where they tugged on him. Suddenly he felt one of them pierce the skin of one of his tails, drawing blood. His throat became sore as he screamed, but he was barely able to hear it.

As he lost his personal space, he was unable to make himself any smaller. One of the bullies walked around to his side as they scratched his extra tail. As soon as Nine was able to see him, he did his best to push him away.

“Buddy…Nine? Are you ok?”

As Nine recollected himself, he stared at Sonic who was now on the ground in front of him. His heartbeat raced in his ears and he noticed his breathing had become unsteady.

“I…” I didn't mean to.

Nine’s face felt warm. He wiped his cheeks, noticing that tears were falling down them.

“I'm sorry.” Sonic stood up but stayed where he was, giving Nine space .

“It's…” not ok. “It’s fine. I'm fine.”

Notes:

Sonic did NOT respect his personality space in Sonic Prime. I'm surprised Nine didn't push him away (instead of just side eyeing him).

In canon, Tails makes himself small (as seen in everyone's favorite example Sonic Forces/s as well as the end of the Metal Virus arc) while Nine makes himself big (he often stands on his metal tails or stretches them out). Since Nine's backstory is mostly the same as Tails', I imagine Nine probably made himself small as well when he was younger (switching at some point between the ages of 4 and 8).
