Chapter Text
After 9 p.m the X-district 5th lane was as good as closed. The lane led to nothing but a dilapidated apartment complex that had clear signs of improper management and moreover there was only one lamp post, crooked to a side by its old age:by the end of the path that was hardly sufficient to illuminate the dark lane.
When he was crossing the road it was 10p.m. Yibo usually got out of his night shift around this hour so walking home on this deserted, unlit road around this time was not something unfamiliar.
Yet before he could cross the narrow lane with only a few steps left to reach his run down apartment called home, his unfortunate life's remaining bit of luck also dispersed. A vehicle speeding up in his direction hit him in a blink of an eye. For a while he was in utter shock; unable to comprehend what just occurred or why he was suddenly not on his two feet. Then the realization dawned on him along with horror and dread. He was lying there on the road, unable to feel his body at all.
Then two figures which he couldn't identify the faces due to darkness, walked towards him. With great difficulty he managed to tone down the constant ringing in his head to make out what they were muttering,
"Is he still awake?"
"It'll be fine. From the amount of blood he'll probably be good as dead in a while. After all barely any person would walk in this road at this hour."
Boss said he wanted it handled. Looks handled to me.
Let's go before the snow storm stars"
The voices grew gradually faint as their steps faded.
Despite the critical situation Yibo wanted to laugh at the final turn of events, though he failed miserably. He tried to let out a faint chuckle but ended up spitting out blood and getting into a fit of cough instead. The irony of his whole life was straight up pathetic and laughable that Yibo was sure if he wasn't already dying he would have died laughing. Of course this was again the Xiao family. All of his life went straight downhill from the moment he decided to love that bastard. A choice he could've avoided but due to his youthful arrogance: he didn't.
When he heard the noise of a vehicle starting and driving off he realised he was all alone in this deserted road left to die like a pathetic lowlife.
"Everything.. everything started from the day I started liking you Xiao Zhan... My father...my mother they both lost their lives because of me....
Because I was foolish enough to think I could fight against all of them for you. I thought at least I would have you by my side.
But you left me alone when you could have saved me and my family. You discarded me as a fucking coward and ran away as they wished."
It was the day of the first snow of the season. He diverted his attention to the snow that drifted down, soft and weightless, settling on the silent street around him. They say the first snow brings good luck, that it marks a clean beginning, a gentle promise of better days. But as he watched the flakes melt on his cooling skin, he could only feel the irony of this eerie situation tenfold. Because nothing in his life felt new or hopeful. The snow fell as if to whisper renewal, yet all he could hear was a mockery aimed towards his woeful life.
The dark night sky was void of any stars nor the sight of the moon when he glanced up. Yet as the snow flakes fell down onto his face the chill dissipated until he was warm. Despite the warmness he couldn't shake off the feeling as if he was the loneliest person in the whole wide world at that moment. He had been alone for the past few years yet had never felt that loneliness as piercingly as of now. He was finally close to getting some leads on his father's accident, finally close to exposing the truth yet they won again.
By now his consciousness had started to slip away bit by bit, the ringing in his head quieting down to a peaceful silence. Even amidst the silence there was one thought that refused to fade away. As he felt his surroundings fading into a hollow dark abyss the thought that kept running through his head like a neverending mantra was,
"If I could go back in time I wouldn't even spare one single glance at you...
I'd walk away the moment we meet.
You and I getting entangled was the biggest mistake and regret in my life......"
<~>
From the moment Wang Yibo met Xiao Zhan everything spiralled into despair.
With his life crumbling apart bit by bit every hope was shattered. When met with a tragic end a second chance he longed for was bestowed.
A chance to make things right.
Yibo was determined to not repeat the same mistake of getting entangled with in his source of misery.
Yet he found himself questioning whether running away from him was truly the solution?
"..Give me another chance..I'll make things right. I promise I won't let the past repeat...."
