Chapter Text

"The doctor or the colonel"
It was basically the choice you had to make.

Your mom was really enthusiastic about the doctor, of course. He was handsome, the best cardiologist of the country while being so young.
Caring, gentle, tall (she thought it was very important to mention every time). The only inconvenience was that he was really busy, his work-life balance was a nightmare. He kept doing night shifts and working overtime, barely taking vacations. Mom said it was fine, he’s rich anyways. Sure, as if it was all that mattered.

On the other hand, your dad found a liking to the colonel. "He’s badass". No. Actually it was more something your little cousin would say but inside he probably thought the same.
He was regularly praised on the news for his admirable work. He was a fighter, he never gave up on anything, ever. Also tall and handsome. You couldn’t even tip the scales in one’s favor on that matter. He was strong indeed. Dad followed him on social media and kept showing me shirtless pics as if it was going to help me decide faster.

So why choosing a husband now? Good question.
Since you were a kid you never had a boyfriend, nor a crush, not even the slightest attraction for anyone.
You had friends, you were social. You just weren’t interested in love, no one ever stood out. You still loved romantic movies and everything, but in real life, it was never like that, you never felt that spark that everyone was describing.
Your parents, were devastated. They were the most loving couple you ever knew. They met when they were 15 and never broke apart until then. It was crazy, usually nothing like that happened. Probably because of their luck coming out of a fairytale, their daughter was cursed.
You thought several times you were aromantic, but no. You could feel it wasn’t that.
Anyway, when I became a teenager they kept asking me questions about my love life at every single dinner. Sadly, the answer was always disappointing and the same. You even saw a therapist about that. Your parents idea. You only had one session though. He quickly told you it was normal to not have a boyfriend at 15 years old. And you parents left a one star review because of that, saying nowadays therapists don’t consider the seriousness of their patients problems.

The years passed, high school went by with no high school lover. College went by with no college lover.

Your parents were lowkey going insane.
One day, as you were going home to see them for a few days for holidays, they set a trap.
A PowerPoint night, so far, no problem. Until your mom started the PowerPoint presenting your « the perfect husband ».
You started sighing, exasperated and was ready to stand up to leave. Except your dad held you still. You had no choice. You only half-listened. A certain Zayne apparently?
When your dad stood up and started presenting his choice as well you started to tweak. What were they trying to do exactly? Now it was Caleb’s turn. Great.

When he was done, they both turned to you and asked at the same time
"So which one??"

You were too surprised to even form a word.
After a few seconds :
"What do you mean which one? What’s the point of that presentation?"

Your dad answered :
"We’re setting you up on a date. We’re kind enough to offer you two choices. So, who do you
like better?"

“Are you guys insane?”

“Sweetie… you’re 23 now… you can’t tell me you still don’t have anyone? You know we don’t have to meet him. But your mother and I would feel relieved…”

I gasped :
“When will you understand that it’s okay to be single?? Some people never dated in their whole life and they’re okay?? It’s not because you’re living the dream love story that everyone wants the same.”

“Sweetie. We’re not saying that…” your mom is trying to calm everyone down “it’s just… we’re anxious. You’re far from us now… and we don’t really like the fact you’re all alone at this new hunter job.. it’s… dangerous…”

“Mom. I’m doing fine. Did you ever see me hurt? No, because I’m doing well. I passed all the physical exams and they’re very preventive about my health there.”

“One date.”

“Did you even listen to me??”

“One date and then we give up. Deal?”

“Ugh….”

They look at me with puppy eyes now. I know they’ll annoy my all holidays if I don’t accept now. It’s just one date right? I’ll have a good dinner and talk with a stranger, it can’t be THAT bad.

Right?
