Yoongi was, for lack of a better word, lonely. People tended to avoid him, whether it was due to the stoic expression on his face or the Slytherin emblem on his chest, Yoongi wasn't sure (though it was probably a mixture of the two).
Yoongi didn't mind all that much; at least people here didn't look at him with a hateful, disappointed look on their face (in other words, didn't look at him like his parents and elder brother), he was more ignored at Hogwarts... He just wishes he had one person to talk to.
It was the second day of the year, the first day mostly spent travelling to Hogwarts and having their dinner in the Great Hall as the first years got sorted into their houses. He was currently making his way down to the greenhouses; to his Herbology lesson. Yoongi enjoyed Herbology, Professor Longbottom was always so nice to him, and he always let him stay at break times where they could tend to the plants together.
The lesson had begun and they were listening to Professor Longbottom explain about what they were going to do throughout the year. This would usually be the time that the students giggle and chat but because they all knew that this specific Professor had cut the head off the Dark Lord's snake, Nagini, with the Sword of Gryffindor; no one dared disrespect him.
Once he had done explaining, people were told to pair up. All the students immediately ran to their friends and Yoongi felt a sinking feeling in his gut; he had no friend to pair up with.
His head hung between his shoulders as he waited for the other depressed soul to be singled out from the group, scuffing his shoes on the dirt floor.
"Um, excuse me." A slightly high pitched voice sounded, accompanied by a tap on his shoulder. Yoongi turned and looked at the figure, slightly shorter than him and he was smiling like the god damn sun. "I couldn't help that you looked a bit down..." He continued, lips turning down at the corners, "But if you want, I can be your partner this year!" He said, the smile coming back out in fall force, smacking Yoongi right in the eyes.
Yoongi squinted slightly, looking the boy in the eye. Yoongi was incredibly good at reading others and this boy had no malice in his eye, no, he looked genuinely curious and kind.
"Uh, sure. Why not." Yoongi said lowly, lips quirking up into his own (relatively less offensive) catlike smile. "I'm Min Yoongi, 14." He said, holding out his small hand (yet his hands had begun to grow and he didn't know when they would stop).
"Nice to meet you, Yoongi." The boy practically beamed, "I'm Jung Hoseok, 14 too!" He heartily gave Yoongi's hand a slap instead of the usual shake.
Yoongi had no idea that this meeting would lead to the greatest friendship Yoongi had experienced.
"Hey, Yoon." Hoseok smiled calmly as he patted the seat beside him.
"What's this?" Yoongi asked, spotting the array of sweets surrounding him on the table.
"Oh, my sister sent them." Hoseok smiled fondly, "She's older than me, and she finished Hogwarts last year since she also inherited our Dad's magical ability. She kinda looks like me, except she ended up pretty." Yoongi frowned slightly, looking up at Hoseok who was pouting slightly, fingers fiddling at a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans.
"What are you talking about?" Yoongi half heartedly slapped Hoseok's bicep, "Just because you aren't pretty doesn't mean you aren't attractive." Yoongi frowned, "I think you're attractive but in a manly way." Yoongi's ears turned slightly red as he realised the weight of what he said.
But Hoseok was smiling widely, perfectly straight teeth on full display as he pulled Yoongi into his arms. "Thank you, Yoongi." He murmured into the shorter's neck, "And for the record, I think you're very pretty." Yoongi just continued to blush.
"So, do you have a sister?" Hoseok asked, pulling away from the flustered boy.
"No, but I have an older brother who's the same age as your sister. He looks a lot different to me though. Stronger jaw, bigger eyes?" Yoongi said softly, "Better according to my parents." Hoseok stayed silent, he'd never heard Yoongi open up about his feelings or home life, and Hoseok felt his heart break when he noticed how down Yoongi looked.
"Yoongi, Yoongi!" Was called from behind, and Yoongi looked over his shoulder to see Hoseok, his best friend, running up to him, looking scruffy with his shirt buttons in the wrong holes, hair flyaway, and his collar up on one side, down on the other.
"Oh, hello Hoseok." The year was one month in and Yoongi had already had his 'Complaint Letter' from his father that always came every so often.
He left the Great Hall in a rush, tears finally slipping down his cheeks once he reached his bed. He'd now been in a downer all day with blotchy cheeks and puffy eyes.
Yoongi sniffled, head low to try to hide his face from the one person who actually paid attention to him.
"Yoongi?" He heard from in front, Hoseok finally having caught up with him. "Are... Are you crying?" Yoongi felt his heart crumble away because the last person he wanted to show his tears too was Hoseok, the only person who didn't think Yoongi was a complete weirdo.
"Hey..." He spoke softly, trying to lift Yoongi's face by cupping his cheek; but Yoongi stayed stubborn, head staying at his feet as he sniffled and swallowed back those tears.
But then - Then those arms wound around Yoongi protectively. Hoseok had grown in that month and was already taller than Yoongi, and even though Yoongi felt self conscious and stupid he still clutched onto Hoseok the moment those arms were wrapped around him, his hair turning from the normal black to a colourless white as he began to sob into Hoseok's shoulder.
"Oh Yoongi..." Hoseok sighed out, holding Yoongi more protectively as he petted the soft hair at the back of Yoongi's head. "Come on, there's a secret passageway where we can be alone, would you like that?" Yoongi said nothing, but nodded vigorously as he was led away, their hands joining and fingers locking together.
They reached the passageway, and Hoseok abruptly sat on the floor, patting the space next to him (not before summoning a cushioning charm there and lifting his body to place one beneath himself).
The moment Yoongi set himself on the (quite comfortable, thanks to Hoseok) ground he was once again wrapped up in long arms, pulled against a warm chest.
"Come on, tell me what's on your mind, I won't judge you Yoongi." Yoongi looked up through his lashes, clumped together from his tears.
"M-my dad... He sent me a letter... I don't know what to do- make him happy, I-I-" but his voice was cut of by resurfacing sobs as he curled up to Hoseok's shoulder, sobbing into his shirt.
Hoseok hushed him with a soft voice and even softer hands smoothing down his back, "Show me the letter?" Yoongi nodded, pulling the parchment from his shoulder bag and handing it to Hoseok (who didn't let go of Yoongi, he opened it with one hand while stroking at Yoongi's hair with the other). It read;
Yoongi,
Your mother and I are starting to get tired of your ridiculous behaviour. First you argue with us about which blood type is better (and we assure you, it is pure blood), and now we hear of you befriending a half-blood! Do you know how disgusting and vile those creatures are? We are disgusted with you, how dare you defy your parents, we raised you to be a respectable pure-blooded young man with skill and talent, and you pay is back by frolicking with the type of person we specifically told you not to talk to? I'm sick and tired of your shit, Min Yoongi, me and your mother are gobsmacked at how much of a disappointment you are, we knew we should've just had your older brother and not bothered with a second child, you're a waste of our time and effort. I really wish you would be different but I guess we'll have to accept what a failure our son is. You disgust me.
As for another issue... Your brother told us about the boy who kissed you, how you sat there and took it... We can only hope you aren't gay on top of everything else.
Your Father
Hoseok could hardly believe what he just read; how could a father talk to their own son that way? A young one at that. Hoseok turned his head to look at Yoongi who looked completely ruined. Tears staining his pale, almost translucent-looking cheeks, lips swollen and red from being bitten on, eyes puffed up and watery, and his small, round nose completely red.
"Yoongi..." Hoseok sighed, wiping tears from the high cheek bones as he pulled Yoongi back against him. "There was no need, seriously, no need for that letter. You're wonderful, intelligent, charming... I know I can't make this right but Yoongi, I was you to know that you're amazing inside and out, don't let your father's words bring you down."
Hoseok's face was far too serious and soft looking that Yoongi believed that this was Hoseok's true thought, and as the younger pressed a kiss to his forehead Yoongi's eyes fluttered closed, allowing himself to lean against his (now taller) best friend who looked after him more than anyone else in the world.
"Let's talk to professor Longbottom about this. I'm not going to stand by and let you cry when I only want you to be happy."
"Well, I'm afraid I can't do anything but offer my support with this issue." Professor Longbottom said. "He patted Hoseok's shoulder, gifting him with a rather handsome smile as he had his arm wrapped around Yoongi.
"I'm sure you'll look after Yoongi in the meantime?" He asked, receiving a nod and a small sniffle from Yoongi. "I'm wondering, could Yoongi perhaps visit your family this summer? It would be good for him."
Hoseok smiled. He had written to his parents about the sweet little Slytherin he had befriended, and they already seemed smitten, not only with the idea of a cute metamorphmagus with 'marshmallow cheeks' but also the fact that their young, unorthodox son had found a friend who was very accepting of him, the little pep of happiness in his language in the letter.
"They seem to like him." Hoseok said happily, "Yoongi, would you like to visit home with me?" He asked, gentle, seeing Yoongi nod shyly before being wrapped up in long arms.
Professor Longbottom watched the two friends fondly, his eyes warm.
Yoongi bit his lip as they got off the Hogwarts Express. Hoseok was holding his hand in way of assurance but it only made Yoongi's hand feel more clammy than what it already was.
But seeing Hoseok's positive and loving nature, his parents had to be the same, right?
Once they passed through the wall they were greeted by a fairly short woman, Hoseok being already taller than her, and a man who walked towards them who looked just like Hoseok.
He was quickly pulled into a soft hug along with Hoseok from his mother, her warm smile greeting him that made him feel comfortable and happy.
"You must be Yoongi? It's so nice to finally meet you." She said warmly, holding one of Yoongi's hands in hers. He smiled, bowing slightly, sure that she would be happy from her traditional Korean roots.
"Yoongi!" Hoseok's sister, Jiwoo, said happily. "Do you remember me? Last year?" She said, her eyes bright, just like Yoongi remembered. And how could he not? There were a group of Gryffindor's that had circled around him and were chanting out various slurs such as 'queer boy' and 'creep' just because he had been stroking at a Mimbulus Mimbletonia plant.
Yoongi nodded in response to her question and received a brief hug, "I'm glad you're finally okay, and I'm sure my brother will look after you well."
Yoongi looked up at his best friend, receiving a handsome smile and nodded. "I know he will."
