Work Text:
Skip stood in the bathroom, staring at the mirror. With their hoodie on you could barely see their chest, but that didn’t really matter to them. Unlike most trans people (or agender in their case) they didn’t experience gender dysphoria. Like, sure, a binder would be nice, but they could live without one. This fact kind of made them feel out of place in trans spaces.
They shrugged off that thought and left the bathroom. As they headed down stairs the smell of whatever their mom was making for breakfast hit them. Bacon. The smell was bacon. They liked bacon, but they were never hungry in the morning so instead they headed to the door to pack their bag for school.
“Sara! Aren’t you going to come eat breakfast?” their mom called from the kitchen. They froze. That name they did hate.
“No mom, I’m usually not really hungry in the morning, I’ve told you this before,” they responded as they finished packing their stuff.
“But-”
“I’ve gotta go to school now!” they quickly called out, leaving the house. They sighed, as they heard the click of the lock. Of course it wasn’t actually time for them to leave for school but they needed some time for themself.
They took their bag off and grabbed out their CD player and CD. It was Chappell Roan, which they had come to love when they still thought they were a girl. Putting the CD in the CD player they quickly put their headphones on and cranked up the volume to block out most outside sounds.
They put their bag back on and began walking to school. They hated walking to school at first but had come to find it peaceful if they did it earlier. When they got to school the doors were still closed, which meant they had time to relax beforehand. They sat down on one of the benches in front of the school and texted Jeremy, their only friend since moving here.
Skip> Hey Jer, you up?
They waited.
Jermey> yeah, what abt it?
Skip> I’m already here.
Jeremy> ughh,, I’ll be there soon
They laughed and put their phone up, waiting for Jeremy.

They sat in first period math, Jeremy in the seat across from them, waiting for bell to ring and the teacher to walk in. But when the bell rung a substitute walked in.
Well that was okay.
“Before we start I’m going to take attendance,” the sub said to the class. But when she started attendance she called by first names. Shit. The closer she got to calling their name the more they felt like they were going to throw up. “Sara?”
“Here…” they said quietly. They could see Jeremy glance at them from the corner of their eye. Why were they born a girl? They honestly preferred if they were born a boy, because at least then they wouldn’t be named ‘Sara’.
~~
“First names, why first names?” they asked Jeremy as they walked down the hall together.
“I dunno, maybe-”
“Jeremy!” Michael called out from behind them.
“Oh, Michael!” Jeremy called out to Micheal, seeming to forget they exist entirely. Micheal walked up to the two of them and began talking to Jeremy as they walked. Skip followed them because they didn't have anyone else to talk to.
After trying to talk a few times and getting ignored they just walked off.
“Hey it’s that weird girl,” they heard a voice say as they stopped at their locker. The voice belonged to Chloe Valentine, the most popular girl in school.
“What girl?” Brooke asked.
“Her,” Chloe said, pointing at them. They honestly didn’t care about being made fun of, they just felt like screaming because they were being called a girl.
“Oh, I thought she was a guy,” Brooke said, sounding embarrassed.
They quickly grabbed what they needed and headed to their next class.
This life was a nightmare.
