Mission: The Purrfect Birthday Party

Summary:

The ADA prepares a surprise birthday party for their President behind his back. The plan? Luring him outside under the guise of a street overrun with cats. They end up going to a Cat Café before finally returning to the Agency, where Fukuzawa is surprised with presents.

Work Text:

It had been oddly quiet in the Agency that morning. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary: Kunikida hunched over his meticulously organized desk, muttering numbers and deadlines under his breath as if the very air were insufficient to contain his productivity; Dazai was conspicuously absent, his usual chaos replaced by silence, and Atsushi's presence was, coincidentally, also nowhere to be see. Ranpo idly sucked on a strawberry lollipop, exuding that peculiar confidence that made him seem simultaneously unimpressed and dangerous; Yosano, as always, attended to her medical duties with quiet diligence; Kyoka and Kenji shared whispered exchanges, their laughter faint but unmistakable; and the Tanizaki siblings were being their usual selves.

Yet, something felt amiss. Maybe it was the air, it was somehow, still, that day. Or perhaps it was the fact that Kunikida hadn't yet run outside in search of his work partner. He didn't know.

"President", the familiar voice of the Agency's physician spoke, "I was just looking for you".

Fukuzawa’s eyea softened imperceptibly at the sound. Yosano. Even now, after all these years, the weight of her presence carried something quietly formidable, a kind of calm strength that never sought attention but demanded respect nonetheless. He remembered the first time he had truly seen her —not the confident, composed doctor she was now, but the shadow of the woman she could have become. The paths that had tempted her —dark, unyielding roads lined with inevitability— were ones that could have swallowed her entirely if left unchecked.

And now, years later, he watched her again, the same fire tempered with wisdom, the same brilliance sharpened by experience. Pride surged within him —not the arrogant pride of possession, but the quiet, almost paternal satisfaction of witnessing a life reclaimed, of knowing he had glimpsed potential where the world saw only ruin. Yosano was a testament to what it meant to endure, to resist the gravity of one’s darker impulses, and to emerge not unscathed but unbroken. She was exactly who she was meant to be; not merely surviving, but thriving.

"Dazai and Atsushi have slipped away from work —though I suspect it was Dazai who coerced poor Atsushi into following him," she said, an amused smirk tugging at her lips. "I’ve heard they’re wandering down a street overrun with cats. Atsushi would probably be thrilled to meet so many fellow felines."

Fukuzawa froze. Cats. A street full of cats.

"I was planning to retrieve them", she continued, "But I fear the animals would attack me if I went there empty-handed".

"You should bring some dried sardines with you", Fukuzawa finally said, his voice calm, measured, as if dispensing official advice. "If it’s a place overrun with cats, a full handful should suffice".

Yosano raised an eyebrow, a soft sigh escaping her lips. "Fried sardines?" she repeated, tilting her head in mild exasperation. "And pray tell, where am I supposed to find an open store at this hour that sells them…"

Before she could finish, Fukuzawa moved with a precision that made her blink. In the blink of an eye, he produced a small handful of fried sardines from the folds of his sage-coloured yukata, holding them out with the same detached composure he reserved for official matters. His expression remained perfectly neutral, betraying none of the amusement that surely danced behind his calm eyes.

"This should be about enough", he said, voice plain, cool, almost bureaucratic in tone, as if handing over sardines were no more remarkable than passing a report across a desk.

Yosano blinked, then laughed softly, the sound rich with genuine delight. "Wow, President", she drawled, a playful lilt to her words, as if savoring the rare glimpse of him letting something absurd slide through the cracks of his stoic demeanor. Her smile widened, eyes glinting with amusement and a faint trace of admiration. "You've got quite the collection of these. But they do give off a strong stink. I'm not sure if I should really carry these myself."

Fukuzawa didn't think Yosano was the type of person that had trouble with holding smelly things.

"Tuna cans are also—"

Before he could finish his phrase, Yosano chimed in, "What if you went with me?"

"... Me?"

"We two", she confirmed. "You bring the sardines and I make sure it is not a boring walk."

A street overrun with cats.

"If Kunikida won't go..."

"I knew you’d say yes, President!" Yosano exclaimed, her smile widening, bright and playful, as if she had already counted on his acquiescence. There was no room for argument in that smile, only the quiet certainty of someone who knew exactly how to nudge him where she wanted him.

So, with measured steps and a faint sense of disbelief, they exited the building together. The city sprawled before them, streets already whispering with the distant meows and rustling of unseen feline inhabitants.

When they finally arrived at the infamous street, Fukuzawa braced himself, ready for the ambush of feline chaos Yosano had warned him about. He tightened his grip on the sardines, eyes scanning every corner, every rooftop, expecting the mewling, the hissing, the sudden leaps from shadows.

And then he blinked.

The street was… almost empty. Only a single cat remained, perched imperiously on a discarded crate as if it alone had been appointed guardian of the alley. Its green eyes tracked their approach with mild curiosity, utterly unconcerned by the humans or the sardines.

Fukuzawa’s lips pressed into a thin, unimpressed line. Only one? One cat? He raised an eyebrow at Yosano, who was already smirking knowingly beside him.

“They’re gone”, she said, voice calm, almost teasing. “Apparently, Atsushi and Dazai managed to scare the rest off”.

Fukuzawa’s internal reaction was immediate and entirely unsurprised. Of course they would've run from the chaos that Dazai and Atsushi caused together.

The lone feline yawned, stretched luxuriously, and then jumped down to trot casually out of the street, as if even it had decided the area was no longer worth defending. Fukuzawa sighed, adjusting his clothing with precise movements, sardines still clutched in his hand.

Then, two figures emerged, weaving through the shadows in a way that could only be described as theatrical.

Dazai, of course, was at the forefront, walking with exaggerated nonchalance, hands tucked into his coat pockets as if the entire city owed him a personal bow. Behind him, Atsushi scurried, ears flattened slightly, tail of panic twitching  in perfect synchrony with his steps. The contrast was almost comical: Dazai, deliberate chaos incarnate; Atsushi, earnest chaos on the verge of collapse.

“You two”, he said flatly, stepping forward, sardines dangling uselessly in one hand. "Yosano and I have been looking for you."

And cats, too.

Atsushi, cheeks pink, fidgeted nervously, glancing between Fukuzawa and Dazai. “I-I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to—he made me follow him, I swear!

Dazai, as if on cue, threw a languid hand to his chest and tilted his head back, letting out a mock gasp. “Ah, did Kunikida finally surrender?” he said dramatically, voice dripping with theatrical amusement.

Fukuzawa’s lips pressed into a thin, unimpressed line. He allowed his gaze to sweep over the scene: Dazai striking a pose as if the world itself were his stage, Atsushi fidgeting like a child caught between panic and embarrassment, and Yosano calmly watching with that faint, knowing smirk that made everything feel simultaneously under control and utterly ridiculous.

“Very well”, Fukuzawa said, tone deadpan, sardines still awkwardly dangling. “Let us retrieve you both before the situation escalates".

As they walked back toward the Agency, the morning sun casting long shadows over the nearly deserted streets, Dazai stretched his arms and yawned dramatically. “You know”, he said, tilting his head with mock solemnity, “There’s a new cat café that just opened near the Agency. It might become our café's rival".

Yosano, walking beside him, let out a soft, skeptical hum. "I’m certain it won’t surpass the Agency’s café. The facilities, the ambiance… even the coffee is superior."

Dazai’s grin widened. “Ah, but you see, Yosano, the true measure of a café is not in its walls or its chairs, but in the charm of its patrons”. He glanced meaningfully at Atsushi, who shuffled awkwardly beside him. "Don't you agree, Atsushi?"

The youngest did not manage to form a proper response.

Yosano, however, saved him from more embarrassment by raising an eyebrow. “Hmm”, she mused aloud, tapping a finger to her lips. “Well… it might be amusing to see how it compares. But I maintain my belief: nothing surpasses our Agency’s café”.

Dazai clapped his hands together. “Splendid! A contest! We’ll see which café reigns supreme!” He began skipping lightly ahead, already mapping out the route in exaggerated, theatrical motions.

Atsushi trailed behind, sighing. “I guess… we’re going?”

"We should return to the Agency first", Fukuzawa reminded.

Yosano simply smiled faintly, her eyes glinting with amusement. “It will be fine”, she said softly, almost as if she were promising him that, for once, he might survive an absurd detour without incident.

And so, with Dazai skipping ahead like a child in a parade, Atsushi trailing nervously, and Fukuzawa and Yosano maintaining a semblance of order, the group made their way to the new cat Café —an adventure that promised far more chaos than any ordinary morning could.

The bell above the café door jingled as they entered, and immediately the air was filled with soft mews and the warm, comforting scent of coffee. Cats of all shapes and sizes padded between tables, leapt onto windowsills, and sprawled lazily in sunbeams.

Dazai immediately flopped onto a sofa with exaggerated flair, arms stretched behind his head. “Ahhh… paradise”, he murmured dramatically, as a small black-and-white kitten hopped onto the armrest beside him.

Fukuzawa merely observed, sardines now tucked safely in a pocket, and allowed himself a small, almost imperceptible smile. He moved carefully through the room, watching the cats and the staff with quiet attention. They are orderly… and well cared for. Not bad at all, he thought. His tone remained calm as he spoke softly to Atsushi, who was crouched low, wide-eyed, trying not to startle the cats. “It’s alright, Atsushi. Just observe for now, no sudden movements”.

Atsushi nodded, though his shoulders were tense. “I… I just didn’t expect so many of them”, he whispered.

Yosano, arms crossed but smiling faintly, knelt down to scratch a calico cat behind the ears. “This one reminds me of Mii-chan", she murmured, glancing at Fukuzawa. “Perhaps bit more playful”.

Calico cats always reminded Fukuzawa of Natsume-sensei.

They finally settled at a corner table, the sunlight spilling across the wood and a few cats weaving between their legs. Fukuzawa sat upright, sardines safely tucked into a pocket, and observed the room with a quiet attentiveness. Atsushi hovered beside him, still tense, while Yosano crossed her legs gracefully, one hand idly scratching a tabby that had claimed her lap.

A cheerful waitress approached, notebook in hand, smiling politely. “Welcome! Would you like to start with some drinks? Coffee, tea, or something else?”

Dazai leaned on the table with a casual elegance, eyes half-lidded, and gave her a smile that seemed deliberately dangerous. “Ah, my fair lady", he said, voice smooth and theatrical, “I could not possibly choose from mere words. Perhaps you would do me the honor of selecting something for me."

The waitress blinked, cheeks faintly pink, and stammered slightly. “Uh… well, we have a special blend of cat-themed lattes today…”

Dazai leaned closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “A special blend, you say? And is it as exquisite as the smile of the lady who recommends it?”

"Dazai..." Atsushi muttered, but was not able to bring himself to interviene.

The waitress giggled nervously, scribbling something down in her notebook even if nobody ordered anything yet. Dazai leaned back, satisfied, while Fukuzawa and Yosano exchanged a look: hers teasing, his quietly exasperated but strangely fond. Meanwhile, Atsushi simply hoped the man in front of him wouldn’t completely disrupt the café.

"Hmm", Yosano hummed, tilting the menu toward herself as she scanned it with calm deliberation. "Two meow-ffins and a Kitty Cosmo, please."

Atsushi hesitated, eyes darting between the menu and the cats weaving between chairs. "Erm… Yarn Ball Cake Pops for me," he said, voice soft. He glanced at Yosano, then added timidly, "And… I’ll have the same drink she ordered, please".

The waitress nodded politely, jotting everything down, and then turned toward Fukuzawa. “And for you, Mister?” she asked, her tone light and cheerful.

Fukuzawa’s attention lingered on a sleek black cat weaving gracefully between tables. He followed it with quiet fascination, noting the gentle flick of its tail and the soft padding of its paws on the wood floor.

“Hmm,” he murmured, not entirely to the waitress. His eyes lifted briefly, still calm but focused. "Kitty Cat Doughnuts and a le-mew-nade, then," he declared, voice measured and collected. There was a softness there, subtle but unmistakable, in the way he observed the cats and spoke with quiet precision —as if making the smallest moment orderly and pleasant in a world full of chaos.

Dazai leaned back in his chair, eyes half-lidded, a slow grin spreading across his face. He tapped a finger against his chin theatrically, drawing out the moment like it were a performance for an audience of one hundred cats.

“I believe… I shall have something suitably elegant”, he said, voice smooth and measured as if choosing a weapon instead of a dessert. “Ah, yes… a Whisker-Whip Latte, the largest slice of Catnip Cheesecake you have, and… two Yarn Ball Cake Pops for… companionship.”

Atsushi blinked. "Companionship?"

Dazai waved a hand carelessly. “Naturally! One for myself, one to honor the feline overlords who preside over this establishment”, he said, eyes following a tabby gracefully hopping onto a chair. “They must not feel neglected.”

The waitress hesitated, glancing between the group and the cats. “Uh… very well, sir,” she said, jotting down the order. “Will that be all?”

The group nodded their heads in agreement.

Atsushi’s nod was tentative, almost apologetic, as if silently begging the universe not to let Dazai cause further chaos. “Yes… that’s everything”, he murmured.

Yosano’s nod was calm, precise, her hand still resting lightly on the ginger cat that had claimed her lap. “That will do", she said softly, eyes flicking to Fukuzawa with the faintest hint of amusement.

Fukuzawa nodded as well, voice measured but gentle. “Yes. That will suffice", he said, eyes scanning the café quietly, taking in the cats, the sunlight, and the soft bustle of the other patrons. He allowed himself a subtle sense of calm —the kind that came from knowing that, for a brief moment, nothing urgent or disastrous demanded his attention.

Dazai also joined in, letting out a cheerful "Yup!"

The waitress nodded and reported to the kitchen staff.

“So,” Yosano said softly, her fingers absently scratching the ginger cat in her lap, “How often do you come to cafés like this, President?”

Fukuzawa tilted his head slightly, voice calm and measured. “Rarely. There is little time for leisure outside of Agency duties. Though I must admit, this is… pleasant.” His eyes flicked to a gray cat sprawled lazily on a windowsill. “Peaceful, in a way.”

Atsushi glanced up at him, voice quiet. “I… I’ve never been to a cat café either. It’s… nice. Calmer than I expected.”

"Of course; it's not often that you reunite with your feline family", Dazai teased.

Yosano’s quiet laughter mingled with the purring of the cats, and even Fukuzawa allowed himself to settle a little deeper into the chair, sardines tucked safely in his pocket, enjoying a rare moment of calm camaraderie.

Quite shortly, the waitress from before returned, carrying a tray balanced with care. “Here we are. Your drinks and desserts,” she said, setting down a plate of colorful meow-ffins, Yarn Ball Cake Pops, Kitty Cat Doughnuts and their drinks with little cat-themed garnishes.

The moment the tray touched the table, Dazai picked up his glass, swirling it lazily. “You know”, he said lightly, as if discussing the weather, “Sharing a drink together feels so fleeting. Wouldn’t it be more romantic to share something… eternal? Perhaps a double suicide, just the two of us?”

There was a beat of absolute silence.

Atsushi’s eyes went wide. “D-Dazai?!” He nearly knocked over his drink in panic.

Yosano didn’t even look up from her meow-ffin. “You say that again,” she said calmly, “And I will make it eternal. Medically.”

The waitress froze, color draining from her face. “I— I’ll just— let you enjoy your order,” she said quickly, retreating with impressive speed.

Before Dazai could add a single word, Fukuzawa spoke. His voice was gentle, but carried unmistakable authority.

“Dazai”, he said quietly, lifting his gaze to meet his employee's, “That is inappropriate. Apologise.”

Dazai blinked, then laughed softly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Ah… my mistake. Poor timing”. Ge gave a casual wave in the waitress’s direction. “My apologies. Occupational habit”.

A cat chose that moment to hop onto the table, plopping itself squarely between the desserts. Fukuzawa calmly reached out and guided it away, his expression softening as he stroked its head once before setting it down.

“Let us”, he continued evenly, “Enjoy our food. Without alarming the staff.”

Atsushi exhaled shakily. “P-Please.”

Dazai only smiled, unfazed, lifting his drink in a mock toast. “Very well. To coffee, cats, and surviving another lecture from our beloved President.”

Fukuzawa took a sip of his le-meow-nade, the faintest hint of amusement touching his eyes. “Progress”, he said quietly.

They settled back into their seats, plates and drinks laid out before them. The cats padded lazily between their legs, occasionally sniffing at a Yarn Ball Cake Pop or a meow-ffin, and the warm sunlight spilled across the table.

Fukuzawa picked up a Kitty Cat Doughnut, observing the delicate frosting and the little chocolate ears. He took a small bite, allowing the sweetness to linger briefly before swallowing. As he chewed, his mind wandered slightly. Ranpo would like this place, he thought. Quiet corners to observe, curious creatures...

Atsushi picked up his Yarn Ball Cake Pop with a tentative hand, eyes wide as a curious cat approached his plate. “I-I don’t know if I should… give it to them?” he whispered.

Yosano, already enjoying her meow-ffin, glanced at him, expression faintly amused. “They’ll take what they like”, she said calmly. “Just watch and enjoy.”

Dazai, of course, ignored both cats and common sense. He leaned toward a gray tabby, cooing theatrically. “Ah, little friend, this is your destiny —to taste the finest desserts in this café!”

Fukuzawa allowed himself a small, quiet smile at the absurdity, eyes briefly scanning the room. The cats, the laughter, the gentle camaraderie… it was a rare kind of peace. He reached for his le-meow-nade, sipping slowly, and let his mind dwell for just a moment longer.

Yes… Ranpo would like this place.

The bell above the café door jingled as the group stepped back into the street, the warm sunlight of the morning spilling over them. Fukuzawa adjusted his coat, sardines safely tucked in his pocket, and allowed himself a quiet, contemplative sigh. The faint warmth of the café, the soft purring of cats, and the gentle laughter of his companions lingered in his mind.

Atsushi trailed behind, still a little flustered, cheeks pink. “I didn’t think it would be… that enjoyable”, he admitted quietly, glancing at the cats padding along the street.

Yosano walked beside him, a soft smile on her lips. “Sometimes, Atsushi”, she said gently, “The simplest moments are the most… enlightening. And the most fun.”

Dazai leaned back, arms behind his head, grinning. “Ah, a morning well spent! Cats pleased, desserts consumed, chaos infused in measured doses… and all under the watchful eye of our beloved President.”

Yosano glanced at the group, a small smile on her lips, and tilted her head thoughtfully. “I suppose… the Agency’s café is still superior”, she said softly, “But this… wasn’t bad. It had a certain charm, I’ll give it that.”

Atsushi nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. “I liked it. The cats, the desserts… it was... relaxing”, he admitted quietly.

Fukuzawa, hands folded calmly in front of him, allowed the faintest twitch of a smile. “I agree”, he said softly, eyes scanning the street before settling on the group. “Perhaps a good break from the Agency's usual chaos.”

Atsushi glanced at him, hopeful. “We could… come again sometime?”

“Yes”, Fukuzawa replied quietly, voice calm but warm. “It would be pleasant.”

And with that, they returned to the Agency, the soft chaos of the morning lingering like a quiet warmth in their steps, leaving behind only the faintest traces of laughter and small, fleeting peace.

The Agency building loomed ahead, familiar and steady after the warmth and mild chaos of the cat café. Fukuzawa walked alongside Yosano, Atsushi, and the ever-dramatic Dazai, still with the sardines tucked inside his yukata's pockets.

As they entered, however, a sudden burst of voices stopped him mid-step. “Surprise!”

Fukuzawa froze, eyes widening ever so slightly, as the rest of the Agency emerged from their hiding spots. Kunikida had put aside his paperwork, Ranpo was grinning, the Tanizaki siblings smiled with Kyoka and Kenji and even Atsushi had brightened noticeably. Yosano leaned against the wall with an amused smirk, clearly in on the plan.

Colourful banners reading “Happy Birthday, President!” hung across the walls, and a neatly decorated cake —complete with tiny, edible cats perched on top—sat in the center of a small table, waiting to be cut.

Fukuzawa’s usual calm composure held, but his eyes softened, scanning the group before him. “This is… unexpected”, he said quietly, voice steady but gentle.

Dazai grinned broadly, stepping forward and dramatically offering a hand. “Ah, President! We simply could not allow the day to pass unnoticed. You have endured so much chaos, so many crises… and yet, you remain impeccably composed. Today, it is your turn to enjoy a bit of chaos of a more… celebratory nature!”

Atsushi stepped forward shyly, holding a small wrapped gift. “Happy birthday, President”. His voice was tentative, but his smile was genuine.

Fukuzawa took a slow, deliberate breath, allowing the faintest twitch of a smile to appear. “You all went to this much trouble for me?” His voice carried quiet appreciation, steady but soft.

Kunikida, adjusting his glasses with an almost imperceptible blush, muttered, “Of course. It’s… important to acknowledge hard work.”

Fukuzawa’s gaze softened as he looked at each member of the Agency —his team, his responsibility, his chaos and his calm. For once, he allowed himself to feel genuinely appreciated.

Ranpo, unable to resist, leaned in with a grin. "I knew mentioning cats would be enough to lure you outside".

Fukuzawa’s lips twitched ever so slightly. “Indeed,” he said quietly, eyes meeting Ranpo’s with a hint of amusement. “It seems you know me better than I expected.”

Fukuzawa allowed himself a brief, almost imperceptible moment of reflection, his gaze lingering on Ranpo. Since the day he had first met him, he had quietly observed the boy’s brilliance, his confidence, and his unshakable curiosity, all wrapped in a mischievous energy that seemed to defy the Agency’s usual rhythm. Ranpo’s keen intellect and uncanny intuition had always impressed him.

Over time, he had come to appreciate not only Ranpo’s skill as a detective but the subtle ways he understood people, anticipated their needs, and occasionally even softened the rough edges of the team’s chaos. It was a respect that ran deeper than mere admiration —a quiet gratitude for having someone in the Agency whose brilliance and loyalty were unwavering, someone who could see through the surface of things with a clarity that Fukuzawa himself valued more than words could express.

Grinning like a cat, Ranpo stepped forward. “For you, President”, he said, handing over a neatly wrapped box. “I thought you might appreciate something… clever. Not that it would be hard to find something befitting someone like you.” Fukuzawa took the present with quiet hands, a soft, approving glance meeting Ranpo’s playful gaze.

One by one, the members of the Agency stepped forward, each holding a small present or card, their expressions a mix of pride, nervousness, and barely contained excitement.

Kunikida followed, adjusting his glasses and clearing his throat. “It’s… organized in chronological order”, he muttered, handing over a carefully cataloged folder. “I considered it important to ensure the presentation was methodical. Happy birthday”. Fukuzawa allowed himself a faint, private smile, appreciating the thoughtfulness and precision behind the presentation.

Fukuzawa took the gift with steady hands, and for a brief moment, his calm gaze softened as it met Kunikida’s. He has changed so much since he first met him, Fukuzawa thought quietly. Once so rigid, so consumed by rules and his own ideals… yet now, he balances duty with care for others, discipline with patience. He has grown into someone truly respectable, someone who carries both responsibility and the trust of this team without ever letting it weigh him down unnecessarily.

The thought lingered, quiet and firm, as Fukuzawa offered a small, private nod. “I appreciate this”, he said, voice calm but warm. “Your thoughtfulness is noted.”

Kunikida’s lips twitched faintly, barely perceptible, but Fukuzawa caught it. Even his subtle gestures speak volumes. He has become someone worthy of admiration —not just as the vice-president, but as a person, he reflected, slipping the package carefully into his hands.

Kyoka stepped up next, her small frame carrying a modest, slightly awkwardly wrapped package. “I… I made this”, she said softly, voice almost drowned in the general bustle, “I hope you like it.”

Fukuzawa took the gift gently, his fingers brushing hers briefly, and as he did, his gaze softened. Kyoka…, he thought quietly, once trapped in a life she never chose, bound by the Mafia’s cruelty and expectations. She carried it all silently, her strength hidden beneath layers of fear and restraint. And yet, now, she is free. She acts by her own will, guided by her own sense of justice and care, not by the chains that once held her.

He allowed himself a small, private nod. She chose to survive, to grow, to protect others in ways I could only hope to guide. That courage, that quiet resilience is remarkable.

He met her eyes briefly, offering a soft, approving nod. “Thank you, Kyoka. I will treasure it”, he said calmly, voice steady yet warm. She blinked, a faint smile tugging at her lips, and returned to her place with quiet satisfaction.

Kenji and Yosano presented their gifts together: Kenji handed over a neatly wrapped book and Yosano an elegant scarf. “Happy birthday, President”, they said in unison. Fukuzawa accepted both, offering a soft nod and words of quiet thanks, noting the care behind each gesture.

He wasn't surprised when the book Kenji gave him was about cows. The boy was always so full of energy, so unguarded, so eager to connect with everyone around him. He carries no pretense, no hesitation —just sincerity, curiosity, and a desire to help in whatever way he can. He reminds the Agency of the joy in small things, the value of unselfconscious effort, and the warmth that comes from pure, uncomplicated loyalty.

Fukuzawa’s lips twitched in the faintest, private smile. He may not be the most strategic, nor the most disciplined, yet his presence steadies the chaos in a subtle, invaluable way. His energy is a kind of quiet strength for itself.

Dazai stepped forward with a flourish, producing a small, slightly absurdly wrapped package from seemingly nowhere. “And here, President! Something utterly indispensable!” he declared, eyes sparkling with playful mischief.

Fukuzawa took the gift, fingers brushing Dazai’s theatrically extended hand. Dazai, he thought, ever unpredictable, ever chaotic, and yet… invaluable. He thrives in the storm of this Agency, often bending the rules, testing limits, and pulling everyone into his theatrics. And yet, beneath the endless jokes, the flirtations, and the absurdity, there is loyalty —an unspoken, steadfast devotion to those around him.

The Tanizaki siblings approached together, Naomi carefully holding the gift while Jun'ichiro peeked over her shoulder, fidgeting slightly but clearly eager to participate. “Happy birthday, President!” Naomi said politely, her voice soft but sincere. Jun'ichiro nodded in agreement, looking a little awkward but earnest.

Fukuzawa accepted the gift with steady hands, his gaze softening as he observed them. The Tanizaki brought balance to the team: Naomi, so gentle, observant, and considerate, with a quiet strength that often goes unnoticed, and Jun'ichiro, a little more brash, but reliable in his own way, protective of those he cares about.

The room buzzed with quiet anticipation as Kenji and the Tanizaki siblings carefully lifted the birthday cake from its tray. Naomi steadied the base with meticulous hands, while Jun'ichiro hovered nearby, offering a helping hand. The cake itself was a charming mix of simple elegance and small personal touches: little chocolate cats scattered around the edges and a soft, flickering glow from the candles.

Finally, the cake was placed gently before him, perfectly centered on the table. Fukuzawa’s gaze swept across the assembled team, his eyes softening. The warmth of their effort, their care, and the quiet chaos surrounding it all pressed gently against his usual reserve.

He allowed himself a faint, private smile. This was what it meant to be appreciated, not just for what he did, but for who he was, there among them.

Ranpo leaned closer, whispering with a grin, “Go ahead, President. Make a wish… and try not to be too stoic about it.”

Fukuzawa exhaled slowly, calm yet touched, as the flickering candlelight reflected in his eyes. “Very well”, he murmured, reaching for the knife. The moment was fleeting, chaotic, and warm —but entirely his.

The blade cut smoothly through the frosting and he carefully lifted the first slice onto a plate with the practised skill of a former assasin. The room seemed to breathe collectively in quiet cheer.

Kenji clapped his hands softly, his enthusiasm infectious. “Yay! Nice one, President! That looked perfect!”

Ranpo reached over with a mischievous grin, trying to swipe a bit of frosting with his finger, only to be swatted lightly by Yosano. “Don’t even think about it!” she warned, though her tone was more playful than harsh.

Atsushi accepted his own portion eagerly, and even Yosano allowed herself a small smile as she settled in with her slice. Fukuzawa took his plate, sitting with quiet composure, and for a few rare moments, simply observed.

All of them… chaotic, brilliant, unpredictable, yet steadfast in their own ways. They’ve grown, they’ve changed, and they’ve made this place feel like home.

He lifted his fork gently, tasting the cake, and allowed himself the softest, private smile. The warmth, the laughter, the teasing, the care—it all pressed gently against his usual reserve.

For once, President Fukuzawa was not merely the overseer of the Agency, the calm in the storm, the bearer of responsibility. Today, he was celebrated. Today, he was simply… among them, quietly cherished and appreciated, in the middle of their lively, imperfect, and irreplaceable family.

FIN.

Notes:

Happy birthday to Fukuzawa!! I didn't know it was his birthday until I searched up all the cast's birthdays, so I had to rush through it :') This clearly has inconsistencies and mistakes, plus a LOT of mischaracterisation, but overall, I think it is pretty decent!
This was supposed to be a deep, serious fic in which I portrayed Fukuzawa's opinion on each character, but in this and that, it became this...

Fun fact: I wanted Mori to make a cameo at the end by indirectly sending Fukuzawa a present (because their not-exactly-friendship-friendship needs to be studied) but decided to just leave it as it is
