Work Text:
Kyouka has learned to despise boredom in its many forms over the years.
Thankfully she’s rarely bored nowadays. Mornings before work are like a dance between her and Atsushi, with one cooking and the other in charge of cleanup, and both racing to get dressed and out the door on time.
Work at the Detective Agency is likewise hectic. Even on slower days there’s always paperwork, research, and filing to do, and the busy days are filled with active cases to solve. There’s never a dull moment and Kyouka is grateful for the chance at such a life.
Especially compared to the last three years at the Port Mafia.
Most days she was no better than Kouyou's pretty porcelain doll, existing only to be dressed up and posed as an accessory. Then she trained under Verlaine and suffered through his involved and often graphic lessons on human anatomy and killing techniques.
There was a brief time that she craved boredom, even if it meant sitting alone in the dark, dank dungeons for hours on end. Because an eventful day meant a kill order from Akutagawa sent to her cellphone. A day filled with blood and entrails, with more fuel for her nightmares, more guilt weighing down her heart.
The Agency has been a balm for her soul, and a cure for her boredom.
But she’s learned that even boredom can be good sometimes.
The weekends are the calmest moments for her and Atsushi. With no work, the pair tend to lounge around the dorm. Sometimes they watch a K-drama or a random anime, sometimes they both read for hours, and other times Kyouka gets sucked into a game on her cellphone while Atsushi watches.
Boredom now doesn’t feel like her senses being plugged with cotton, doesn’t feel like a noose slowly tightening around her neck. It’s a quiet, peaceful thing that she can enjoy. That brings her back to when her parents were still alive and she was just a normal girl.
She’s grown to love boredom again.
