If life gives you tomatoes, steal a kiss

Summary:

Sakura is tired of Sugishita always initiating kisses. If not for his height...

Work Text:

There's something that still bothers Sakura about Sugishita Kyotaro.

Sure, they had already talked about many things. As a couple who communicated well—easier than expected—they now knew each other well.

Sakura didn't mind the little arguments they had as a strange courtship ritual that only they understood.

No, another detail began to irritate him until he admitted it truly bothered him.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Sugishita asked him.

Even now, Sakura was annoyed at looking up because of their stupid height difference. He tilted his chin to meet Kyotaro’s eyes. Haruka had grown properly in recent years, but Kyotaro was still excessively tall for his age. Haruka accepted he’d always be at least a head shorter. He glanced up often in resignation. What a huge, damn imbalance.

Today, they were both wearing their summer hats to protect themselves from the sun. They had gone to school to look after the garden during the holidays, as part of an inherited tradition.

“Like what?” Sakura deflected the question, turning away and walking to fetch some more fertilizer from the other side of the roof.

They set the subject aside. Sugishita bent to set the fertilizer and check the roots. That year, the tomatoes had some minor problems growing. Shortly before vacation, Sakura found Sugishita singing a lullaby to help the plants grow better. Suo had tricked him, but Haruka didn’t say so until he finished singing to the radishes.

Both then and now, Sakura noticed these were rare times Sugishita bent below him.

Sugishita often hunched, so Sakura knew his height bothered him too. It wasn’t something he could control—just genetics. Sakura wasn't stupid and wouldn’t reproach his boyfriend for that.

No, Sugishita’s height or their physical difference shouldn’t be a problem if Sakura learned to take advantage of it.

Like right now.

Sakura stood behind Kyotaro, placed both hands on his shoulders to get his attention, and leaned in slightly.

“What's wrong with you today?” he asked, looking up.

The real problem was that Sugishita’s height always meant he initiated kisses, so Sakura had to ask him to lean down, which he found awkward. For once, he wanted to steal the kiss. Haruka smiled and moved in to kiss him.

Haruka cupped Kyotaro's jaw with one hand, leaned in, and gently bit his boyfriend’s lower lip before pulling away, brushing his chin with a mischievous touch.

“Nothing's wrong. I already did what I wanted to do,” he smiled, licking his lips.

Kyotaro had been stunned for a moment, his hat falling onto his shoulders in the process. Fortunately, his grandmother had tied them with a ribbon so they wouldn't blow away in the wind.

When he had time to react, Kyotaro grunted something unintelligible and returned to the plants. Sakura noticed that his ears were flushed from something other than the sun. He still blushed easily.

He adjusted his hat before helping him with the fertilizer.

Sakura didn't know it, but now a little competition of stolen kisses had begun, one he was determined not to lose.
