Chapter Text
Chapter 1: Prologue
Kara was happy.
It was a quiet kind of happiness, the kind that needed no words or fireworks to show, and to untrained eyes she might have seemed more sleepy than happy. But Lena knew, and she watched as Kara sat in the window nook she'd made her, eyes all over the city from the height of the penthouse, the cup of cocoa steaming in her hand, and underneath the sweater the soft blue glow of her skin.
Lena approached her. Sensing her, Kara sighed contentedly and leaned back so her head rested on Lena's stomach. She smelled lovely, the scent of the freshly taken shower and that silly kids’ strawberry shampoo, and Lena stroked the messy honey curls, earning some soft purring.
Lena bent forward and kissed Kara on the mouth. It was a quiet, tender kiss, but Kara was always easy to entice; even after an afternoon of lovemaking she was eager to grow the contact, with the quiet but deep moan building in the back of her throat and her hand trying to hold some part of Lena even if she had to bend backwards and sideways.
Lena chuckled and released her. With Kara's movements her sweater had pulled up; now the glow from her bioluminescence caught on the ring, and the stone projected faint rainbows on the wall. It wasn't a diamond; Lena had sourced another mineral off-planet, had managed to find something sparklier and stronger and she and Kara were the only ones on Earth who wore it. It made Lena very happy to think about that.
Kara must have had a similar thought, for she took Lena's left hand and kissed it. Her face was radiant as she gently led her into the nook.
Lena cuddled into Kara, curling up inside the warmth, the blue light, the strawberry shampoo. She threw her legs over Kara's lap and let her arms envelop her, smiling when Kara's cheek went to rest on her head.
Lena was happy.
