What Are You So Scared Of?

Summary:

What are the critters afraid of? Let's see!

Work Text:

Nyctophobia

It was a dark and stormy night in Critter Valley. But that did little to deter DogDay as he entered his room, ready to hit the hay. He turned off the light in his room, leaving only the nightlight by his bed as the only source of light in the room.

He was very aware of how silly this was. Sue him!

As he climbed into bed, he nestled into his pillow, ready to board the train to Sleepytime Junction. But just as he was nod off, a sudden flash of lightning briefly turned night into day, followed by a crash of thunder. All of a sudden, the entire room was plunged into complete darkness.

"D-dang it." DogDay whimpered. "Power's out."

Well, that's just great. He can only hope Rabie wouldn't be stupid enough to fly around in this weather.

Ophidiophobia.

"So you say you got a new pet?" Bubba asked.

"Yup!" Hoppy answered with a grin. "Just wait here. I'm gonna get him."

As she ran off to retrieve her pet, the rest of them were left to wonder what it could be.

"What could Hoppy possibly want as a pet?" Kickin wondered.

His answer came in the form of Hoppy bounding back into the room with her back to them.

"Okay, guys!" She giggled. "Meet my new pet, Wiggles!"

Turning around, she revealed a little hognose snake coiled around her hands. Before anyone could say anything, their attention was grabbed by a familiar yowl and a thud against the ceiling. They all looked up and saw a visibly shivering CatNap, hanging upside down on the ceiling via his embedded claws with his back fur and tail ramrod straight.

Automatonophobia

Bubba hated going to the mall. The only reason he was here at all was because Bobby pestered him into joining her and insisted h get himself some new clothes. Once his girlfriend picked out a store, she pulled him along.

But his eyes fell upon the one thing he dreaded:

The white, faceless mannequins modeling some of the clothes that were for sale. Bubba knew they weren't alive and he did his best to not look at them, but he could just feel their nonexistent eyes boring into the back of his skull. His heart raced and sweat dripped down his forehead as he struggled to ignore the lifeless figures.

"Hey, Bubba?" A voice asked.

That snapped him out of his trance as he looked to Bobby holding a shirt.

"Here, try this on." She offered. "I think it looks cute!"

Coulrophobia

"Thanks again for helping clear out my attic, Kickin." Picky thanked.

"No prob, Picks." He replied.

As he went to pick up another box to carry down, he heard the sound of Picky gasping in delight.

"Oh my gosh! Mr. Butterbrain!" Picky squealed, pulling out a clown doll. "I haven't seen you in forever!"

Kickin's pupils shrunk the minute he saw the doll. Picky hugged the doll tightly, causing it to squeak. Shortly after, there was the sound of shattering wood and rapid footsteps fading into the distance. When the pig turned around, she found Kickin gone, a few of his feathers, and hole in the wall leading outside.

Claustrophobia

After getting their keys a the hotel's front desk, the Critters made their way towards the elevator. All except Crafty, as she stopped just short of actually entering it.

"Crafty, come on!" DogDay called.

The unicorn swallowed hard.

"I-I t-think I'll j-just take the stairs." She stammered.

"Our rooms are on the tenth floor." CatNap pointed out.

"It's fine." She giggled nervously. "I need to get in some cardio anyway."

Monophobia

When Bobby opened her eyes, she couldn't believe what she was seeing right now. She rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. She was surrounded walls of faded yellow. The must of old moist carpet filled her nose. The fluorescent lights above her buzzed endlessly.

She looked around looking for any sign of anyone. She tried one of the doorways only to find a long hallway of the same description.

"H-Hello?" She called.

She tentatively trudged forward in the hopes of finding help. Step after step. Room after room. Hallway after hallway, it was all the same. Tears welled up in her eyes. Her heart pounded as she struggled to control her breathing.

"ANYONE!" She cried out desperately. "Please! Help!"

The halls seemed to blend together in her desperate search. Her tears and the exhaustion didn't help in the slightest.

She didn't know how much time passed. But she just knew she was right back to where she started. Not knowing what else to do, the bear collapsed to the floor. She pulled her knees to her chest and buried her face into them before sobbing in despair.

"Bobby! Wake up!" Bubba cried as his girlfriend finally snapped awake.

Before he could say anything else to her, Bobby tackled him onto his and cried into his chest.

Trypanophobia

CatNap's face turned an even darker shade of purple as Picky's clung for dear life with one arm, nearly crushing his windpipe. She was shivering so hard, her other arm had to be held down by DogDay and Bobby as Bubba drew blood with a syringe.

Further down the line, Poe had to held by Simon and Allister or else they'd have a runner on their hands.

Astraphobia

While DogDay was having his dilemma with his nightlight, Hoppy wasn't doing much better. The storm raged on and Hoppy laid in her bed, clutching her sheets. Every time, just as she was about to nod off, a flash of lightning or a clap of thunder would jolt her awake, prompting her to hide under blanket.

"Stupid storm." She gulped.

Tachophobia

"THAT WAS AWESOME!" Simon cheered as he, Rabie, and Maggie got off the roller coaster.

"Baba! Touille!" Maggie called. "We're going to the next ride."

When she turned around to look at them, she her eyes widened with concern.

"Uh... guys?" She stammered.

"Yeah?" Rabie responded.

"Baba and Touille aren't looking so good."

"What?" Simon piped up before looking at the aforementioned friends.

Sure enough, the two weren't... in the best condition.

Baba was foaming at the mouth, her eyes were wide and blank, and she twitched every few seconds. Touille, meanwhile, was frozen in place like a statue, his face face stuck in a perpetual scream of terror.

Out of curiosity, Simon poked the rat, causing him to tip out of his seat and onto the ground, still completely frozen.

"...Maybe bringing two tachophobes onto the Turbo Brain Exploder wasn't the best idea." Simon gulped.

"You think?" Rabie snarked.

Phasmophobia

"Maggie, maybe you shouldn't be watching this movie." Poe said. "You know how you are with ghosts."

"Oh, please!" The shark scoffed. "I've already gotten over that."

The raven merely raised a suspicious eyebrow.

Later that night, Maggie was in bed, her eyes darting about her room, looing for anything that shouldn't be there. Needless to say, she wasn't gonna get any sleep tonight.

Lepidopterophobia

Rabie had just stumbled upon the ultimate source of gossip: CraftyCorn drawing something for her crush. She dove into a bush to get a closer look. She watched until Crafty was about to. She planned to snatch the picture while she wasn't looking. But before she could, a butterfly landed on her nose, giving her an up close and personal view of its face.

Rabie screamed at the top of her lungs before rocketing away, leaving a very confused unicorn behind.

Acrophobia

Allister would've really like to fall asleep as the plane was taking off. But that would be easier said than done when he was jolted awake by a sudden crushing pain in this wrist. He turned to his left and saw the source: Icky.

His hand was crushing is as the other nearly snapped the armrest. He was shuddering so much, Allister genuinely started to wonder if it was he was just feeling turbulence or not.

Katasaridaphobia

Simon whistled as he hammered a nail into a wall. From there, he hung a new portrait of himself, smiling cockily as ever. Grinning at his handiwork, she left to get a towel for a last minute polish. But when she came back, he froze when he saw that a cockroach had crawled onto the picture.

Nothing happened for several seconds, other than the dragon staring blankly at the roach.

...

...

...

He then suddenly punched the roach, smashing the portrait and inadvertently installing a crude new window. After a few seconds, what he had done started to sink in.

"EWWW!" He squealed as he rushed off to wash off the roach viscera. "EW! EW! EW! EWEWEWEWEWEW!

Arachnophobia

"SPIDERS! SPIDERS!" Allister screamed.

In his dream, he was being swarmed by spiders and he was desperate smashing his was out of it. In the real world, he was unconsciously and repeated smacking the snot out of his boyfriend Icky with his bed.

"OW! ALLISTER! OUCH! AL STOP! OW! IT'S ME! OW! YOU MORON!" He howled.
