Work Text:
Mel smiled, tucking in her six year old daughter, Javika. She could hardly believe she'd been a mother for six years now. But, at the same time, it felt like so much longer.
"Sleep well, my little mage."
"Mum?"
She turned, hearing the voice of Jarek, Javika's twin brother. "Yes, little hammer?"
"Will we ever get to meet our dads?"
Her heart stuttered. Nights like this, nights when the twins asked questions, were always the hardest. She sighed, sitting on the edge of Jarek's bed.
"I believe that you already have, in a way. At least, I believe they have met you."
Javika rolled onto her side and spoke up. "But why can't we see them?"
Her children were miracles. She was powerful enough to create them from nearly will alone, after just enough of Jayce and Viktor's DNA had seeped through their astral plane to whatever hell the Black Rose created. She missed them so much back then, right after they died. Still missed them, even all this time later. They were her partners, her best friends.
"Your fathers… they exist only in an astral plane now. It's… sort of a world between worlds. Between our world and the spirit's world."
Jarek frowned in thought. "So they're dead?"
"That's… complicated. Unfortunately, I believe they are dead to our world. But, like I said, they exist in an astral plane. So… their bodies may be gone, but their spirits live on. And you should be happy to know that they're together."
"Did they love each other?"
She smiled at Javika's question. "Very much so, yes. We all did. And you, hammer and mage, inherited the greatest parts of us all."
Both twins spoke together. "We did?"
She chuckled, always loving when they spoke simultaneously. "Your fathers and I all come from different backgrounds. And you inherited it all. From me, your Noxian strength. From Viktor, your Zaunite perserverence. And from Jayce, you got twice as much. Those beautiful Ixtali eyes from your Gran Ximi, and your Piltovan determination from her late husband. You are the best of us all."
Javika played with the hem of her blanket. "And what about our magic? Will we ever be like you?"
She hummed in thought. "The truth is, I don't know. Since you were created by magic, I'm not sure that you could ever wield it. But I hope you do. When I first awakened my powers, I was… cautious. It was a strange, new world to me. But as time went on, I came to value my gifts. And I want that for you both. But, what I can tell you… is that a good night's sleep will help you to awaken your powers, if they ever come. So, rest now."
The twins both settled into bed. "Goodnight, mum."
She smiled as she shut off their light. "Goodnight, Jay. Goodnight, Vik."
