The False Psychic

Summary:

Max has always had the medium ability, now it's time for the brothers to learn about it just like her parents did. Maybe this time a bit more accepting then her first time.

Work Text:

Max always knew that she could see spirits, she first realized she could when she saw her grandmother spirit, she was confused when her parents tried to tell her that she passed away. Of course that confused the young Spanish-American since she just witnessed her grandmother walking. Back then in the 80's there wasn't a word for that kind of ability, so she was just seen as a girl in mourning and chalked up as that in her parents eyes.

Today there is now a word for the ability, Medium. A person who abridges the gap between the human world and the spirit world. She uses this power when she hunts, making it so she can fight the spirits when most hunters can't see them when they're not visible in the spirit realm, which makes it easy for this hunt. Dean was confused as Max was staring at the furthest wall from where they both stood, the three were on a hunt for a ghost that was killing the patrons of this small ass town. But the ghost went invisible making it impossible for Sam and Dean to find it.

"Max?" Dean asked, concerned that Max was in a trance or in danger. She pointed at the wall, which was still concerning for the veteran hunter. "There." She mouthed to him like the ghost will hear them if she spoke up, "There?" Dean whispered, trying to gauge Max into seeing if the ghost was where she was pointing to. She nodded making Dean aim and fire at the wall with his shotgun filled with rock salt bullets. The ghost screamed in pain as it went visible before disapating into smoke.

"How the fuck?!" Dean exclaimed, shocked to see that she was right. Max shrugged nonshaluntly like it was nothing to worry about, "I could always see them." She noted.

"Everyone can see ghosts, not when they're invisible.” He reminded her like it was impossible that what she said was true. “I could.” Max repeated, Dean huffed this was frustrating but he couldn't deal with this at the moment as he grabbed Max's arm and started to drag her away “Let's go. We'll talk about this later-”

-Noon-ish?-

Max sat on the bed, she was awake before both of the boys were. She always was, one of the reasons were nightmares another reason was because the girl just didn't like sleeping in late even with their insomnia. Dean was pacing as he muttered, she couldn't hear anything because of how low he's muttering before he finally spoke up.

“How long have you known about this-” he waved his hand as he motioned to her body like it would finish his question, before actually finishing his sentence “ability?” He asked

“I figured out I could see ghosts when I was young and saw my grandma's ghost sitting on her rocking chair and no one else could see her.”

“So can you turn this off?” Max shook her head, “No not really. I've just learned to ignore stuff unless it's important, like for hunts.” She noted

“So your physic?” Sam asked

Max shook her head again, “No, normal-ish. I can't see the future or do anything with my mind. I just see ghost, I'm a-” she paused as she tried to find the word, it's still new to her and never was in her vocabulary until later in life “Medium.” She said with a snap of her fingers as she finally got the word she was looking for. She smiled “I'm a medium.”

“So what do they do?” Dean raised an eyebrow, “It's what those “phoney” physics do. See and hear spirits.” She shrugged

“Even when they were invisible?” Sam asked, trying to understand the extent of her “powers”.

She nodded “Yep.”

“Huh- at least it's useful.” Dean noted, with a shrug putting his hands behind his head as Sam nodded “Yeah-”

“I’m hungry.” Dean said as he smacks his thigh. “Let’s get some grub.” He pointed to the door, to clear the awkward tension, something he always does when he's uncomfortable with the silence. Max nodded “Food sounds good.” She said with a soft smile, “Besides I haven’t ate since before the hunt and chasing that ghost caused me to be starving right now.” She groans softly and Dean rolled his eyes. “Damn it woman, causing my card to run dry.”

“Says the man who scammed the company.” That got a laugh out of Sam and a glare from Dean, Sam was given the same glare from his older brother but the youngest smirked “What? It was good.”

Dean rolled his eyes before walking off having the other two follow behind him.
