Memory Eater, Guilt Breeder.

Summary:

Luz and Hunter have been feeling a bit odd as of lately. It’s been a year since Belos was defeated and a year since the Isles had been freed from his immortal reign. Though, besides that, something has been off.

Luz and Hunter faint, feeling tired and nauseous, the doctor they wake up to, tells them to stay home and rest. A few days before Christmas, the two are stuck home alone as Camilla and Vee went to work at the Veterinarian Clinic. The two work together to help clean and prepare for their return, against what they were told.

They fall asleep together on the couch, though when they wake up… something wrong.. very wrong.

(I wrote this like a blurb? Was that what I was meant to do? I just got here lol)

Notes:

Authors note: (Luz and Hunter are the main characters and the perspective will swap between them, the start of each chapter will say which perspective is in control. Also Luz goes by She/Her/They/Them in this because I said so, and will often be called by androgynous and masculine terms by their friends and girlfriend. Pronouns used to address Luz will alternate, I’ll try to make sure it isn’t confusing. Hunter goes by He/Him but likes to be feminine so he might be called things like a “bad girl”/“derby queen”, and Huntlow is a ship in this fic! (So is Gusttholomule but that wont matter much in this fic in particular, it’ll matter more in the others I write!)

The first two chapters are short buildups to the third chapter when the story really kicks in, which I am currently writing! Enjoy the first two taste testers of my writing ability in the meantime!

Chapter 1: It’s Just a Feeling.

Chapter Text

Chapter 1: It’s Just a Feeling.
(Luz’s perspective)

“Hey, are you okay mi amor?”

Amity asks Luz slightly playfully, who shakes out of the trance they were trapped in. They smile and nod.

“Yeah, yeah, of course! Sorry, just a little distracted.”

Luz replies with a soft laugh, Amity smiles sadly but doesn’t probe too much. The group of friends were having a little Christmas get-together before having to spend time with their respective families. Luz and Hunter seemed to be somewhat… lost the entire time, the group noticed quickly.

They didn’t really know how to help, Luz and Hunter had collectively been acting a little odd for the past month or two, but they themselves didn’t seem to notice.

From the twos perspective, they had been hallucinating and feeling unusually tired, but didn’t want to come forward to anyone as they didn’t want to be burdens. They had no clue that they both had the same issue.

It had been a year since they defeated Belos and freed the Isles from his reign. Repairs were still being made and the new government was still being formed, so the two didn’t want to treat anything of themselves as a problem.

The couple and their friends walk down the dark but cozy beach. The sand was soft and golden and the water splashed quietly at the shoreline. Luz smiles, they loved the smell of the warm salty water of the boiling sea. It made them feel a little bit better with the subtle dizziness she had had all afternoon, and the fright she kept giving herself, swearing she saw something or someone in the corner of her eye every so often.

Hunter stops in front of the group.

“Hey, can we uh, take a break? I just wanna look at the sea for a minute”

He asks, awkwardly smiling. Willow giggles.

“Of course Hunter, you don’t need to sound so nervous. I’d like to take some pictures anyway, it’s really beautiful tonight.”

The group stop, Gus and Hunter sit down on the sand and begin chatting away. Willow stands at the shoreline and takes out the polaroid she kept from the human realm, she really loves that camera. While Amity wanted to go and chat to Willow, she was too concerned about her partner, who seemed to be quiet and a little wobbly during the walk.

Luz stood and stared at the sea, while Amity took the chance to talk about her recent mechanic apprenticeship with her dad. They didn’t mind when Amity went on a ramble, she didn’t do it with anyone else. Though as much as they wanted to listen to their girlfriend, they were starting to feel rather nauseous and anxious.

“Human.”

Luz was snapped out of thought, a deep familiar voice startling her. As she came to however, there was no sign of where the voice came from. She squinted out to where she thought she heard it, but there was nothing but a flat open sea. She shook her head and hands, overwhelmed, Amity noticed.

“Luz? Are you okay?”

Amity’s voice is gentle as she puts her hand on Luz’s shoulder, who merely smiles in return, though she looks distressed. Amity scowls as there’s clearly something wrong. Luz’s head starts throbbing as the nausea becomes unbearable, there’s a sudden feeling of danger but from no real source, she tries to hide it but obviously it’s hard to hide such discomfort.

She suddenly topples over, though Amity, who had been holding her hand, grabs her and stops her from falling. She holds Luz in her arms, their head on her chest. The others dart their eyes over, all beginning to share a collective feeling of worry and quickly get up to rush over.

“Luz? Luz can you hear me? What’s wrong?”

“Luz? You okay?”

“It’s okay sweetie, don’t move, you’re okay-“

Amity comforts her while the others are trying to ask her what’s wrong, though Luz is a little too out of focus to understand anything, her vision becoming blurry.

Willow begins contacting Eda, as they aren’t too far from the Owl House. Though Hunter begins to behave strangely as well. His head spins and he becomes light-footed, but doesn’t tip over like Luz. He tries to hide the discomfort but Gus notices and brings attention to it, thus making the whole situation a lot more concerning.

“Hang on you two, we’ll get you to a doctor!”

Willow contacts Eda as both of the siblings are being comforted by Amity and Gus. Luz passes out before anyone arrives.

—————-

Luz wakes up in the infirmary, Hunter in the next bed, though he’s sitting upright and fiddling with a fidget toy. She rises from the bed slowly, confused, Hunter notices and turns to her.

“Hey”

“Hey”

The two greet each other.

“How are you feeling?”

Hunter asks softly, his eyes tired and half open. Luz smiles weakly in return.

“I’m fine, better than ever, why… are you here? Are you okay? What happened?”

Luz starts listing questions quickly, Hunter shrugs at the end of them, neither of them really know what happened.

“Not sure, you fainted and I…. Also fainted, a- after you fainted. The doctor says-“

“That there is no problems, strangely.”

On cue, interrupting Hunter, the doctor who had been testing them walked in. A taller witch with golden hair and warm brown skin, half his face covered by a hospital mask and the other half covered by rose tinted glasses. His eyes were impossible to see.

He stands in-between their beds, ruffling through some paper on a clipboard. He speaks in his bored, monotone voice again.

“There is no issue here with either of you, no health concerns or deficiencies. The best call I can make is say that you’re both fatigued, with the information gathered from your friends and loved ones, that is.”

Luz and Hunter stare at him as he speaks, looking to each other when he finishes. They had both been feeling oddly tired and out of it over the past month or so but never really took note. Especially since Hunter almost never felt NOT tired once being the Golden Guard, and Luz has a tendency to not sleep ever since the ‘getting trapped in the human realm with the group’ incident.

The doctor sighs as the friends show up in the door, peering in to check on the two siblings who had fainted the night before. Amity quickly walks over to Luz’s bed and hugs her, kissing her nose gently, Luz flusters in return. Hunter sticks his tongue out in a fake disgust but does enjoy watching his sister be happy. Willow and Gus arrive to his bed and greet him.

“Well, this is sweet, but I do need to run at least once more blood test on Luz who wasn’t able to consent to it while unconscious. After that I’ll send you back home and request that you don’t do anything active or leave your house for at least a week. I’ll also recommend drinking more water, specifically targeted at Mr. Noceda here.”

The doctor finishes and Hunter snickers, Willow nudges him in response.

The blood test gets done on Luz, which oddly doesn’t get shown to her, the doctor doesn’t really discuss it either. Strange. But he says there’s no real issue, like Hunter, other than a tiny vitamin D deficiency.

The siblings say goodbye to the group and get picked up and taken back the human realm, where Camilla, their mother, drives them back home.
