Chapter 1: We’re Friends.

Chapter Text

Ah, the weekend. The best time for any student to get to relax. That is, unless your name is Saiki Kusuo. Today he had plans with the plague of a man that is Toritsuka. Lately, the two had been together more often than Saiki was used to, as the boy got up out of bed. What a nuisance. I’m supposed to watch my show today. He got changed, going downstairs to see his mom.

“Ah, Kuu-chan! I made your breakfast. Don’t forget about your friend coming by too, okay?” I wasn’t going to. “Good! Now, me and your father are going out, but I made leftovers so you two can eat those for lunch!” His mother smiled, as Saiki began to eat his breakfast with an internal sigh. Of course I’m alone with him again because they’re going out. He tried to ignore his father coming in, with his parents being extra lovey dovey today. “Oh, Kusuo, before we go, make sure that you don’t stay out too late alright? Me and your mother are going to be out until tomorrow.” I hate when you two think about things like this infront of me. He complained, his parents faces turning red. “Kusuo, you know better than to look into our minds! Thats it, we’re out of here!” “Take care Kuu! I’ll call you when we’re at our hotel okay?” And with that, Saiki was alone to finish his breakfast.

Saiki was on the couch now, watching tv as he waited for Toritsuka to show. He must be on his way, but I should check. He knew that he could get sidetracked, and one time never even showed since he decided to ‘help’ two women. Using clairvoyance, his face shifted slightly being more annoyed to find out Toritsuka really was on his way. I suppose I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up. After all, there is no god. He tried to focus on the tv after, hoping that something may stop Toritsuka from arriving. Unfortunately, nothing ever goes right for him when he wants it to.

Hey, Saiki, can you hear me? Toritsuka tested, smiling as he continued to walk.

What do you want Toritsuka?

I wanted to ask what you were up to. Are you doing homework or watching something?

Saiki, don’t ignore me. I’m trying to talk to you.

Then talk to me when you actually get here. Toritsuka huffed, as he continued to walk. That psychic could be so annoying, yet he never felt like he could turn away a chance at being around him. He knew if Saiki actually cared then he’d do something to stop him anyways. And what if I do? Toritsuka paused, as he groaned. Saiki Kusuo really could be so dramatic when shown the truth about himself. I am not. Toritsuka laughed with that, as he arrived at Saikis house opening the gate to get in.

“Saikiii! You can put on your ring if you want, I’m here now!” He somewhat hoped he would, as he went inside taking off his shoes looking to the psychic on the couch. “Were you seriously just watching the news this entire time..?”

Of course not. Teruhashi showed up on a show I was watching, so I changed the channel.

“Ah. Of course.” And with that, he sat next to his friend. We are not friends.

“Keep telling yourself that.” Toritsuka smirked, as he looked to him. “How about we watch a movie? I heard that they’re airing that movie that came out two weeks ago, what was it called again?” Toritsuka tried to think of it, not noticing Saiki changing to the channel that would play it later on.

“Well, whatever. Any movie would be good. Maybe even one with-”

We are not watching any movie with a woman as the main character. I know where your brain goes when we do so.

“Ugh, just put on your ring then!”

Saiki mentally rolled his eyes.

I can still feel them, you pervert.

He retorted, as he tried to relax on the couch. “Fine. Let's watch some stupid lame movie.” Toritsuka complained, looking at Saiki. “You pick.” He had a few in mind, mostly since he thought Saiki would actually like them listing them off in his head hoping the psychic may pick one. Much to his shock, he had.

I’ve seen two of the ones that you wanted to watch, actually.

“Wait, really?” Toritsuka was shocked, as he stretched out his arms to put on the couch. “I know you like watching shows and movies, but I didn’t know you had watched those. They sounded niche.”

That's because they are.

Toritsuka smiled, as Saiki shifted over slightly to be closer to him.

‘The Pearl’s Lament’ sounds interesting enough due to the title.

“Yeah! It said that it's about a woman wanting to become a mermaid again, so I figured you may like it since it's supposed to be half action half suspense the entire time.” He mostly picked it since it had what both of them liked, given the main characters were-

Toritsuka.

“Oh, right. I forgot you can read my mind. Are you sure you don’t wanna wear your ring?” He asked, surprised the psychic didn’t even have it on.

I’ll only put it on if your thoughts annoy me too much.

Toritsuka felt that worked, as the movie began.

For Toritsuka, this movie was one of the most boring he had ever seen in his life. It was full of cheap thrills, the main character was the guy and not the girl like he had thought, and to make it even worse the costume design for the villain was terrible.

Seriously, the movie truly belonged at the 100 yen store. Yet, as he looked down to see Saiki, his friend appeared to be completely drawn in much to his own shock.

“Man, we have really got to get you to watch more movies.”

There’s no point unless we go the day it releases. The next day I always hear about it and how it ends, so it ruins the entire film.

“Ohh, is that why I never see you there?” It felt obvious now thinking about it, but Toritsuka never did consider how stuff like that could happen so frequently. His thoughts were cut off hearing a yawn from Saiki, as he sighed. “So this is boring even for you? Why didn’t you say anything?”

It is not boring. I’m still human, I can yawn.

“Yeah, most people yawn when they're bored or tired. It's obvious you don’t like the movie either.” Toritsuka felt Saiki could be so dramatic sometimes, as he moved his arm to try and take the remote from Saiki, landing his arm over him.

Get off me.

Saiki turned to him, clearly irritated, with Toritsuka continuing to try and get the remote. “Come on, lets just change it to a gameshow or something! Why are you being so difficult?!” Toritsuka complained, with Saiki holding out his arm to keep him away from it.

Truth be told, if he really wanted Toritsuka off him he could launch him off, but he didn’t want to hurt his friend, so he was stuck.

Toritsuka, I said get off me.

He tried to use as angry of a tone as possible, as his eyes widened when Toritsuka fully fell on him. Both of the boys tensed,

“Woah- sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.”

Saiki looked to the medium, unable to move with his face so close.

“Saiki? You okay?” Toritsuka had never seen him make that face before. It reminded him of when a girl he was after got shy, yet not quite that. He tried to think on what it could be quickly realizing it. “Oh! I’m too close, huh?” He moved to get off the psychic, as he watched Saiki sit up after a moment. “You made such a weird face, and.. hey, where are you going?”

To the bathroom.

Saiki quickly went to do so, leaving the remote for Toritsuka. Once in there, he locked the door looking at himself more embarrassed than ever seeing his pink face.

What am I even red for? All he did was fall on top of me. Sure, he was close, but that shouldn’t be an issue. Nendo has gotten in my face plenty of times without asking.

He tried to rationalize it, as he used his cyrokinesis to calm his face.

Toritsuka wasn’t much help, as when he looked into the boys mind all he seemed to be thinking about was finding something different to watch.

How is he just ignoring everything that just happened?!

Little did he know, Toritsuka was just trying to distract himself. It was hard to, given how Saiki looked. It reminded him too much of what he’d read in magazines before they got to the good part, yet he knew Saiki would never want to do something like that. He was equally as confused, with the psychic putting a hand to his own face.

Of course that idiot isn’t actually ignoring it. I sound like Chiyo. With that, the psychic- Wait, why did I sound like a girl who feels like what happened shouldn’t be ignored?

Saiki never thought like this, not with anyone. It was unnatural to him, to even think about Toritsuka in any other way than a friend would. Sure, he liked his face and the closeness was startling, but that could mean anything. Teruhashi was beautiful no doubt and he didn’t feel like this with her, so why was he feeling like this with the medium?

Either I’m getting sick or something else is going on. I can’t stay in here forever, he's already getting worried that he did something wrong.

Saiki put a hand on his head, looking to his face to make sure his blush was gone as he washed his hands leaving the bathroom shortly after.

“Hey, you alright?” I’m fine. “If you say so. I changed it to a gameshow I’ve watched with you before since its on now.” He smiled, as the psychic sat further away from him than he usually would. Ah, I fucked up, didn’t I? Or is he just upset I changed the movie to something else? Toritsuka decided to get closer to Saiki, watching to see if he moved away, smiling when he didn’t. I must just be worried for no reason.

Saiki ignored him the best he could, not wanting to seem irritated as he knew it was a small thing that just happened. It wasn’t fair to kick the medium out over it despite him wanting to just so he could think, as he tried to focus on the show. He heard Toritsuka move closer to him again, as he activated his cyrokinesis feeling his face start to get red.

“So, what should we do after this?”

You could go home.

“Wheres the fun in that?” He smiled, as he moved to try and nudge Saiki's arm recoiling back soon after. “Woah! Man, why are you so cold?” What do you mean? “Saiki I think you know exactly what I mean. Where does your mom keep your blankets? You need one.” I do not. Don’t treat me like a child. “If you wanna act like that, then I’ll just give you my jacket.”

Saiki paused hearing that. He wasn’t against it, but he didn’t get why the thought of it made his heart beat faster. I said I am fine. I can just use pyrokinesis. “You don’t have to always use your powers. Some stuff can be solved normally.” Toritsuka moved to take off his jacket, putting it over Saiki. “There. Just keep it on until you warm up a bit, okay?” He sat by Saiki after, with the boy practically frozen with the jacket on him. He moved to put it on after a moment, glad he could still keep his redness away though admittedly was getting cold while doing this.

Toritsuka's jacket is bigger than I thought it’d be. Why is my heart not calming sown though? Am I having a heart attack? Saiki couldn’t figure it out. Sure, Toritsuka could be called sweet for this, but don’t friends take care of each other? He did change the movie to something he knew Saiki likes, and hes staying close to him. His heart began to beat faster when Toritsuka looked at him, as Saiki shut his eyes trying to think on what to do. He does look cute when hes focusing. He must be trying to heat himself up without burning my jacket.

Wait, he thinks I’m cute? Saiki's eyes opened with that, as he tried to get himself to relax to calm down. The psychic hadn’t even noticed that Toritsuka had turned down the show, with the medium moving to put his arm over him.

“Whats got you so focused, huh?” He teased, looking at Saiki. “You trying to figure out how to burn me and my jacket at the same time?”

Of course not. I’m allowed to think too, you know.

Toritsuka assumed Saiki may need a moment, as he nodded. “Alright. I’ll try to keep my mind clear for you then, okay?” Saiki mentally sighed hearing that, as he closed his eyes again.

It just doesn’t make sense. The way I’m acting isn’t normal for me, and its so obvious even Toritsuka knows that. At least his brain does seem quiet, but I’m sure it’ll only be like this until a woman shows up on the screen. Saiki just couldn’t figure it out in his head. Why was he feeling so hot due to a few simple gestures and closeness? He couldn’t even think of a time that he felt like this before.

I need Toritsuka gone so I can figure this out, but I don’t want to just kick him out. He was technically invited over thanks to my mom. What can I do to get him to leave, though?

He was cut off from his thoughts feeling a hand on his shoulder. “Saiki, are you getting hungry at all?”

No. If you’re hungry, my mom made us food and put it in the fridge.

“Oh, good! Mind if I help myself to it then?”

I’ll help you with it. I don’t trust you to not make a mess.

“Rude.” Toritsuka stood up, putting a hand out to Saiki. “So, will you tell me what you were thinking about now?” He wasn’t surprised when he didn’t get a response, Saiki taking the hand but letting go rather quickly after.

What's the quickest way to get him out of here.. I can’t teleport, since he’ll just wait for me or assume it's a bug, and I can’t lie and say I have another place to be since he’ll know I’m lying.

The psychic opened the fridge, getting the two of their meals out from it.

I suppose after this I could pretend to fall asleep. Maybe thats the easiest way for him to leave? As long as he leaves once he realizes it, anyway.

“Saiki, you’re usually not this quiet with me. Something wrong?”

Shoot. I let my guard down. I need to think of an excuse.

I just feel tired.

Saiki felt that was the best excuse for the situation, heating up their food in the microwave as he sat down to wait with Toritsuka. “Oh! Well, you should’ve told me sooner. You had me worried.” He knew Toritsuka was right, given the relief the medium had listening in on his thoughts now.

Saiki usually isn’t tired, so maybe something happened yesterday? Or did he have a nightmare? Actually, can psychics even have nightmares? Well, it can also explain why he was acting so weird earlier, maybe he was trying to fall asleep.

Saiki smiled slightly, feeling his plan was going to work as he moved to get up hearing the beep from the microwave.

“I got it!” He looked to him, watching Toritsuka grab their food with it clearly being too hot given how quickly the boys hands moved away from their containers. “Wait right there, okay Saiki?” Saiki watched him, finding it a little funny how Toritsuka was lightly burning himself looking to the food that made it to the table after about two minutes of this. “There! Which do you want to eat?” They are the exact same dish Toritsuka. “Then I’ll take this one.” The medium sat next to Saiki, pulling the closest one over with his chopsticks not wanting to hurt himself even more than he already had.

While the two ate, Toritsuka rambled about a girl he was chasing after and had gotten rejected by after her friends told her about how he had acted with them. For once, rather than only being glad Toritsuka was put in his place, he was glad that he had been rejected. Saiki didn’t have a reason for why, but it felt good to know that he was still single.

“Ahh, your moms such a good cook! I should come over for food more often.”

If you do, she’ll start making you help.

“I wouldn’t mind that. Sometimes the monks make me help, and those recipes were easy to memorize since they had to be simple.” Toritsuka smiled, having finished his food pretty quick. “So! Do you wanna keep watching your show then?”

Actually, I have a different one I want to watch.

He only wanted to given he had seen it so many times, feeling it’d be perfect to help him be able to pretend to sleep if they watched a boring episode. He got up, taking his and Toritsuka's dishes to put into the sink going back to him after.

Are you gonna sit there and just watch me?

“Course not. I was being polite, you should try it sometime.”

As if a pervert like you is ever actually polite.

Saiki went to sit with that, Toritsuka sitting next to him with a smile. Saiki put on the show, going to the exact episode he wanted before putting the remote to the side. “So, what's the show about?”

If you watch it you’ll see.

“You picked the fifth episode, how am I supposed to know what's going on?” Saiki felt caught, despite Toritsuka not even knowing about his plan with the psychic trying to think of what to do now, and all he could think to do was lie.

...It's about a man looking for his wife who went missing. Nothing happened outside of his investigations in the first four episodes.

“Ohh, I see. Well, if you like it, then I’ll watch it!”

Saiki felt his plan was going perfectly. Once the episode began, he relaxed into the couch, trying to pretend to seem sleepy. It was harder than he thought, with Toritsuka seeming interested somewhat in the episode yet the psychic hadn’t noticed that the medium next to him kept looking at him.

Saiki can be so cute. Ah, I shouldn’t be thinking about this in front of him! Shoo thoughts, shoo!

That confused Saiki. To know that Toritsuka thinks of him more and compliments him in his mind when he's not listening was too much. He really did want to just be alone to process it all.

After the episode ended, Toritsuka turned to him with a grin. “Hey, that was pretty good!” He assumed at first that Saiki was just relaxing, as he got closer to him. “Saiki? You awake?”

I know he said he was tired, but I didn’t think he meant that tired. Okay, think. What would the men do in those porn magazines when the person they were fucking fell asleep? Saiki mentally rolled his eyes hearing that. Oh! They’d clean them up and put them to bed. We didn’t do anything, so all I need to do is put him in his bed so he's comfortable. Alright Saiki, please don’t weigh a ton.

Toritsuka moved to be gentle, putting his hand behind Saiki and one under his legs picking him up bridal style holding him close. I wonder if he’d be upset if I were to stay while he slept? He’d find it weird if I stayed close I bet. I’d better leave him a note. Toritsuka smiled, going to walk up the stairs with the psychic lost in his own mind. He couldn’t believe that Toritsuka, despite his flawed thinking, had figured out what he should do and was doing it in a polite way. This didn’t sound like him at all and if anything he would’ve expected him to draw on his face like he had before.

Saiki, truly, felt more lost than he had before. He hadn’t felt anything like he was now and if anything it made him feel weak. He didn’t like any of this, yet if he was to be honest with himself, a growing piece inside had wanted to ask Toritsuka to stay. He felt himself be put onto his bed and tucked in, feeling this would be easier to handle later on once he found out what was wrong with himself.

What can I write on.. oh! Wait, I’ll just take his phone to put on the charger and I’ll text him so he can sleep! Before that though, I’ve gotta take a picture and I’ll send it with the message.

I don’t understand you. Saiki thought quietly, though didn’t move much letting Toritsuka take his phone to charge and hearing the click from the mediums phone let him know he got all he wanted.

I’ll see you later Saiki, I hope you’re sleeping well.. honestly, I bet you’re just dreaming about coffee jelly. Toritsuka laughed in his mind, as he moved to go. I’ll come back later when I know you're awake.

And with that, Saiki waited for Toritsuka to be away enough to open his eyes. He felt that what he was feeling was a want to be around him, though he tried to think on what could have changed to cause this.

All he did was eat with me and be around me. He was close earlier, but that's no cause for alarm. He also complimented me, and to be honest I never thought anyone would call me cute outside of when I was little. Saiki could feel his face burning up, but he didn’t use his cyrokinesis feeling this could help him with figuring it out. Just thinking about what he did for me a moment ago is making my face red. And with that, it clicked, and the psychic's face turned to both relief and disgust at the same time.

Oh God.
