Work Text:

She knew that look in Lights eye when Misa finally left his house for the night. He approached her the same. arms out stretched and cradling her to his chest almost reassuringly. But it felt different, his hands that lingered against her too long felt heavy, suffocating. When she met his amber eyes that she loved oh so much, they were… almost unfamiliar. Sharper, shadowed in the angle she looked up at him.

The light in his room haloed his head, he looked divine. Quite literally.

But his eyes. That gaze, dark and brooding and almost reminiscent of blood in its hue settled deep in her gut. Eating away at her from the inside. She didn’t want him to look at her like that. The way he looked at that Misa girl. It made her nauseous.
“Don’t look at me like that.” Her voice sounded strange to her ears; like she hadn’t even meant to say it aloud. Her tone was too meek, too shaky.

He blinked down at her, the sharp darkness subsiding behind his eyelids as the same softness that she was familiar with returned. His expression had shifted in the blink of an eye. Almost as if a switch was flipped in his head. It makes her nausea stronger and she felt the irresistible urge to avert her gaze.
Lights brows furrowed. His hand coming up to tilt her chin up, forcing her to meet his eyes.

“Look at you like what?” he asks slowly. Almost knowing. but Light always sounded that way.

So self assured. As if he wrote the rules to the world. As if the universe revolved around him, built by his words and his will.

As if he was God.

Shaking the thoughts from her mind she remained silent for a moment too long. A pregnant quiet lingered between them, Light's expression remaining patient and expecting and Shizuku's defensive. She felt like a rabbit caught in the wolf’s maw.
Unfortunately, with Lights lingering warmth on her waist and the softness of his gaze, her heart faltered and she picked what she always had. And was sure she always would; relaxing back into his grasp and letting her concerns melt away.

“That.. that look. The way you look at her…Misa.” The blondes name came out in a whispered hush, as if her name was blasphemy to speak aloud, earning a lopsided smirk from Light whose expression morphed into one synonymous with pity.

“What makes you think I'd look at her the way i look at you?” he questioned further, tone soft and gentle. as if he was soothing a frightened animal. It made her feel small. But this softness from someone like Light was offered few and far between and Shizuku wasn’t about to bite the hand that feeds her.

She felt his hand brush her cheek. thumb running beneath her eye as he cradled her face. With a sigh, she leaned into the contact. Eyes fluttering shut as she tried to ground herself. His fingers carded through her burgundy hair, his fingers twirling the ends of her longest strands. Shizuku willed her body to relax further into him. Slowly, she rested her head against his chest.

It wasn’t the same as their earlier embrace. something charged carried through them. Hearts beating out of sync for what seemed like a moment, but a moment too long. She felt.. off. And she was positive that Misa girl was nothing but bad news.
She felt him smile as he rested his lips against the crown of her head, placing a kiss to her hairline. a oddly domestic gesture she thought.

“I don’t like her..” she mumbled against the fabric of his shirt. Voice muffled but loud enough for him to pull back slightly to catch a glimpse at her expression.

“I don’t know why you’re jealous, angel. I’d never look at her the same way i do you.” Light said it as if it was obvious. Almost amused by her words. His hand moved to cradle the back of her head, stroking her hair lovingly as he rested his chin on her once more.
“I’m not jealous” Shizuku replied. Tone brash as her brows furrowed into a childish scowl, her nose wrinkling.

It only made Lights lips curl upwards. And with a tap to her nose he finally pulled away, moving to his desk.

“You’re a terrible liar, Shi.”
