Chapter 1
Bzzz Bzzz
Remus picked up the phone. He had just gotten drafted to the Washington Wolves, one of the best teams in the NHL. He was at a loss for words. Years of competition against other young stars, years of training, years of hard work, years of clawing his way to the top -- and he had made it. He was in the NHL. He was an official team member of the Washington Wolves. It wasn't the Montreal Metros - but it was damn close.
"Hello? Earth to Remus? Can you hear me?"
"Sorry mom -- yes I can hear you, I'm just..."
"Stunned? Well you should be, you're a NHL player now! My son is an NHL player!"
Remus chuckled, eyes tearing up.
"Yes I know! It's insane... I always thought I never had a chance."
"And I always thought you were insane for that and I guess I was right! Sweetheart you can't even understand how insanely proud I am of you right now! You worked so hard for this, I just wish I could be there to celebrate with you."
"I know mom, I wish you could be here too. But... can I admit something? I'm a little scared. The Wolves have incredible players. What if I'm not up to par? What if I make us lose one of our games? I just-"
"Remus. We both know that won't happen. You deserve to be there. They recruited you for a reason, you're amazing at what you do. Don't start overthinking and jumping to hypothetical possibilities when you haven't even met your team yet!"
"I know... I know mom. I won't."
"Ok, well, I'll let you go have your own celebrations now, bub -- I love you."
"Love you too mom. Bye."
He hung up.
Ok. Time to be a Washington Wolf. But a smoke first would be good.
Sirius had just been drafted to the Pittsburgh Pitbulls, something that he had been dreaming of since his mother made him start doing hockey ate the age of five. It was a dream come true. And not just that, he had also been drafted alongside his best friend James Potter. He was a Pitbull and he already had a friend on the team -- it was almost as if life couldn't get any better.
Bzz Bzz
Well, it could have been better if he was drafted to the Montreal Metros -- the team his mother had wanted him to get into.
"Hey."
"Sirius. Are you aware that Crouch Jr. was drafted to the Montreal Metros?"
"Yes, I'm aware, but the Pitbulls are still high up in the leagues! They're--"
"I'm having none of it. The Montreal Metros are the best of the best. We are the Blacks, we are the best of the best. Are you a Black?"
"Yes Mom, just listen please--"
"I will have none of it. Let's just hope you get transferred to the Metros in their next selection. You should have trained more, ate less carbs-"
"I was training like ten hours everyday! And the only carbs I had were carbs from bread! Whole-wheat bread!"
"Stop it. You shouldn't have been having carbs at all. You should have done better."
"Ok, fine--fine, yes, I know mom. I should have trained harder. I have to go talk to the press now and celebrate. Bye."
He hung up. Of course his mother was able to ruin a day that was supposed to be absolutely surreal. He guessed it still was. He was in the fucking NHL as an official hockey player for gods sake. That had to count for something.
Oh my god, I'm an NHL hockey player. Yeah I definitely need a smoke.
Remus heard footsteps come into the alleyway. He looked up. It was that Sirius Black guy who got drafted to the Pitbulls, he had seen him in junior games, but never got a good look of him due to his helmet always blocking his face. Damn. He was fine as shit. How the hell did he have porcelain fucking skin? But Remus didn't feel like talking right then. But apparently the universe had other plans as Black catched his eye, and unfortunately started talking to him."
"Oh! Sorry, I was just coming to have a smoke. Hey- wait, you're Remus Lupin right? You were drafted to the Wolves?"
"Mhm."
"Cool." He stuck out his hand for Remus to shake, Remus took it.
"I'm Sirius Black. I was drafted to the Pitbulls-"
"Yeah, I know."
"Well- you know I guess we'll be seeing each other often. The Wolves and the Pitbulls play against each other a lot."
"Mmm."
Remus stubbed out his cigarette. He couldn't deal with small talk right now, not when he was thinking about his future with the Wolves. And everything that could go wrong. And also especially not when he could barely keep his dick down imagining that porcelain fucking skin turning into sweat and heat while he took all of Remus, moaning out his-. Fuck. Yeah he should definitely leave this situation.
He started walking away.
"Oh! You have to go- well, it was nice meeting you!"
"Yep. Bye"
Didn't expect Lupin to be such a fucking asshole. He seemed like he'd be nice enough but I guess fucking not! And that's him after he's just been drafted to be a NHL fucking player. Imagine him on the regular. Sirius thought to himself as he stubbed out his cigarette and went to find James.
Sirius went back inside to the after party.
"Mate there you are where the hell did you go?!"
There was James.
"Sorry, just went for a smoke."
"Oh god Sirius. Your lungs are going to be as black as soot by the time you're 30. You know smoking and being an NHL player shouldn't go hand in hand right? Damn. I just said it out loud and it feels fucking crazy. We're fucking NHL players!"
"Seems like you've had a bit to drink haven't you?"
"Mhmm and you need to catch up to me! This is going to be the best night of our lives. Oh my god you haven't met the rest of the team yet! Let's go find 'em."
James dragged Sirius by his arm to meet the rest of their team.
Remus had found out his team weren't the most friendly, but they were still somewhat welcoming to him. Somewhat. Anyways, it didn't matter. They were good fucking players, and that's what mattered. For them, their sportsmanship didn't matter anywhere outside of the rink, and Remus was happy with that. He had always been somewhat reserved.
The captain of the Wolves, Evan Rosier, was quite closed off like Remus, but still open enough to give some tips to Remus concerning how the team worked with each other on the rink. Their playing style aligned with Remus' playing style, which was good. Maybe he'd be able to last with the Wolves for a while after all.
When he practised with the team the next day, he figured out that his initial thoughts when meeting the team had been correct. They were still very strong on the ice even though they didn't talk much outside of it, and he was able to keep up with all their passes. Their coach, Marlene McKinnon, the first female coach in the history of the NHL, warmly welcomed Remus to the rink. She was younger than most coaches, even younger than some of the players on the team, but still insanely good.
He took off his kit after practice, happy that none of his team members were insistent on having a loud conversation. He would fit in just fine.
For some reason though, Sirius Black kept on popping into his mind during practice. Probably due to the fact that Remus had wanted to snatch that cigarette out of Sirius' teeth when he saw him and pin him against the wall.
Anyways...
The Pitbulls were loud and their captain, Frank Longbottom, was happy to introduce James and Sirius to the rest of the team. They ruffled the rookies hair and Sirius knew he would fit in just fine.
Practice the next day went well too. He and James were an unstoppable duo, and Sirius wasn't the only one to spot that as Frank made him and James centers for the team.
For some reason though, Remus Lupin kept on popping into his mind during practice. He wasn't sure as to why, maybe he was just hoping to make a friend from another team, and was still dissapointed when it went badly. But that usually didn't happen.
Bzz
It was a text from Sirius' girlfriend Dorcas.
"We still on for date night tonight?"
"You bet! Love you, see you later"
"Love you too!"
Well, figuring out why he was thinking about Remus could wait for another day.
