Work Text:
When Shinichi went to that birthday party with his parents (unwillingly), he knew that he would be introduced to a lot of people. He'd meet a lot of people cooing at him he hadn't met in decades, but who all expected him to remember meeting them.
He didn't expect to be introduced to Kuroba Toichi, though. How could he meet a dead man alive?
"Hm. I could have sworn you were dead."
For a man accused of being dead, Kuroba Toichi didn't react at all, "Excuse me?"
"You are supposed to be dead. Died March 14th, 2016 by ways of immolation, after an unfortunate accident during a show." Shinichi had been under the assumption that Kuroba Toichi had been killed – his death a result of sabotage. Seeing him alive and well, no burns in sight, was confusing his brain.
That was an oddly specific description of Toichi's death. Toichi was perturbed by the idea. "I can assure you that I'm quite alive." Toichi might be one of the best magicians on Earth, some would say the best, but even Toichi couldn't do something as realive himself. Once people are dead, they generally stay dead.
"I can see that for myself. I do wonder, however, who I'm confusing you with."
