Work Text:

Yejun's a professional baker, with lots of orders to fulfill. Other than a professional baker, he’s also been dubbed the sweet neighbor of the apartment block due to his tendency to bake various sweet treats on special occasions for every tenant. Despite his popularity in his apartment block, he was always the lone tenant on his floor and constantly was wishing that he could have a new neighbor, one that he could be friends with. And also be his treat taste taster of course.

One late morning in spring, he woke up, waking out of his bedroom with a yawn. He stretched his stiff joints while making his way to the kitchen to make coffee. His ears perked with curiosity when he heard noises outside his apartment. At first, he decided that it was probably just the management that had sent someone to do some checks on the apartment building. However, the loud noises that faintly sounded like bantering of friends caught his attention. So, he decided to see what was going on.

When the door opened, he stood rooted. Eyes glued to a pair of friends, specifically the shorter of the two. The shorter male had pink hair with pale purple highlights, magenta eyes that drew him in. He fell into a slight daze when he realised the same shorter male, probably younger than him too, was calling out to him.

He lightly shook his head to get himself out of the trance and gave the other a soft smile, bowing his head slightly to greet the other male slightly before closing the door to carry on about his day.

The next few days have been quite amusing for Yejun. Apparently, the new neighbour was named Bonggu, although he somewhat also overheard his friends call him Bamby. First, the pink haired male offered him macarons (Yejun could tell that it was store bought) and introduced himself before asking if he could have some eggs for a recipe that he's modifying. This happened twice a week for the first two months. Flour, eggs, sugar for various reasons — baking, cooking, groceries not done, recipe modification — but yet, each time, Bonggu smiled sheepishly and offered the older male store bought goodies.

Then, the visits became more frequent. Sometimes, the younger male would bring various fruits on the courtesy of his parents and Yejun used them to make pies and other treats for the shorter male. Now, Bonggu just visits for the sake of making conversations with Yejun, their conversations filling the once empty hallway with warmth(Should he ask him inside? He’s not sure, once he decides the pink haired boy is already behind his own door) As time passes, Yejun slowly finds himself looking forward to all these "surprise ingredient request visits" that the younger male gives him.

Time passes and Yejun worries more about their hallway conversations outside of their apartment doors. It’s not like they were bothering anyone else on the level. They were the only two tenants! Yet the worry didn’t end. That night, he planned what kind of cake to bake for the other just to invite him in for coffee. Immediately, he decided to clean his apartment and made sure it looked lived in and not messy to give the impression of him being a messy person. It was two in the morning when he was done cleaning up and planning. He felt a small sense of pride as he overlooked his sparkling clean apartment and went off to sleep after washing up.

That morning, Yejun got up early and did his usual morning routine before settling down to bake a honey peach cake for Bonggu. It was deep in the afternoon when he plated it nicely, staring at it a little before making a late lunch for himself. Soon after his lunch, the blue haired male was already waiting near the door for Bonggu to ring his door bell, excuses running through his mind as he hovered by the door. He started counting down in his head the moment he heard the sound of the bell, wanting to wait before opening it. He was waiting by the door but he didn’t want Bonggu to know that. He waited one minute before opening the door, and sure enough, Bonggu greeted him cheerfully and presented the other with financiers that he proclaimed to have baked.

After a few minutes of chatting, Yejun remembered and awkwardly asked if he would like to come into his apartment for coffee. Bonggu's magenta-colored eyes widened and he blushed slightly, nodding. When he went into the house and saw honey peach cake on the dining table, he felt confused. Yejun then explained that it was for him and that he should make himself comfortable in the older's house. That was the very first time that they spent hours and hours chatting while sitting next to each other, enjoying the various treats.

Their feelings for each other blossomed as it became a routine. Most of the time, Bonggu would go over to Yejun's house and watch the other male bake various sweet treats to be delivered for his business. On days where there wasn't much to do, Yejun would go to the younger male's place to make dinner and honey peach cake for him. They both realised, this could not carry on like this. They both had the same idea popping into their heads. What if they could bake desserts as a confession and thus, that was what they did.

Yejun made strawberry flavoured cream macaron sandwiches while Bonggu made blueberry flavoured cream puffs — The pink haired male really practiced to perfect everything — and on Valentine's Day, they both presented the treats and asked each other out surprising each other with the same idea, like it was meant to be.

They blinked and laughed. That day, their feelings were made known to each other and they knew that in the future, they would both enjoy even more treats and desserts with each other.

"Hyung, I have something to confess."
"That your sweets in the past were store bought?"

".... You could tell?!"

"I could tell when I tasted them and some of it really looked.. machine made."

"You should have told me!"

"Then would you have kept coming to borrow eggs, flour, sugar and other ingredients from me?"

"Still~ I'm embarrassed.."

"It's okay, we can now experience more things with each other now. That's more important."

"You're right. Love you, Yejunnie Hyung~"

"I love you too, my love."

“....What did you do with all those ingredients anyways?”

“Hyunggggggg!”
