Vickie feels weird. She has never felt this way towards anyone , not towards any of her past boyfriends or boy crushes. Growing up in Hawkins , a mostly close minded town she knew the norm. You get married to a man and have kids and serve your husband. But the way she is feeling right now isn’t the norm at all. And it’s all because of one girl Robin Buckley.
Vickie has known Robin since their freshmen year of high school because of band. She never really talked to Robin outside of band , the most they would talk was if one of them was asking a question about the music or what time they had rehearsal but that was about it. That was until the big earthquake hit Hawkins during the spring and she had went to volunteer and to her surprise Robin was also there helping. Vickie still remembers how shy Robin was when she was talking to her that day.
Since that day in the spring the two of them had became best friends. They would go to the movies , hang out at the park or just chill in each other’s room like normal friends right? During that time period Vickie started feeling something. Something unusual , she didn’t know what it was but it kinda felt good but at the same time she felt guilty. ‘No no no I could never be that not that I have anything against people who like the same gender but me? No no I can’t’ Vickie says to herself in her head. It’s 4am and she has not gotten a blink of sleep.
Earlier that day her and Robin had hung out. Nothing unusual just how they normally hung out. Robin had came over to Vickie’s house because she wanted to show her a new artist she had recently discovered. “Ohhhh you’re going to love her Vick I swear!!” Robin says. “Hmmm I’ll be the judge of that” Vickie says while smiling. Robin presses play on the speaker and turns the volume up
“This song is called Hello by Clairo , her voice is amazinggg” Robin says singing the lyrics looking directly into Vickie’s eyes while getting closer to her face and reaching for her hands.
“Are you into me , like I’m into you?”
“Do you wanna do the things I wanna do with you?”
Vickie gulps. Her heart is pounding trying to enjoy the music the singer really does have a good voice but she feels strange. She wants Robin…? Robin lets go to her hands to turn the volume up some more. Vickie tries to shrug it off acting like she didn’t just realize she has a crush on her best friend who is a woman , a really beautiful pretty woman.
The song ends and Robin turns around Vickie. “Hey Vick are you okay? You seem zoned out” Robin says. “N-NO No Yeah I’m f-fine the song was really good Rob” Vickie says awkwardly smiling. “Oh hehe I’m glad you liked it the singers name is Clairo she’s truly one of a kind she’s actually about to come out with a new album soon called immun…” Robin then starts rambling about this singer , Vickie isnt even paying attention to what she is saying. She’s just admiring Robin.
The way her lips move and the way she puts her long fingers on her chin when she’s forming a thought and the way her beautiful eyes sparkle when she’s talking about one of her interests. Fuck Vickie was so hopelessly in love with her best friend , she couldn’t stop staring at her lips she just wanted to risk it all and kiss her , just once.
“UHH HELLO VICKIEEE??” Robin says. “OH IM SORRY” Vickie says back shaking her head. “Are you SURE your okay you keep zoning out and staring at my face is there something on me am I that chopped vick?” Robin says burying her face into her hands. “WHAT NO your the farthest thing from chopped” Vickie says lifting Robins face up from her hands. “Haha thank you Vick I could say the same thing about you…” Robin says.
Their faces are now ridiculously close together , they can hear each other’s breathing and they are making eye contact. Robin eyes start looking down towards Vickie’s lips. Vickie notices ‘holy shit is this actually about to happen’ Vickie thinks to herself. Robin slowly starts moving her face forward. Her lips meet the red haired girls lips as she closes her eyes.
The kiss was soft not aggressive at all , Robin puts her hands on Vickie’s face as they kiss softly and slowing pull apart. “I-um I-I’m sorry I don’t know w-what I’m doing right now” Vickie says. “Oh Vick I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to I just thought you were like me” Robin says back slightly shaking and backing away , she definitely just fucked up their “friendship”. “Nono it’s fine but uh I just need some time to think thats it” Vickie says back.
It’s been 3 weeks since that incident and Robin has yet to hear back from Vickie. She wanted to call her or show up at her house but she knew she couldn’t. She felt so damn stupid for thinking Vickie liked girls the way she did. She calls up Steve for some advice. “FUCK STEVE WHAT THE HELL DO I DOOOOO” , “WHY DID I KISS HER AND WHY DID IT FEEL SO GOOD” Robin says screaming into her phone.
“Hey hey you gotta calm down man” Steve says back. “How on earth can I be calm when my other best friend has been avoiding me for weeks because I wanted to live my lesbian fantasies” Robin groans. She just really misses Vickie. “Listen maybe she just needs some time to think about all this she wouldn’t have kissed back if she wasn’t like you Robin so please stay calm”. Robin sighs , she knew Steve was right so that calmed her down a little. “You’re right dingus thanks for the advice” Robin says back.
“Yeah I’m always right and of course , just keep me updated and don’t do anything stupid anyways I gotta go Dustin is making me be a test subject for some nerdy science project ill talk to you later rob bye” Steve says. “Bye dingus dont die” robin says giggling and then hanging up the phone , she lays on her bed. She really just wants to see Vickie again and apologize.
Meanwhile Vickie was in denial and panicking about her sexuality. “NO NO NO YOU DONT LIKE GIRLS LIKE THAT VICKIE” Vickie screams at herself into the mirror. It’s been 3 weeks since she last spoke or saw Robin. She’s honestly been avoiding her , she can’t face her and she can’t face herself either. Vickie would be lying if she said the kiss didn’t feel good. It didn’t just feel good. It felt amazing. Like she was kissing an angel the taste of Robins cherry chapstick and the way she gently held Vickie’s face while they were kissing. Oh how Vickie wishes she could relive that moment.
Maybe she just needed to get her mind off of things Vickie thought to herself. She always loved driving around the town blasting music at night so she did exactly that. Vickie turns her car on and the radio. ‘Anddddd tonight we would like to play a new album’ the radio host says excitedly. Vickie’s eyes lit up she loves hearing new music , she quickly rises the volume up. ‘Immunity by Clairo , this first song is called Sofia I hope you guys enjoy’ the radio host says. Clairo.
That artist Robin introduced to her the night they kissed Vickie thought to herself. Her mood goes down , not at the thought of Robin but at the thought of her sexuality. Vickie sighs but the lyrics to the song catch her attention.
“I think we could do it if we tried if only to say , you’re mine. ”
“Sofia , know that you and I shouldn’t feel like a crime.”
Vickie sighs once and looks down , tears start forming. The lyrics hitting her. She quickly wipes them due to her driving.
The song continues going onto the bridge.
“Honey I don’t want it to fade.”
“There’s things that I know could get in the way”
“I don’t want to say goodbye , and I think we could do it if we tried.”
And that her breaking point. She could no longer hide who she truly is. Vickie pulls over at a random parking lot and breaks down. How is this song perfectly explaining her whole situation right now? As the song ends Vickie wipes her tears away , she’s not sure what to do now but she wants to see Robin Buckley.
As she prepares herself to face Robin , the girl she is hopelessly in love with the radio is still playing Clairo a different song now tho it’s called bags. She enjoys this artist Vickie thought to herself mostly because of Robin tho.
She pulls into Robins driveway. She doesn’t even know if she’ll be awake its 11pm on a Thursday. Either way she parks her car and knocks on the door.
Standing there was a slightly sleepy Robin already in her pajamas. “Oh Vick I-i didnt know you were coming are you okay-“ before Robin could finish her sentence Vickie hugs her putting her arms around her neck. “I’m so sorry for ghosting you for a few weeks…I just needed time to figure myself out…..”
Vickie says sobs in between. Robin hugs her back instantly , putting her arms around her waist and gently stroking Vickie’s red hair. They pull away and Vickie looks directly into her eyes. “Robin Buckley I am in love with you…. And I’m tired of acting like I’m not because I am. You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me.” Vickie says. Holy shit it’s actually happening Robin thought to herself. “Vickie.” Robin says taking Vickie’s hand into hers. She kisses Vickie’s lips gently pulling her by her chin to get in closer. “Vickie Dunne I’m also in love with you….i have been for quite some time.” Robin says still holding onto Vickie’s hand.
“Well that’s a relief , I came here expecting to get rejected I’m not gonna lie” Vickie says slightly embarrassed. Robin laughs , maybe a little too hard but eventually speaks up “Why on earth would I reject the most beautiful charming girl I’ve ever seen in my entire life” Robin says swinging her hands around. Vickie laughs burying her face into Robins collarbone.
“Well I don’t know , I thought you weren’t …. You know a girl kisser I’m not sure” Vickie says looking down. “Are you serious have you seen the way I dress…. Have you seen my music taste vick!?” Robin says. “WELL I KNOW BUT STILL!!” Vickie says trying to fight back. They both laugh realizing how obvious it is for Robin. “Actually that artist you made me listen to helped me realize that I was you know…”
Vickie says turning a shade of red. Robin eyes widen “WOAH REALLY!?” She says excitedly. Vickie nods her head smiling. “Well actually i recently just got her new vinyl , it’s in my room tho.” Robin says winking at her. Vickie laughs “well can I come into your room and check it out and i don’t know maybe something else may happen…” Vickie says looking up at Robin whispering it to her ear and holding Robin’s hips. “Oh yes of course you can” Robin says pulling Vickie into her house and rushing to her room.
