Chapter 1:
-Sprout-
Sprout held his hand out to Bassie, having her hold it tight before closing his eyes. Grasping his hair, or rather leaves, he wrapped them around her hand. He heard Bassie wince with a slight pain before he reopened his eyes, watching his “hair” recoil back like a slinky.
“Thanks sprout, I’ll try and be more- careful next time…” Bassie muttered, giving her best smile before stroking the hand where her wound had previously been.
“Yeah! No problem, stay safe out there.”
Bassie started to leave, but stopped in the doorway. “Hey, you should take a break, you look.. well, exhausted.”
Sprout pressed his hand to his neck sheepishly. “Yeah, well villainy doesnt take breaks I’m afraid.” He smiled at her to reassure he was fine and watched as she exited, smiling at him on her way out.
Sprout sighed, he could feel his head ache. Him and Cosmo had been healing heroes all day. There had been many recent attacks in attempts to retrieve back Astro after he’d been kidnapped by Vee, or whatever villain name she’d taken on. The others claimed they “wouldn’t rest until Astro came back safely” so god knows how long that would take. The best he could do was for him to play his part and help them. To bring his friend home.
“Hey Sprout!” ,It was Cosmos voice coming from the kitchen, “Could you help me with the dishes real quick? I’m running out of pans and bowls to cook with..”
Sprout stood up, stretching out his arms. “Sure Cosmo, be right there.” Sprout took off his medical mask and gloves, Dandy always made sure he had clean gloves on everytime he’d be in his vicinity. Sprout felt he could hear his voice now. “You coming Sprout?” Yelled Cosmo.
Entering the kitchen, Sprout could smell the air, fresh with the smell of cake. Cosmo was near the oven, mixing, what sprout assumed was cake mix, in a large bowl. He was wearing his signature hoodie and hairnet combo, even if the hair net didnt do anything, considering Cosmo didn’t have any hair. He was also showing off his favorite “kiss the cook” apron that he’d gotten as a Christmas gift from Bobbet awhile back. Cosmo had always been allowed to celebrate Christmas with the rest of the Main Association. Shelly use to say it was like they were basically one person anyway, so nobody had ever objected to it.
“Thanks for helping, take the dish rag and scrub if you can.” Sprout could bearly hear Cosmo over the sounds of the metal whisk against the bowl, but understood his instructions easily enough, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t done this before. He sat his friendship bracelet next to Cosmos, which was one of the only places in the kitchen that hadn’t been coated in a light flour dust. And started running some hot water.
Turning off the faucet, Sprout faced Cosmo. “Cosmo, you’re covered in flour, you should go wash up. I’ll bake some of the cakes for you.” Seeing as Cosmo not only was head to toe dosed in flour, but also was shaking his arm in pain from stirring, he deserved a break.
“Sprout, you know I have to be the one to bake the cakes otherwise they don’t have the healing properties.” Cosmo replied, pausing his whisking. “And don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing, I know you want to take the stuff off my plate. But you’re the one who needs to rest.”
Well damn, he’d got him there.
“You know me too well.” Sprout remarked, turning back to his dishes. “But I’m fine, no need to worry about me.”
Cosmo faced him, “I won’t worry about you if you don’t worry about me, deal?”
“Fine, if you insist, deal.” He gave Cosmo a warm smile, and Cosmo gave him one back. He turned back to his dishes, scrubbing with enough power to get the scum and any other thoughts out.
For a while the two worked in silence, before Cosmo broke it. “They’re gonna bring him back Sprout. Don’t worry.”
Sprout sighed and look down at his reflection in the bowl he’d been drying. “I know Cosmo, I’m not worried about that, I trust my friends.” He opened the cabinet above him and placed the bowl inside. “Besides why’d you think I’d be worried?”
“Your scrubbing those bowls like they owe you money, of course I can see your worried.” Cosmo digged through the fridge, searching for ingredients. “You’re overworking yourself, you’ve gotta let some of the heroes stay in the wing to recover until you’re recharged.”
“I want as many of them out there as we can get, even if I have to overwork myself I’ll keep them safe.” He asserted.
“Maybe-“ Cosmo started.
CRASH, the two heard noise from the glass door below them, it had been shattered they could only assume. Loud chattering voices were ringing in the twos ears. They ducked behind the counter, Sprout covering Cosmos mouth as footsteps up the stairs approached closer.
“We know you’re in here!” One shouted, followed by a loud crash.
“You can’t hide from us!” Another one yelled.
In the background Sprout could hear a light rustle, it sounded almost like wings flapping.
“We should split up, thats what Mrs. Vee- I mean Circut Sage said.” The one who’d made the crashing noise remarked.
Vee? Of course this attack was planned by her. What could she possibly want now?
