Chapter 1 – Digi What?
…
“Woah! Guys get over here! I found a little kid!”
“No way, oh my gosh you’re so adorable!”
“She’s way too young to be here, so how…?”
“Don’t worry, we’ll keep her safe.”
“Hi there, what’s your name?”
Terrified digimon ran for their lives as the Digimon Emperor laughed, standing upon the ledge overseeing the carnage with a twisted look of glee.
Countless black rings flew into the air behind him, before whizzing through the air with incredible speed.
“Run for your lives! It’s the evil Digimon Emperor!” A Gazimon yelled as he and his friends ran through the forest, a pointless endeavour as he and a few others were instantly caught.
The panic grew as other digimon broke from their hiding spots to make a run for it, or fly away.
All attempts ended up futile as the black rings effortlessly captured them, one by one.
One black ring in particular chased after a cat like digimon known as Gatomon, who just happened to be the partner to Kari. A Digi-destined.
With a graceful leap and some pretty impressive acrobatics, Gatomon managed to dodged the spinning object. She slipped into the overgrowth, and watches the black ring vanish.
“That... was close.” She muttered, feeling her tail flick with irritation.
The moment she stepped out to seek out the others, a Unimon reared up with a roar before aiming to attack with its horn.
“Oh for the love... I don’t have time for this!” Gatomon hissed, as she made a run for it, before being thrown aside from an attack. To her horror, she lost her tail ring in the chaos.
“No!” she cried, making a leap for it, but Unimon sent another attack, as more and more enslaved digimon appeared.
The cat digimon realised she had no choice but to abandoned it for now. It was too dangerous.
Explosions were heard, and the cries of other digimon, which cut short when claimed by a black ring.
Further and further she ran, until spotting the familiar faces of her friends.
Friends who were also being chased by a Snimon.
“Quick! Don’t let Snimon catch us! This praying mantis digimon can cut through anything with his Twin Sickles attack!” Tentomon cries as he flew next to Patamon and Biyomon.
“Guys! Over here!” Gatomon yelled, gaining their attention just as Snimon prepared for an attack.
“Twin Sickles!”
The three Digimon barely dodged as the attack sliced through the trees, toppling them over.
“This way!” Gatomon shouted, before leading the way through the undergrowth.
There were too many to fight, as more and more digimon came under the control of the Digimon Emperor.
This way and that, using the cover of trees and bushes to try and lose track of both Unimon and Snimon.
Eventually they came to a large hollowed tree and took refuge inside.
Biyomon whimpered before clasping her wings over her beak, eyes closed shut as the growls and roars grew louder around them.
Patamon crouched down, looking nervous as Tentomon’s antennas twitched.
Gatomon felt herself sweat slightly as she flexed her claws, keeping as silent as possible. Eventually the noises of Unimon and Snimon faded away into the distance, leaving a disturbing silence in their wake.
“I think they’re gone.” Patamon eventually said, and the group all let out a collective sign.
Gatomon rolled her shoulders before peeking out cautiously, then looked back at the others. “Come on, we better group back up with Tai and Agumon.”
“Agumon? He still hasn’t digivolved yet?” Tentomon asked in surprised.
Gatomon paused, then began to look grim. “He can’t, Emperor’s dark digivice is preventing Tai from Digivolving him. I don’t think any of us can if our partners were here.”
They fell silent as the grim reality hit them.
How were they suppose to stop the Digimon Emperor conquering their world if they couldn’t even digivolve? They stood no chance as rookies.
“Let’s... not think about it.” Patamon said softly. “I’m assuming Tai sent a message for help right? Let’s find them and come up with a plan.”
Everyone nodded, then took off through the forest, running as fast as they could without drawing attention.
“Well, someone is in a good mood this morning!” Diana beamed, leaning her head forward with a grin as she glanced at her best friend as they walked towards school.
“Well yeah, we have a new transfer student today. That’s all I’m going to say.” Kari smiled in a knowing way, her finger tapping her nose before giggling.
The two were complete opposites, yet had been friends for years.
Diana frowned, pouting slightly. “Awww... what’s that suppose to mean? Do you know who they are?”
Kari made a zip motion across her mouth and giggled. “Guess you’ll find out. Now come on, I don’t want to be late.”
Diana stuck out her tongue, before grinning. “Fine fine. Miss, I like to be mysterious. I’ll race ya to the classroom!”
With that she took off, laughing as Kari huffed and began to chase after her. Being the best in the girls track field team, she knew her friend didn’t stand a chance.
“Hey no fair! You know I can’t run as fast as... Diana!”
Diana ran through the school gates, and up the path past various students. Once up the steps at the entrance, she spun around with a flourish. “Hahahaha! I win slowpoke!”
Kari came running up, panting as she playfully pushed her. “You suck!”
“I know.” Diana beamed as they linked arms and began to make their way to the locker rooms first, before heading for their classroom. “I’m so glad we ended up in the same class again.”
“Me too.” Kari smiled as they walked up the stairs, being mindful of the other students around them chatting away.
“Oh yeah, did Tai finally make it to Captain position on the football team?” Diana asked. Tai was Kari’s older brother, and she had always admired the boy. He had been the one to encourage her to join the track field team last year, and she had fell in love with the spot ever since.
There was just something about running, that got the blood flowing and the heart pumping. A kind of freedom as the wind tugged at her hair.
Not to mention the familiarly of it, like she was use to the feeling of running. The girl really couldn’t explain it.
“Of course.” Kari smiled, reaching out to slide open the door to their classroom. “He wouldn’t stop talking about it when he received the letter. Mom even made a cake to celebrate, and we didn’t get sick like last time.”
The two took their seats at the front row, placing their bags down.
The door slides open, and the classroom quieten down as the teacher walked in, his hands pushing up his glasses as he did so. Behind him trailed a boy with blonde hair, a confident and excited expression on his face.
He seemed to look around, and his eyes brighten up when they landed on Kari.
Diana frowned as she leaned her chin on her hand, elbow on the table as she watched this new kid. This was obviously the new transfer student her Kari had been mysterious about.
From the way the two looked at each other, Diana felt a sense of… jealously. Kari was her best friend after all.
“I’m Mr. Hamasaki, I’ll be your teacher this year, and I’d like you to all welcome a new student.” Mr Hamasaki said, giving a polite smile as he gestured to the eager boy next to him who was now smiling brightly at the class.
“Nice to meet you. I’m TK!”
Mr. Hamasaki nodded and gestured towards the empty seat on Kari other side. “You can take a seat next to the girl with the...camera around her neck.”
TK walked over and took his seat, before leaning forward as he clasped his hands together, beaming at Kari. “Together again!”
“Just like old times.” Kari giggled, looking extremely happy herself. Then she turned to Diana and raised her hand. “Diana, this is my old friend from waaaay back. We kinda ended up on a few adventures together. TK, this is my friend Diana.”
“Best friend.” Diana said, giving the blonde boy a glare.
Kari didn’t seem to notice, but TK blinked before grinning. Then he turned his attention to the camera girl. “Don’t you think our teacher kinda looks like...Ogremon?”
Ogremon? What the heck was that? Whatever it was, Kari burst out laughing as Diana leaned back in her seat, grumbling slightly.
Stupid pretty boy…
After class had ended, the students filed out into the corridors chatting away. Diana walked next to Kari, feeling annoyed as TK chatted away non-stop. She was started to feel like a third wheel here.
“Oh, wow TP, very interesting.” She said loudly, before linking arms with her friend.
“TP?” The blonde boy said with amusement, as if finding Diana entertaining.
Kari however, gave her a disapproving glance. “His name is TK, stop being rude.” She then turned her head towards the boy. “So, TK, how does your mom like the new apartment?”
“She hasn’t seen it! She’s been on the computer the whole time.” He laughed.
Diana huffed and pulled her arm back, feeling even more annoyed now as they arrived at the lockers to fetch their belongings.
“Diana?”
She looked up at TK who was now leaning against the lockers with his arms crossed, as Kari kneeled down to open her locker. “I’m not going to steal away your friend you know, so chill with the attitude. It doesn’t suit that pretty face of yours.”
Diana blinked. Wait… did he just say…
“Hey!” Someone yelled loudly, making the three of them jump in surprise and look over.
“Huh? Oh, hi Yolei!” TK smiled, waving a hand lazily.
“Wait, you know Yolei?” Diana asked in surprise, as the girl with the long hair and round glasses came to a stop in front of them.
Yolei lived in the same apartment as she did. They saw each other often, but they weren’t exactly friends. The two often clashed when it came to academics.
“Yeah, I moved to her apartment complex. We saw each other this morning when leaving for school.” TK smiled as he explained.
“Me and Cody did.” Yolei nodded, before giving a pointed look at Diana. “Maybe if you hadn’t rushed off this morning, you would have seen him too.”
“Oh, you live there too?” The blonde boy grinned as Diana groaned and rubbed her face.
Yolei opened her mouth, then gasped and turned to Kari as if she had suddenly remembered why she had come rushing into the locker room in the first place. “You’re Kari Kamiya, aren’t you?”
“Yes, why do you ask?” She asked, now standing up.
“Are you related to Tai? He sent this email!” Yolei said as she raised up a sheet of paper. On it was a screen-print of an email.
“Come to the digital world? Need help?” Diana blinked. Digital world… hadn’t she heard that before?
Kari quickly read the message, then sucked in a breath as she turned to TK. “My brother needs us!”
“Then what are we waiting for?” he nodded before looking at Yolei. Together they rushed out of the locker room and up the stairs, then down the hall towards the direction of the computer room.
Before they could reach the doors, an older boy approached them, his red hair spiky.
“Yolei! I’m glad I ran into you. I need to use the computer room right away!” The spiky haired boy said, looking slightly frantic and worried.
Yolei gasped and clapped her hands together, looking flustered. “You mean the legendary former computer club president is looking for me? I’m honoured!”
“What’s up, Izzy?” TK quickly asked, looking worried. “Did you get an email from Tai too?”
Izzy nodded. “Yes. I was just about to send an answer when the battery ran out on my computer.” He then barged his way into the computer room, throwing the door wide open.
Another boy was already here, clearly waiting for them. It was Cody, another kid that lived in the same apartment as Diana, Yolei and TK.
Cody nodded at them in greeting, as stoic as ever as he moved back for Izzy.
“I knew I should have recharged it after I played Trigonometry trivia on the Internet last night. But boy, talk about fun!” He grinned as he threw himself into a chair and booted up the computer.
Diana raised an eyebrow as she and the others crowded behind the spiky haired boy. Fun? What was fun about that? No wonder Yolei idolised him, they were both nerds.
Izzy pulled up his email account that showed the message from Tai, and began to type a response before hitting send.
“So what’s the digital world? Is it a new theme park? I bet they have some great rides!” Yolei chirped up, clearly trying to get the boys attention.
Digital world... Diana definitely heard that word before but where... oh!
She clicked her fingers, gaining the others attention. “I heard about the Digital World from Tai once. He said there were a lot of Digimon there. Whatever they are. I thought the guy was just pulling my leg though.”
TK blinked at her, looking surprised. “You know Tai?”
“Well duh, Kari is my best friend remember? Of course I know Tai.” She said, rolling her eyes before being nudged by Kari slightly.
“I’ve got an idea! Let’s all go to the Digital World!” Yolei said, sounding cheerful as she raised a finger.
Izzy bit his lip and glanced at Kari and TK who stared back. Diana frowned at them, but Cody simply sighed as he stepped back and crossed his arms.
“Yolei, weren’t you coming over? You said you’d fix my computer!”
“Oh, sorry. I forgot.” The purple haired girl cringed, looking apologetic at Cody.
“You did promise.” The small boy pointed out.
Yolei sighed and seemed to become deflated. “I know... we’ll see you guys later.”
With that, the two left the computer room.
Izzy was paying them no mind as he pulled up a strange looking program on the monitor. It was green with strange symbols Diana had never seen before, and in the middle was a small window that was displaying an image.
Somewhere outside that she had never seen before, yet there was something familiar about it... something that seem to tug at her in a weird way.
“We’re going back to the digital world! Prodigious!” Izzy exclaimed with delight, as a green light pinged up on the strange program on the computer screen.
“I’m going with you!” Diana quickly said as she leaned over his shoulder, her hand on the back of his chair.
“That’s impossible!” TK said, shaking his head as she turned her head to glare at him. “Not just anybody can go. You need a digivice.”
Kari nodded as she stood next to him.
A digivice? Didn’t Tai mention something about that before?
Diana opened her mouth to retort, when Izzy suddenly pushed himself away from the computer with a startled gasp.
Everyone stopped and saw exactly what had taken the spiky haired boy by surprise. The computer screen was lit up brightly, then suddenly three lights came flying out.
Two of the lights shot towards the open door and vanished down the hallway. The third light flew straight to Diana’s hands, feeling warm before transforming into a strange device that dropped into her hands.
“Don’t cry Diana... we’ll see each again, I just know it. I'll be waiting, so be brave until then... ok?”
Diana jerked and blinked rapidly, as everything swam back into focus. What was that voice just now... like it came from her head.
A memory?
“A digivice!” TK gasped as he, Kari and Izzy all stared in shock. Then as one, they pulled out their own digivice that looked different.
“It’s a different model than the ones we have.” Kari said as she walked over to Diana to compare the two.
Diana looked at her friend. “Ok, I’m having a sleepover at your place tonight, and you’re going to explain everything to me. I seriously thought your brother was pranking me about this digital world stuff.”
“Fine, but only if you promise to cook tonight.” Kari giggled, looking amused now.
“Deal.” She grinned, playfully nudging the camera loving girl.
Izzy cleared his throat. “We better go now, while the gate to the digital world is still open.”
“How long will it be open for?” TK asked as he walked closer to the computer.
“Do you think I can get Donkey Madness on this thing?” Diana whispered to Kari with a grin, giving her digivice a slight shake before sniggering when her friend playfully slapped her shoulder.
“It’s not a game!” Izzy suddenly snapped, looking at Diana in disapproval. “If the digital world sends you a digivice, then there must be a reason and you should take it seriously.”
“Oh, lighten up.” She huffed before sticking out her tongue. Izzy looked offended while TK raised a hand to stifle a laugh.
Kari shook her head, before walking over to the computer and raising her digivice. “I’m not waiting any longer. I’m going to help my brother.”
“Woah!” Diana gasped as she literally watched her friend get sucked into the computer.
“Well?” TK grinned at her, his eyes shining as he gestured to the computer. “Ladies first, unless you’re scared.”
She hissed at the teasing tone to his voice. “Shut it TS, I'm scared of nothing!”
“It’s TK.”
Diana ignored him as she raised her digivice, then braced herself. What came next was the weirdest sensation ever as her body was sucked into the computer and became digitised.
Yet as she flew through what she could only describe as some kind of vortex of data, there was a feeling of deja vu... like she had done this before.
But that was impossible right?
Before she could think more on it, she was suddenly spat out of some kind of television set and landed on her back.
Bright blue skies met her gaze as she blinked, feeling a gentle breeze and hearing the rustling of trees.
Then the view of Kari appeared as she leaned over Diana, smiling with excitement. “Welcome to the digital world Dia.”
She held out her hand which Diana took, helping to pull her up on her feet.
Around the same time, TK arrived by landing on his feet.
“My first time being downloaded. Pretty cool.” She grinned, then let go of Kari’s hand as she looked around. “So, this is the digital world? It looks just like our world... almost.”
She then looked down at herself and gasped. “Why did my clothes change!?”
Kari shook her head, looking just as surprised considering she and TK still looked the same. “I have no idea.”
“You look cute though.” TK smiled.
Cute!?
“I am not cute!” Diana blushed, stamping her foot as she glared
The blonde boy was about to say something, when Kari suddenly raised her hand to gain their attention. Her digivice was in her other hand and beeping. “I have Tai’s signal. Huh...it’s over this way!”
She turned and began to run, her camera around her neck swinging with every step.
“Wait, what about the others?” Diana said as she turned towards the television set they had came from, then blinked at the video playing.
Wait, it wasn’t a video. She was actually seeing Izzy, who seemed to be trying to calm down an angry Yolei who was waving something in her hand.
“Don’t worry about him, we need to catch up to Kari.” TK said, before rushing after the girl. Diana turned away from the screen and began to run, easily bypassing the boy as she caught up with Kari.
They were running through the forest now, and she couldn’t help looking around in wonder at it all. “This place doesn’t seem so scary. The way Tai described it, there were monsters everywhere! Huh?”
Diana slowed down as a random vending machine appeared, just sitting out here in the middle of the forest. She came to a stop, and reached out to press a button. “No way… does it actually work?”
Before her finger could press the soda button of her choice, the flap below snapped open as a torrent of bright green slug looking monsters began to pour out. A few even shrieked at Diana as she fell backwards on her butt screaming.
Kari and TK who has stopped to watch with amusement, burst out laughing at the sight.
“Haha...very funny! Jerks!” She snapped, blushing hard in embarrassment.
“Sorry, but it was just too funny.” TK grinned as he walked over and offered his hand. “They’re Numemon, one of the many Digimon that live here.”
“Yeah, tons of them. Most are much cuter than what you just saw.” Kari beamed.
“And a lot scarier ones, too!” TK added, pulling Diana to her feet after she took his hand.
Diana quickly let go and looked around. “I’m assuming they all don’t come out of vending machines then. That’s so crazy. Oh, and thanks TD.”
“TK.” The blond boy said bemused as he crossed his arms behind his head.
“They’re close by.” Came a voice just up ahead, causing the three to turn around. Out of the bushes appeared Tai, along with other strange monsters that must be more Digimon.
One of them, that looked like an orange pillow with tiny legs and large bat like wings on its head went flying straight at TK the moment he saw him. “TK!”
“Patamon!” The boy gasped with joy, raising his hands forward to catch the Digimon before hugging him close. “Am I glad to see you!”
Another Digimon that looked like a cat with gloved paws came running right for Kari.
“Gatomon!” Kari cried, tears in her eyes as she fell to her knees and hugged the Digimon tightly after she had leaped into her lap.
Tai came running over, looking pleased to see them. “You guys made it! D-Diana!? What are you doing here?” He asked, looking gobsmacked to see Diana here.
“I got this after it flew out of the computer.” She said, unclipping her digivice and showing it to the older boy. “Then I came with Kari to help you after we received your message and… is that a dinosaur!?”
The dinosaur gave her a toothy grin before holding out it’s clawed hand. “Hiya! I’m Agumon, Tai’s partner.”
“You have a digivice? So that’s what those lights were earlier…” Tai muttered to himself before grinning. “This is great!”
“Gatomon, your tail ring! Tell me what happened!” Kari suddenly gasped, her eyes on her partner’s tail.
Gatomon stepped back and sighed. “I lost it when I was attacked. This bossy human just appeared one day, started making Digimon his slaves using these black rings. He calls himself the Digimon Emperor, the jerk.”
“You mean there are more humans besides us? There goes the neighbourhood...” TK sighed, as Patamon lay on his head.
“Yeah, and he’s got this strange new dark digivice that makes us unable to digivolve!” Agumon added, looking angry. Then he blinked, looking surprised as he turned to Diana. “Come to think of it, your digivice looks just like his.”
“Really? I mean..., I literally just got this like I said.” Diana said, holding it up and not failing to see the look of suspicion on Gatomon’s face. “Three lights came out of the computer, and one of them was this.”
Tai nodded, looking serious now. “We not long found a cave with a Digiegg inside. It had my crest of courage on it, so I tried picking it up. The thing wouldn’t budge, but it did shoot out three lights.”
“So, three new digivices.” Kari said softly. “Dia’s a new digidestined.”
“Seems so.” TK nodded. “Question is, who got the other two?”
Diana looked down at her digivice, her thumb brushing over the screen.
“As long as you have that, I’ll have the power to protect you! Nothing is gonna lay a hand on you while I’m here!”
She jerked from the voice in her head and turned around, staring out at the forest. Another memory?
“Diana, come on!” Kari called as she and the others began to walk off.
“Coming!” She called, clipping the device back on her belt and running after the group, easily catching up.
TK leaned in close. “Everything ok? You kind of looked spaced out there.”
“Yeah, it was funny.” Patamon giggled from atop his head.
“I’m fine, just…” She trailed off as Kari linked arms with her.
“Overwhelmed? I was like that too when I first came to the Digital World. You have no idea how excited I am that you’re a digidestine too! We have so much to talk about tonight.”
Diana grinned, looking forward to her sleep over. Take that TK.
The group continued through the forest, following the lead of Tai and Agumon as they walked ahead. Soon enough, a cave came into view.
“The dark digivice from the emperor is draining our power and making us weak as newborn kittens.” Gatomon explained as they headed inside, her tail flicking in agitation.
Agumon nodded. “It’s stopping us from digivolving. If I could still turn into Greymon, that Emperor wouldn’t stand a chance!”
“You got that right buddy.” Tai grinned, raising a fist.
“Just don’t like the black rings get you.” Patamon pointed out.
Kari growled, looking angry. “That Digimon Emperor, I’ll like to slap a ring on him! Who does he think he is, enslaving innocent Digimon like that?”
“He sounds like a real jerk face.” Diana added, slapping her fist against her open hand. “All this digi stuff is new to me, and even I’m angry at what he’s doing to these guys.”
No one noticed the floating black ring in the darkness, silently watching them as a small red light blinked.
They were now approaching some kind of raised platform made of rock in the middle of the cave. On top, illuminated by the sunlight from the gap in the ceiling of the cave, sat a flame patterned egg with a razor-sharp spike.
“Looks like a deflated beachball! No wonder, it has a spike through it!” TK exclaimed as they stopped around the platform, all staring at the strange object.
“Yeah, plus it’s heavier than my mom’s meatloaf.” Tai laughed as he raised his hand to rub his head, his other on his hip. Kari giggled in amusement.
TK stepped forward and gripped the strange egg with his hands, before pulling.
“Come on TK! You can do it!” Patamon cheered from his head.
He gasped and gave up, rubbing his hands together. “It won’t budge!”
“Move over. This is a woman’s job!” Kari grinned, as she stepped up next to have a go. Once again, the egg wouldn’t budge at all. It was like the thing was glue down or something.
She sighed before stepping back and smiling at Diana. “Go on Dia, give it a go.”
“Alright, guess it won’t hurt. Let me show you weaklings how it’s done.” Diana grinned as she made a show of rolling up her sleeves.
Tai rolled his eyes with a smirk. “Just get on with.”
She stepped up and gripped the egg, feeling a slight tingle the moment her hands touched the surprisingly warm metal. She gritted her teeth, and tugged with all her strength, not expecting the egg to move at all.
However, it lifted up as if weightless. Due to this, Diana stumbled back with a yelp and fell back on her butt painfully.
“Woah! You actually did it!” TK gasped, looking amazed.
Tai however, looked suddenly concerned. “There’s a problem!”
It became apparent why, when a bright light shot up from the hole where the egg had sat.
Diana watched with her mouth open, as a small blue creature began to form within the bright light. Her heart clenched painfully as she stared, feeling a strange emotion bubbled up slightly. Like a mixture of sadness and joy rolled into one.
The feeling you have when seeing a friend after so many years apart. Yet the girl was certain she had never been to the digital world before, let alone meet a digimon.
The blue Digimon finally opened its eyes that were deep ruby red, which instantly locked onto Diana who gulped and scooted back a bit. Then…
“Yahooo!” It cried, leaping out of the light which vanished the moment it left it. The Digimon then landed in front of Diana and began to jump around her with upmost glee with its hands in the air. “Free at last! Free at last! You moved the digiegg!”
The blue Digimon stopped in front of her and held out his hand, grinning wildly. “My name’s Veemon. But you can just call me Veemon.”
Diana blinked. “Uh, hi, I’m Diana…” Wow, he seemed super friendly and cheerful.
Veemon tilted his head, then leaned in and sniffed. “Wow, you smell familiar. Have we met be---ugh!”
“Don’t sniff me!” Diana said, using her hand to shove the Digimon’s face away. “That’s super weird to do to a girl you know!”
“I’ve heard of Veemon!” Agumon gasped, clicking his claws together as he gained everyone’s attention. “Supposedly he’s a fun-loving, adventure-seeking little digimon that brings you good luck. But I thought he was just a legend!”
Veemon grinned and licked Diana’s hand, making her yelp and pull it back. “Nope! I’m real and I’ve been waiting my whole life to meet you, Diana!”
“Uh, I think you’ve got the wrong girl. I’ve only just learned about Digimon like… today.” She said, rubbing her hand on her jacket to wipe off his drool.
“Nope, you’re the one all right, because you were the only one who was able to move the digiegg of courage!” Veemon beamed, leaning in closer. “Happy to finally be with you, partner!”
She opened her mouth, only to stop when the cave they were in began to shake and tremble violently. “What’s that, an earthquake?”
“No, look up there!” TK yelled, pointing up at the gap in the ceiling of the cave. A huge dinosaur looking Digimon was forcing its way through, sending falling rocks and debris tumbling down. It opened its maw and roared angrily with its eyes glowing red. All of them could see a black ring around its body.
“It’s Monochromon!” Kari gasped, backing up to avoid some of the falling rocks.
With another roar, the Monochromon burst through and landed in front of them with a heavy thud sending tremors through the ground.
Agumon jumped in front of the group. “Pepper breath!” It let out a blast of fire at the Monochromon, which hit its face.
“Boom bubble!” Patamon yelled, joining in on the attack.
“Volcanic Strike!” The larger Digimon retaliated, more angry than hurt as flames began to build up in its mouth.
“Get out of the cave!” Tai yelled. No one need telling twice as they all turned and began to race towards the exit.
There was a blast from behind and a rumble as they all reached outside. Diana was terrified as she picked up the pace, never expecting to be in this much danger.
Tai, TK and Kari slid down the small cliff ahead, but Diana stopped and looked back. “Why is it attacking us? Is it the emperor?”
Veemon grabbed her arm, looking determined. “Diana, hurry up and open the digiegg!”
“Huh? This thing? How?” she said, looking down at the strange egg in her hands.
“Diana, get down here! It’s not safe!” Tai yelled, his hands cupping his mouth.
“VOLCANIC STRIKE!”
Diana gasped and spun around, eyes widening in fear as she saw a blast of fire heading straight for her, her body freezing up.
“Diana!” Veemon yelled as he tackled her, sending them both over the edge and tumbling down the cliff to avoid the blast, which almost hit Kari too if she hadn’t dodged at the last second.
Over and over she tumbled, before finally reaching the bottom and landing flat on her back. Her body ached all over, the goggles on her head now over her face with the lenses shattered.
“Diana, are you okay? Tell me what hurts!” Veemon said as he appeared next to her, looking concerned.
“Everything but my earlobes.” She groaned, slowly sitting up with a wince. Her body felt sore all over. Her broken goggles fell into her lap, which she picked up and tossed away.
The blue digimon lay his hand on her arm, his other hand clenching into a fist. “You control the digiegg of courage! You’ve got to use your courage to open it up!”
Courage? How could she, when she was so terrified right now.
“I...”
“Diana! Get up, it’s not safe!” Tai yelled, running over to her and holding out his hand, worry and concern on his face.
“I’m not a damsels in distress ya know.” Diana grumbled as she took his hand and got to her feet.
Veemon made a noise and quickly stood between the two, staring up at her with a hard expression. “I can digivolve if you open up the digiegg, but you have to have courage to do it! I know you’re scared, but I need you to trust me!”
“Veemon...” Diana stared down at him.
“Tai!” Agumon yelled, running up to them followed by TK and Patamon. “We’ve got to get out of here!”
There was a roar, and they all looked up in alarm as Monochromon soared above their heads, heading straight for Kari who was on the ground, rubbing her ankle. She and Gatomon looked up and cried out in fear.
“Kari no!” Tai yelled, running desperately towards his sister. “Move!”
“Kari!” Diana cried, knowing full well that her friend wouldn’t get out of the way in time.
Then without realising what she was doing, she raised the digiegg above her head. “Digiarmour Energize!”
Veemon began to glow, before being engulfed in a ball of energy.
“Veemon, armour digivolve to... Flamedramon!”
The ball of energy shattered, revealing a brand new digimon.
Flamedramon leaped towards Monochromon with incredible speed. “Fire Rocket!”
His clawed fist burst into flames, which he slammed into the dinosaur, sending it flying away from Kari and Gatomon.
“Armour digivolve?” TK blinked, as Tai reached Kari and helped her to her feet.
Diana cheered, before noticing her digivice glowing. A light burst from the screen and towards her pocket, which suddenly felt heavy. She reached inside and pulled out a new strange device, which flipped open to reveal a screen that showed a model of... the digiegg?
“Woah...”
There was a crash, and Diana looked up to see Flamedramon land another attack on the Monochromon, the force so strong it shattered the ring around it’s midriff.
Flamedramon glowed, before transforming back to Veemon.
Diana was amazed by the sheer power such a tiny creature could hold. Then without thinking, she ran over to the blue digimon and fell to her knees to hug him tightly. “That was amazing! I’m so glad you took down that digimon and saved Kari! You’re the best Veevee!”
Then she blinked, before quickly pulling away with embarrassment. What was she doing, hugging and giving the digimon a nickname like that? They only just met today!
“Sorry!”
Veemon blinked, before looking extremely happy. “Sorry? That was the best hug I ever had!”
Diana smiled and got up on her feet, before looking towards the others.
Kari and Tai were fussing over the Monochromon who now seemed to be friendly without the influence of the black ring.
TK stood next to her, hands in his pockets as they both watched Monochromon finally leave. “I can’t believe the Digimon Emperor could turn such a nice digimon into such an evil creature.”
“Yeah, so I guess me and Veemon will have to continue working together fighting the Emperor.” Diana beamed before holding out a fist to Veemon, who grinned and bumped his own fist against hers.
“You know it!” the blue digimon laughed.
TK laughed, looking amused. “Glad to see you two getting along already.”
“Yeah, it’s like your already best friends.” Patamon added with a smile.
Diana grinned, before turning her attention to Kari and Tai as they walked over.
“Hey, guys, that Armour digivolving was pretty cool!” Tai said, grinning widely as he kept his arm around his sister, supporting her.
Agumon nodded next to them. “Even though the rest of us can’t digivolve, I’m sure that you new kids will be able to take care of the Digimon Emperor with no problem!”
“Yeah! Leave it to us!” Veemon cheered, puffing out his chest.
Tai laughed, before turning his attention to Diana. “You were really brave back there in that battle, but I noticed that you broke your goggles. And as we know, the leader of the digidestined just wouldn’t look right without them. So here, I want you to have mine.”
With that, he slipped the goggles off his head, and held them out.
She stared, before slowly reaching out to take them. She couldn’t believe the boy was giving something to her that meant so much to him...
“Wow Tai... I... I don’t know what to say. Are you sure it’s ok for me to be the leader?” Diana said, looking up at him.
“I have a feeling it’s meant to be. Everything happens for a reason in the digital world.” Tai nodded, smiling as he reached out and ruffled her head.
She grinned before pulling on the goggles. Somehow, they felt right sitting on her head.
“They look real cute.” TK grinned, as he leaned to the side for a better look.
“S-Shut it TL, I’m not cute!” She stammered, glaring at him as Kari laughed behind her hand.
“It’s TK.”
“Whatever!”
Patamon looked up at the sky from his partners head. “Good. The sun’s going down. Now we can relax!”
“Why’s that?” TK asked, looking up slightly with a questioning expression.
It was Gatomon who answered. “Because the Digimon Emperor never appears at night.”
“Excuse me, Tai, but it’s getting kind of late. Don’t you guys need to go home soon?” Agumon spoke up, tugging slightly on Tai’s pants leg.
He looked down at him and nodded. “That’s right. But I’m not even sure if we can get home. Guess we’ll have to try.”
With that, they began to walk back through the forest towards the TV set, with TK and Diana leading the way.
When they arrived, they saw the screen was lit up, showing the computer room with Izzy, Cody and Yolei all sat together eating... brownies?
“What the... hey! Are they eating brownies without us? Jerks.” Diana grumbled before squatting down and tapping the screen with her fist. “Hey! Save some for us!”
Kari giggled. “Dia, knock it off. They can’t hear you.”
“You sure about that?” TK said, as the three stopped eating and turned as one towards them with expressions of surprise.
Then without warning, Diana and the others were suddenly sucked right into the tv, popping out and landing in a pile right on top of the others in the computer room.
Groans and yelps of pain were heard as everyone tried to scramble apart.
“Get off! You’re crushing my brownies!” Cody gave a muffled yell.
Diana yelped as Izzy pulled free underneath her, making her fall on her back on the floor, which caused TK to land right on top of her with a grunt.
“G-Get off me!” she growled, blushing at being pinned down beneath the boy.
“I’m trying, but Kari’s on my legs.” TK hissed, his own cheeks going red.
“Sorry!” Kari said.
Finally, everyone managed to free themselves and get to their feet.
Diana brushed herself down, then blinked and looked around. When she saw no sight of Veemon or the other digimon, she turned to the computer screen.
Unfortunately, the digital gate was closed, and Diana felt a sudden feeling of sadness and something else. It made sense that the digimon couldn’t come with them, yet already she was missing Veemon.
Despite only meeting him today, she already felt a strong connection with the little blue guy.
“It’s ok.” Kari said softly, placing her hand on her shoulder. “You’ll see him again soon.”
Diana smiled at her and nodded. “Yeah, guess the little guy already grew on me. It’s weird.”
She then looked down at her digivice, realising that from now on... nothing would be the same again.
And to her surprise, Diana felt excitement for the grand adventure ahead.
So it begins... I hope you are ready Diana.
Your return has set the wheels in motion, and now nothing can stop what is to come.
I only hope that you can remember before it’s too late.
For all of us.
