“It ain’t gonna be that bad,” said Sam, putting the bags in the car. Bucky sighed.

“It’s absolute chaos over there,” he replied, getting into the car and putting his sunglasses on. Sam got in the driver’s seat.

“Well… you’re not completely wrong,” said Sam, biting his lip. They were having an extension built onto their house, and they had to go live with the rest of the avengers while that was happening. Sarah offered them the opportunity to stay with her, but Sam said it would be nice to see Steve and the others. Bucky and Sam were used to the peace and quiet of their house out in Louisiana, and were not particularly looking forward to the chaos of the compound. Sam turned the key in the ignition and started driving. Bucky plugged his phone into the stereo and started playing some music.

“Sammy, I’m hungry,” said Bucky after about twenty minutes. Sam pointed to the bag by Bucky’s feet.

“There’s food in there,” said Sam, keeping his eyes on the road. Bucky dug in the bag, but found nothing he wanted.

“I want a pretzel,” said Bucky eventually.

Sam raised an eyebrow. “You just had to be that specific, huh?”

Bucky nodded, a smirk on his face. Sam laughed, shaking his head.

They had arrived at the compound, Bucky eating a second pretzel since they got a few. They went inside, bringing their bags with them. Steve was there to greet them.

“Bucky! Sam!” He said, running to hug them. Bucky and Sam almost dropped their bags as they were squeezed in an embrace.

“Good to see you, Steve,” said Sam, giving Steve a thankful look as he took some of the bags. Bucky took a bite of his pretzel.

“What he said,” Bucky said through a mouthful, pointing to Sam. Steve smiled and patted Bucky on the back, causing him to choke on his pretzel. After Bucky had successfully not died, Steve showed them where they’d be staying, and they dumped all their bags in there. They spent the rest of the day training and sparring. Sam swore Bucky would never pass up an opportunity to beat him in a fight.

“I’m so tired,” groaned Sam, flopping onto the bed. Bucky smiled, shutting the door and throwing his jacket off onto a chair in the corner.

“Yeah we’ll probably be sore tomorrow,” said Bucky, sitting down next to Sam and putting a hand on his back. Sam turned his head to look at him.

“I’m not looking forward to that,” said Sam sleepily. Bucky rubbed his hand softly up and down Sam’s back.

“Well, let’s just face that when we come to it,” said Bucky, glancing behind him at the window. Sam mumbled something before closing his eyes. Bucky stroked his cheek with a loving smile on his face. Sam opened his eyes again.

“What? I wanna go to sleep.” He sighed.

“The bed is comfy, you should join me.” Sam added with a small smile.

“Well, let’s get ready for bed first. You should have a shower and get into your Pajamas. I’ll go after you," said Bucky, still stroking Sam’s cheek. Sam nodded slowly.

“Alright.”

Sam and Bucky were headed to the park for some fresh air. As they left their room in the compound, Bucky immediately pulled Sam back as a water balloon was aimed for his head. It hit the ground a few feet away from them. They looked down the hallway and saw a vent closing.

“Clint,” Sam said with a small laugh. Bucky furrowed his eyebrows.

“That was close,” he said, grabbing Sam’s hand and running down the corridor.

“We have to avoid being hit by any others!” Said Bucky. They got very close to being pelted with almonds at one point, and more water balloons. Clint dropped down from the vent in front of them. He held up a water balloon. Bucky glanced around, there was nowhere to run.

“Haha, I’ve got you this time,” said Clint, aiming the balloon. Sam put his arms in front of his face. A few seconds later, they were both soaking wet from the impact of the balloon. Clint then disappeared into the vent again. Sam couldn’t help but laugh.

“Doesn’t he have something better to do?” Asked Bucky slightly irritatedly. Sam moved Bucky’s wet hair out of his face.

“Apparently not,” said Sam with a smile. Bucky bit his lip, unable to hold back a smile. Sam’s smile was so contagious that he couldn’t help it. He leaned forward and kissed Sam on the lips. They both laughed. They went back to their room and got changed into some dry clothes, and then they successfully made it out of the compound.

Sam skipped a stone on the lake. It wasn’t a particularly sunny day, quite grey and cloudy really. Bucky kept looking around, keeping close to Sam in a protective sort of way. Sam noticed this. They sat down on a bench, and Bucky was still looking around, as if searching for any danger he would have to protect Sam from. Though, he knew really that Sam was a trained avenger and didn’t need protecting, but Bucky felt like it was his responsibility to keep Sam safe.

“Hey,” Sam said, trying to get Bucky’s attention. Bucky turned to him, a small smile appearing on his face.

“Hey,” Replied Bucky, putting his arm behind Sam on the back of the bench.

“Relax,” said Sam, closing his eyes and leaning his head back. Bucky bit his lip.

“Easier said than done,” he replied. Sam opened one eye, turning his head in Bucky’s direction.

“Is it? You just gotta stop tryin’ so hard,” Sam said, taking Bucky’s hand and kissing his knuckles. Bucky’s smile widened ever so slightly. Bucky closed his eyes and took some deep breaths. He took in all the sounds around him. The birds singing, the water rippling, the trees swaying in the wind… Sam singing. Bucky opened his eyes. He watched Sam closely, seeing his lips move ever so slightly as lyrics came from them. Quiet, yet still apparent. Bucky closed his eyes again, smiling as he listened to Sam’s voice. It was beautiful, and calming. Sam smiled, looking over at Bucky and seeing him totally relaxed. He was always so tense, as if waiting for the next fight. Sam wanted to help him be more calm and at peace.

Sam’s phone buzzed. He took it out of his pocket and saw a text from Steve.

“Buck,” said Sam, slight worry in his tone. Bucky opened his eyes, sensing the fear in Sam’s voice.

“What?” Asked Bucky, standing up immediately. Sam stood up, still staring at his phone.

“Steve lost Alpine,” said Sam. Bucky’s mouth fell open.

“We need to get back and find her!” Said Bucky, grabbing Sam’s hand and pulling him the direction of the compound. They got back and with the help of Steve, Natasha, Tony, Bruce, Clint, Thor, Loki, Wanda, Pietro and Vision, they eventually found Alpine. Bucky flopped onto the bed that night, taking Alpine from Sam’s arms and cuddling her close to his chest.

“Well that was stressful,” said Bucky, exhaling a heavy breath. Sam lay down next to him.

“Yeah. You scared us, Alpine!” Said Sam, stroking the cat. Alpine didn’t seem very phased by the panic.

“Let’s never have Steve look after Alpine again,” said Bucky, kissing the top of Alpine’s head. Alpine snuggled into Bucky’s chest, liking the attention. Sam chuckled.

“That might be a good idea,” said Sam, leaning forward and kissing Bucky’s lips. Bucky smiled, returning the kiss.

They had been at the compound for about a month now, and dodging things aimed by Clint had become a daily occurrence for them. They’d even started fighting back, and it had become some sort of a war. Sam opened the door.

“Is it clear?” Asked Bucky. Sam looked back at him, and then back into the hallway.

“Yeah,” said Sam. “Coast’s clear.”

They left the room as quietly as possible, and they managed to make it out of the bedroom hall. On their way up the stairs to the living floor, Bucky froze suddenly. Sam frowned.
“Buck? What is it?” Asked Sam, putting a hand on his shoulder. Bucky grabbed Sam’s hand.

“Clint. I hear him in the vents,” said Bucky, pulling Sam up the stairs at a faster pace. Sam’s eyes widened. They rushed up the stairs, and into the living room. Bucky ripped a panel off the wall and grabbed a water gun, throwing one to Sam. They prepared for battle. They waited for at least five minutes, with a Tony walking in at one point, asking them what they were doing, to which they answered that they were at war with Clint. Tony just left the room again with his coffee. Then, Clint appeared and they shot him with their water guns. Sam laughed in triumph.
“Now who’s soaking wet!” He said, very excited by their win. Clint frowned.

“Dang, I wasn’t expecting that,” he said, his clothes dripping all over the floor. Tony rushed in again, almost slipping on the water.

“Clint! Get out, you’re making my floors all wet!” Said Tony, pushing Clint out of the room. Bucky and Sam high-fived.

“We got him,” said Bucky, a grin on his face. Sam kissed his cheek.

“Yes we did.”

It had been a couple more months, and they were on their way home. Bucky was driving this time, and Sam was playing the music. They had a nicer time at the compound than they had expected, and they were somewhat sad to be leaving. But they were looking forward to getting back to the peace and quiet of home. After a long car journey, they turned into the drive and parked the car. They got out and stared at the house. The extension looked great. All of their bags were dumped inside and Sam started on dinner. Bucky fed Alpine, stroking her softly as she ate. Bucky glanced over at Sam. He bit his lip, grinning. Sam looked so handsome. Bucky caught himself staring as Sam looked over in his direction. He had a loving look in his eyes.

“Just admiring the view,” said Bucky, making Sam chuckle. They sat down to eat. They were having pizza, because it was easy and they just got back. They were pretty tired from the drive. Bucky looked up from his plate. Sam smiled, blowing a kiss at him. Bucky’s cheeks flushed red.

“You dork,” he said, looking away. Sam laughed. After dinner, they headed straight to bed. It had been a lot of driving that day, and they needed to rest. They flopped onto bed together and fell asleep almost instantly.
