Work Text:

Things like these were unheard of- a Care Bear being born in such a place of darkness… alone. A tall purple figure would find the small blue bear and take her in, raising her alongside others like her, but not. A bear born of the hypocrisies of humanity, one whose name was-

“OCEAN BREEZE!”

It was her, kind of, father calling her. Loud and boisterous were definitely descriptors that could be used for that man, especially loud. Breeze put the vials of the different water contaminants she was studying back down in their holders and started her trek down to see what her father wanted.

She moved the waterfall of her lab doors to leave, and while others might call it unorthodox, and stupid, she should say that at least it kept people out. It's not her fault that the people here were seemingly allergic to showers.

Their home's living area wasn’t grand but it was big, like it had to for all Father’s weirdly acquired kids and estranged family that have accumulated over the years. “Hi, Breezy” Her older sister Callie greeted her, next to her was Oopsy and his team of miss fits; Messy, Too Loud, and Me Bear. It wasn’t often that all of them got together so whatever this was had to be important.

“Okay, Ocean Breeze! I- have no idea why these other guys are here- but I wanted to talk to you about something.” Or the seriousness she preserved was just a coincidence and all of them were there for completely different reasons.

Oopsy stood up, angry. ”Oh no- we have been waiting way too long. We need that crystal and we need it now!”

“Right and like I said you are going to have to go through Bob for that one. I do not deal with weird magical artifacts, especially not glowing rocks.”

”-But He won’t give it to us!”

”Well, now then, that's just not my problem.”

Oopsy just groaned in frustration and left dragging his team with him who left with polite waves. Except for Too Loud being his name sake. “BY MR. OOPSY’S DAD- damb and I thought I was loud- bro you good.” And with them gone that just left Bluster with his 2 daughters. Well, his 2 non biological daughters. Sasha’s at school right now.

“Right… So Breeze, if you would just follow me-“ So he’s showing her something in the forecast center? “I was looking over the energy levels of the Bad Lands-“

”-Bluster Land.”

”…No.”

“…”

“… Anyway I have been monitoring the energy levels and there is a strange energy coming from those hills over in this region.” He pointed and hovered his hand over a map. “And I was wondering I you could check it out”

“Why can’t you check it out?” When it came to the energy of his land he was usually the first one to check it out, no matter the danger, but Bluster just looked away… embarrassed? Sad?

… Right, the infected area. The strange energy. Care Bear energy. “Okay, I'll check it out.” Her job was to help clean and purify, she would do just that.

”Thank you.”

The place Bluster pointed to honestly wasn’t that far, It wasn’t close enough to walk but it was a short drive along gravel roads. This was concerning, especially if this turned out to be another infected area. But how would that happen, those areas can only be made with an unstable Seeds of Caring and she would have known if Care-A-Lot somehow got past their borders.

She shook those thoughts behind her. This could be completely unrelated, something completely different, it could even be nothing at all.

Breeze was at the place marked on the map, nothing so far. She kept looking. The area was an open field in the hills,  only a few bushes and trees scattered about, not something that could hide that much. Even so it took a while before she finally found something, something glowing.

That's Care magic alright. She pushed the bushes hiding the glow to get a closer look at what she was dealing with and when she did she froze. In the bush lay 4 pristine little bears sleeping, Care Bears to be exact and- oh wait, she miss counted, there are 5 baby Care Bears sleeping and glowing in a bush and one of them happened to be green and blend into the bush.

She didn’t know much about these bears but she knew they were much too small and young to fend for themselves. One by one she brought them back to her car. The first was the green one, not wanting to lose track of it again, whose fur was much silkier than a normal bear with a peace sign belly badge with leaves surrounding it. Second was the red bear with extremely fluffy fur and white paws and a belly badge of a cloud giving a heart a hug, basic. She laughed a little at that, there were way too many bears with heart belly badges or heart based names.

Third was orange with purple markings around their eyes that looked like a mask and a rocket ship belly badge. Fourth was purple and sparkly with a belly badge symbol that looked like a chat bubble? And fifth was a very colorful rainbow bear that also had sparkles. And back to the belly badges with hearts, this time a heart in a rainbow heart. How original.

Wow she really needed to stop bullying children. Ocean Breeze placed the children in a pile in the passenger seat to keep an eye on them. She made sure to comfort the seat with a blanket kept in the trunk and also to drive slowly on her way back home.

They were still glowing faintly so they had to have been born relatively recently. Unlike the bears that live on earth most Care Bears are not born that natural way. Care Bears are made when there is a great amount of caring on earth, that caring then goes up into the clouds and then separates off of the clouds to make a Care Bear. That's how some bears can have nationalities, by being born from clouds of a certain country.

But for her, and these bears, she was made from hypocrisy. More specifically doing bad to spread a good message- or polluting the planet to tell people to protect the planet. Humans really were something.

But it was the bad and the good that made humans humans and although Care-A-Lot might want to change that she knew that humans had to be responsible for themselves, they had no right to meddle in their things let alone their children.

She parked the car. She didn’t want to leave them alone but carrying all of them in one trip would be more than she could fit in her arm. She spotted a basket sitting on the floor of the garage. Bingo.

She scooped the babies with the blanket underneath and set them all in the basket for easy carrying. It’s times like these that she appreciated being smart, or at least smarter than a bunch of sleeping babies- how have they been asleep this long?

As if on cue when she lifted the basket the red fuzzy bear started opening their eyes. Crap. The tiny bear was now boring their big round eyes straight into her soul- like all babies do. The baby reached their paws up which would roughly translate to, ‘give me uppies’ so she would oblige if only it meant not having a crying baby.

Immediately the cub wrapped their little arm around her neck. They didn’t get that far around cause they were just so small so she would have to hold her up. This was fine. One baby in her arms, four babies in the basket. As long as none of the others woke up it would be fine- ‘are you kidding me.’

Not even a few steps into the house and the green and orange bear had woken up. Luckily the green bear was content to stay in the basket, the orange one however- “ow-! Hey” was now currently climbing up her arm and face not even waiting for uppies. Their climb stopped as they perched on her head.

The other two were waking slightly but stayed in the basket as she finally made it to the living room where her father and sister were. The chatter the two were having was immediately paused the moment they laid eyes on her, or the 5 babies she was carrying, it was probably that. “So I found out where that strange energy was coming from.”

Bluster in all his wisdom, or lack thereof, covered his mouth in an attempt to cover up his laughter. “Pf- I see~”

And like their father Callie couldn’t help but find the situation amusing as well as she reached forward to pick up the ‘baby basket’. “Aw~ they're so cute- do you have any name ideas?”

“-I- Names!? Who said I had to name them”

The purple sparkly bear of a sister picked up the baby also of purple and sparkles, seemingly ignoring her bewilderment. “Well you did find them- like dad did you- so it seems fitting that you would be the one to have claim of that sort of thing.”

“Well that's not really how Care Bear naming really works though- it’s based of of the collective and what their badges mean and who they out as people- I can’t-“

Her panic subsided when a tiny little hand whacked at her face. Cal laughed and lifted the cub she was holding up to her. “They have badges and you probably know the most about Care Bear naming conventions out of every one here.” Breeze took the cub from Callie, “I’m sure you can think of something.”

“Yeah-“ their father spoke up. “Besides, you can’t be worse at naming things then Callie- cough cough Bluster Land-“

“Bluster Lands a Good Name- and I was Twelve!”

“Then why do we have to keep the name?”

“Cause it’s our history now you can’t change it.”

The two kept arguing in the background as she thought of names. Care Bear names. Stupid names. She looked at the bear she was holding and their- his?- badge that looked like a chat bubble. Friend is a common Care Bear name. How do idiots shorten friends in shity chat rooms- fren? ‘Hello Fren Bear’ she put the purple bear back in the basket.

She grabbed the fuzzy bear still clinging to her neck. They were all warm but they, or she as she looked closer, was the warmest and fuzziest. ‘Warm Fuzzies Bear’. She also set her back in the basket where Fuzzy immediately latched onto one of her siblings, at least she thinks they would qualify as siblings, it’s hard to tell with Care Bears.

Breeze reached for the cub on her head, and the one who smacked her earlier, and looked at- her. This little baby was filled with so much energy and determination it honestly kinda scared her. ‘I Can Bear’ fitting considering she was already kicking out of her arms. Into the basket with you.

She picked up the well behaved green boy out of the basket. She was on a roll and the little peace sign badge and the calm demeanor gave ‘self care’. ‘Self Care Bear’ it is. Then it was the rainbow bear's turn. Picking them up, no discernible gender she could tell, and she had nothing. Maybe she could do something like she did with Fren. She looked at the heart badge, ‘love’. ‘ILY Bear’ or Illy, illy? It’s hard to tell uppercase “I” and lower case “l” apart, especially when they're next to each other.

All of her newly acquired children were back in the baby basket. Things started to set in from there. These were her kids, and even now as she watched them cuddle up and play, something told her she would end up loving them till the day she died.
