“Is this a joke?”
“I wish,” Sam replied, feeling far away, feeling crushed that his confession hadn’t been followed by a passionate kiss, or at least a declaration that Dean had feelings for him as well. But no, Sam’s love was apparently unrequited.
“You,” Dean spoke slowly, “you’re really in love with me? Like, this isn’t a prank or something?”
Sam turned away and stared out the motel room window. A steady rain was pouring from the sky, but there was still enough sunshine to make the blades of grass glisten with rainwater.
“I knew I shouldn’t have told you,” Sam murmured, fighting back his tears.
He heard Dean step near to him, and then he felt Dean’s hand on his shoulder.
“Why did you tell me then?” Dean didn’t speak the words accusatorially; rather, his voice was gentle and encouraging. Sam felt a rush of hope. Hesitantly, he turned to face Dean. There was a long stretch of silence as Sam aimed to decode Dean’s face.
“I was hoping,” Sam finally said, “you know...”
“No, tell me.”
Sam drew in a deep breath and released it.
“I was hoping you’d feel the same, and that you’d say nothing else mattered but us being together.”
Dean gazed into Sam’s eyes. He took Sam’s hands into his own.
“Sammy,” he spoke softly, “I was just surprised. But the truth is, well, the truth is, you know…”
“No, tell me,” Sam said, echoing Dean’s earlier demand.
Reaching up, Dean took Sam’s face into his hands.
“Sammy,” he said in a decisive voice, “I’m in love with you too and nothing else matters but us being together.”
Sam made a sound of profound relief and Dean grinned widely. They rushed to share a tight embrace, and then a deep kiss that felt eternal.
