Chapter 1: Heeseung’s B-Side

Chapter Text

A popular audition show first brought these five men together. Now they’re on the rise to stardom. The group’s name is ENHYPEN.

“What’s that? You missed me?” a pink-haired member asked. The crowd goes wild, everyone chanting the member’s name.

“Alright, I’ll embrace you with my voice. Are you ready, my ACEs?”

“AHHHH Heeseung, you’re so handsome! That close-up shot was fatal. I feel like my life span just extended! Heeseung is god!”  Hand tightly gripping his uchiwa tightly, designed with his favorite member’s face on it. The boy was glued to his seat right in front of the TV.

The name of this fanatic is Kim Sunoo, a 19-year-old college student who lives and breathes for the popular idol group Enhypen and their center Lee Heeseung.

“Hype-n again? You must really like this group, Sunoo.” His dad said

His mother chuckles. “It’s Enhypen, dear. Let him go on, it’s really fun to see him excited over something.” She chides, making her husband laugh. ”I really like the Heeseung guy too”. She adds.

His family finds his fanboying rather amusing to see.

“Honestly, I don’t get it; it’s much better to put all this time into studying.” His sister says, exiting the room.

His idol obsession is Lee Heeseung, who is excessively handsome and seductive. He’s Enhypen’s wild and sexy heartthrob. His amazing and sharp performances put professional dancers to shame and ignite some very hot fantasies among his fans.

“What is your goal for this survival show program?”

“I want to make the people all over the world smile!” A fresh-faced Heeseung says enthusiastically.

“Ah, he was so cute on the survival show two years ago… Can’t believe he’s such a good performer now.” Sunoo thought, holding his cheek from how cute the clip was.

His phone makes a small ding. He looks at the notification and jumps. It was almost time for the concert ticket selling to start. He closes the video tab and opens one browser window and another one in incognito. He quickly types in the website’s URL, and a timer pops up, counting down the minute the ticket selling starts.

He holds his breath, hand gripping his mouse tightly. The clock strikes zero. The page shows him that he’s 1022 in line, which made him anxious. He bites his thumb, trying to calm his nerves. The number goes from 1022 to 996 to 659 to 32, and finally, the page loads. He quickly starts pressing boxes to see if the seat is available. Once he finally finds a seat, he speedily checks out.

Once he paid for the ticket, he let out a sigh of relief. His phone chimes once again, he checks his email, and there he sees his e-ticket. He starts jumping up and down, yelling with joy. “Heeseung, I’m going to see you soon!” He said, giggling.

“Sunoo, keep it down!!” His sister shouts, but he doesn't care; nothing will rain on his parade.

“Sorry to call you on your day off, Sunoo.” His boss said. Sunoo gives her a small smile. “Don’t worry, Youngsoon-ssi.” He said. “Minyoung-nim is in the hospital for appendicitis, and we had no one else to cover for her.” She adds. He nods, “I’ll do my best to fill her shoes!”  “I needed the extra money for the concert goods anyway.” He thought, skipping to where his assignment was.

Sunoo started this job as a small way to earn more money to support his bias. He found his job quite enjoyable and the benefits rather good. He can now do his duties with his eyes closed now.

“Hmmm, Lee Heeseung?” He reads off the clientele sheet.

“What if it’s actually him?” He thinks, his mind going towards some outlandish places.

“You better keep this a secret, babe.” The imaginary Heeseung said in his head, making him blush.

He shakes his head. “Like that would ever happen.”

He enters the building's access code and rides the elevator to the third floor. He knocks on the door. “Heeseung-ssi, I’m coming in.” He said before unlocking the door with the key he was given from the agency.

Sunoo walks into the apartment. Walking through the entryway, he entered the living room, but the client was not there. He then notices the bedroom door is open. He opens the door to spot a man sitting in the corner of the room, eyes shifting around, eyebags so pronounced. He was dressed in a black hoodie with the same-colored pants and emanated a gloomy aura.

The boy blinks once, twice, and thrice.

No way…”

“Um, Heeseung-ssi, I will be borrowing your vacuum cleaner.”

The hoodie-clad man lets out a small “Okay.”

“He may be deathly pale, but after burning the same image into my retinas… Those features… I can never be mistaken, it’s actually Lee Heeseung!” He shouts internally.

Imagine going to work to earn money to spend on your bias to actually work for your bias…

“It’s like he’s a different person. He’s rather timid on his off time.”

“Well, I’ll be starting now.” He said, closing the door.

“I almost started freaking out.”

He stands still. “I guess even celebrities have their shy moments…”  He was about to start working before he realized he didn’t know where the cleaning supplies were.

Sunoo knocks on the door before entering again. “Heeseung-ssi, where are you-”

He sees the man crouching down on the floor, murmuring.

“No one told me the housekeeper was going to be this young. I can’t switch to idol mode at home. What should I do? He probably thought I’m some type of gloomy loser who deserves to die.”

Sunoo makes a confused face. “I didn’t even think of that.”

“I’ll be exposed on the net, haters will jump on me, and it will be on the news! I’ll be an international laughing stock, and I’ll be branded as a traitor! Then I’ll be stabbed in the street and die of blood loss.”

The boy closes the door, leaving him to grovel some more.

-❤️💙💚💜💛-

Sunoo starts to vacuum the living room, deep in thought. “Was that the same Heeseung who captivates the crowd with just one wink?”

He stops vacuuming and starts to wipe the tables down.

“He’s probably nervous for their concert at the KSPO that’s right around the corner…” Then his mind starts to think the worst.

“What if he ends up quitting due to anxiety?!”

“Sorry, everyone, I have to retire. I can’t handle this life anymore.” The imaginary Heeseung in his head said. “I’d die!”

He grips the rag in his hand hard. “That must be avoided at all costs!”

From the corner of his eyes, he saw Heeseung exit his bedroom. He lets out a small sigh before turning around to share his thoughts about the idol.

“Uh, Heeseung-ssi, I know it’s inappropriate to say this while I’m working, but I am a big fan of yours since you were on the audition show. I’m truly glad that you debuted and became a singer.” He said with his heart.

The silence was deafening, making Sunoo let out small sweat drops. Did he overstep his boundaries?

“I’m sorry…”

“Huh?”

“I’m so sorry that I’m a lying scumbag. You must be shocked that your bias’s real self must have shattered your view of me. I tricked a fan… I’m lower than industrial waste… I'm trash .”

“No, you didn’t trick me!”

“I really don’t deserve any fans at all.”

He thought of all his co-fans who loved the idol so much. He has to become the voice for all of them.

Sunoo felt a vein pop.

“Are you mocking a fan’s love?”

A Heeseung uchiwa appears in the grasp of Sunoo's hand, surprising the idol.

“Heeseung makes this world feel like a paradise! He’s the most hunky musical genius that ever lived! He’s our god! These facts are indisputable, even if you’re having a nervous breakdown.”

A fire lights in Sunoo’s eyes. He cornered Heeseung, making him fall onto his butt.

“Heeseung is god! He’s an apostle of love sent to cleanse the earth. And he’s also an angel! The holy trinity!! Repeat after me!”

“Heeseung is god. Wait, what the heck!”

Sunoo stands tall and proud.

“I will let no anti-fan test me, even if the hater was my idol.”

“Your gap between your professional side and your fan side is even bigger than mine.” Heeseung quietly said.

Sunoo continues his job while Heeseung plays around with his uchiwa. “I’m surprised someone as timid as you has this wild stage persona, you know.” Heeseung nods. “The producer thought of that.” The boy clenches his fist. “Thank you pd-nim!”

“So why did you accept that role?”

Heeseung makes an awkward smile. “There‘s someone that I really admire…” He starts.

“Its kinda outrageous for me to think of this, so much I could die.. But I want to make everyone in the world smile just like he did…”

Sunoo thinks back to his idol’s audition days. His eyes start sparkling. “He’s really the same Heeseung through and through.”

Hesseung pulls the strings of his hoodie tightly. “But someone like me can’t make anyone smile.”

Sunoo shakes his head. “You’re no fake, you’re the real Heeseung.”

The idol unhides his face; he almost let out a smile, but stopped and covered his eyes once again.

“When you get this popular, a lot of people would say things they don't mean. I can’t even trust what my own fans say at all. Even if I wanted to.”

He lets out a small sniffle.

“I feel so pathetic thinking that. And I trust myself the least, too.”

He grabs a small book about island living.

“Maybe I should just be a hermit living on a deserted island away from civilization, or maybe deep in a jungle where no one can find me.”

“Saying all that after you told me your dream?!”

Sunoo reaches out to his idol. “Even if you can’t trust anyone, I’ll still be supporting you until you can!” He pats his idol’s shoulder. “That goes for Heeseung and Gloomyseung-ssi!” He says enthusiastically.

“Gloomsyseung-ssi?” Heeseung repeated and felt a small mushroom grow from his shoulder.

He puffs his chest and places a fist over his heart. “I won’t slack off as your housekeeper, too!”

“How do you get to the Strait of Magellan?"

“Gloomyseung-ssi”

“I won’t let him quit!”

-❤️💙💚💜💛-

Sunoo enters Heeseung’s apartment, hands full of groceries. “Gloomyseung-ssi, I’ll be cooking your meals going forward.”

Heeseung was sitting in the corner of his living room, hands hugging his knees. “You didn’t expose me… Right,” He asks, sweat covering his whole face. Sunoo sighs and shakes his head. “No, I didn’t, and I will never.”

He goes to his kitchen, now wearing a face mask and gloves. He starts cooking a small meal for his idol. “I was shocked to see how empty your fridge was and what you threw away in the trash, all those empty cups of ramyeon and ready-to-eat cartons… Are you sure you’re eating properly?”

“Sorry for spending money so stupidly… Sorry, for being trash, making trash.”

Sunoo sighs. “That’s not my point.”

“What shocked me is how you have so much energy performing with a diet like that.”

Heeseung murmurs something Sunoo couldn’t make out. Something about him immediately passing out from schedules he thinks.

Sunoo stops mixing the chicken around and places it in an air fryer. “Meals can affect someone's mental health in a big way.”  He thought to himself. The air fryer dings, alerting him. He opens the door and takes out the food. “Behold! Healthy air fryer chicken!”

He goes to where Heeseung was sitting, holding a piping hot chicken piece before him. “Here, try some.” The idol shakes his head. “I can’t accept food from fans.” “Don’t worry, I wore a mask and gloves; this is just the same as something store-bought.”

“What if it’s poisoned?!” It was a thought that passed through Heeseung’s mind

Sunoo felt another vein pop. What was his idol thinking?

The boy makes an angry smile. “We can’t let Heeseung go hungry, right?” He said threateningly, making Heeseung jump and grab the piece of chicken, which he gulped down.

In a flash, Heeseung suddenly switched to his idol mode, surprising Sunoo, making him fall on his butt. “He-Heeseung?!” Heeseung crawls closer to him, “Holy crap, how did you know my type?” He said charismatically. Sunoo starts to malfunction. “Can I eat this all up?” he said, licking his lips. Instantaneously, Sunoo combusts from his actions.

“Here lies Kim Sunoo, age 19. Cause of death: Heeseung was too erotic.”

Heeseung grows a mushroom on top of his head, snapping out of his idol mode.

“Woah that startled me…”

“I should be saying that!”

“You should have told me you could switch that fast!” He said, “I almost went to heaven because of that.”

The idol covers his face with his hands. “I’ve been so busy lately that my switch is going on the fritz. Ah, my face muscles hurt so much.” He said, his face now meeting the floor.

“How much work does he put into meeting his fans’ expectations? Yet he still pulls it off so flawlessly…”

-❤️💙💚💜💛-

Sunoo watches the tv screen while folding Heeseung’s laundry. The show on was a Variety show where Enhypen was guesting in.

“Heeseung!”

The idol nods.

“You seem to be beaming with energy these days! It’s like your pheromones are going crazy! What’s the secret?”

Heeseung ponders for a moment.

“I recently ate some tuna spring rolls. Those were so good.”

“Ah, I did that.”

“Eating good food just gives me a boost of energy!” He says enthusiastically.

Sunoo looks delighted. He looks towards Heeseung and smiles, the idol covering his face, trying to hide his blush.

After he finished his chores, he started getting ready to leave. “Well, Gloomyseung-ssi, I’ll be going now.” He says as he starts to put his shoes on. “Um, Sunoo-ssi?”

Sunoo looks up, letting out a small hum signalling that he was listening.

“I think I can do the concert now. Thank you for all the help.” The sentence made Sunoo break out into a small smile.

“Because of you, I feel my spirit was lifted. Like I leveled up from excerment to household trash.”

Sunoo’s veins popped again.

“Who are you calling trash?”

Heeseung flinches. “Heeseung is a national treasure!” He said hurriedly.

“I didn’t do anything to deserve this praise; I just did my job as a housekeeper. Of course, I would do it properly.”

Heeseung shakes his head.

“That’s not true…” He starts, making Sunoo surprised.

“Being an idol is also a job, but the fans praise us anyway… And now that praise makes me a little happy.” He said, scratching his nose.

A small tear forms in the corner of Sunoo’s eyes

“Did I say the wrong thing?” He panics. “Sorry, I’ll go inside the trash bin now.”

Sunoo grabs the idol’s shoulder, “Stop! Don’t throw Heeseung away!”

He lets go of his shoulder and places one behind his head, lightly scratching it.

“Hearing Gloomyseung say that rather than Heeseung made me choke up a little.” He said, a small chuckle coming out of his mouth, wiping the tear away.

Heeseung makes a small smile.

“Thank you for setting me straight, Sunoo-ssi.”

A sudden arrow shot into Sunoo’s heart, “What was this feeling?” He felt small hearts form in his eyes, hands on his cheeks, flushed red from the action.

The idol pulls the strings of his hoodie once again. “Sorry, I must look stupid right now.”

Sunoo grabs his arms, trying to stop him from covering his face. “Don’t hide it. It was so cute.”

“No, I must look creepy!!”

“That smile was so…”

They tumbled onto the floor, him now on top of Heeseung.

“So Cute!”

The door suddenly opens,

“Heeseung, about tomorrow’s sche-”

He looks up to see Sunoo right on top of the idol.

“What are you doing!”

The two of them were now kneeling on the floor, looking apologetic towards the manager.

“Honestly, if you’re really a fan, you should know your boundaries!”

Sunoo shivers. “I’m so sorry…”

He then points towards Heeseung. “And you! Get it together! Even one small fraction of your stage persona would do.

“I’m so sorry, Manager Jay-nim!”

Right after he was let go, Sunoo ran and ran away from the apartment building.

“What’s this feeling?”

He starts to breathe heavily from running fast.

“I’m a Heeseung fan, not a Gloomyseung fan…”

His brain was filled with thoughts of Gloomyseug.

“Oh, this isn’t good…”

-❤️💙💚💜💛-

“A crazed fan entered an idol’s home yesterday, that’s insane.”

“That’s the problem with those people. Saying this was all for the love of the idol. They’re the worst!”

Sunoo makes a forced smile. “Yeah, they’re insane,” He adds.

One of his friends now held their hands together like they were praying.

“Seeing them rise in popularity far out of anyone’s reach, shining as bright as they can. Making you think, “Oh, look at how far they’ve come!” That’s the epitome of being a fan!”  They said confidently.

“Yeah, you’re right,” he replies dryly.

His other friend nods in agreement.

“Honestly, a commoner intruding on an idol’s space? Thats insane,” his other friend adds

“Yeah, they should kneel over and die,” he said flatly.

“They may be right…”

“Anyways,” His friend starts, pulling out a magazine from their bag. “Have you guys seen Heeseung in this fashion magazine?”

His other friend let out a small “Oh my gosh!”. They held their cheek in happiness

“That small sliver of skin is so tastefully done its crazy!”

“Thank you for being born, Heeseung!” They both said at the same time.

“Oh, Heeseung… Heeseung, who’s like a zombie when he’s at home…”

Sunoo shakes his head from that thought.

“I can’t get that side of him out of my head. What if I lose control and attack him again?!”

A small knock, followed by “Housekeeping services,” was the noise Heeseung heard from his front door. He walks toward the entryway, “Sunoo-ssi…” He muttered, but to his surprised to see his old housekeeper, Minyoung.

“It’s been a while, Heeseung-nim! I’ve been discharged from the hospital, so I’ll be returning as your housekeeper starting today.” His face made a small frown, which was caught by Minyoung. She lets out a hearty laugh. “You must prefer the young man instead of me? Oh, good grief!”

He pulls the top of his hoodie down, unsure of how to reply to the older lady’s banter.

“My grandchild can’t stop talking about this Enhypen group, it’s cute. Do you know that group Heeseung-nim? Is it some kind of fad?”

“Now that Minyoung-ssi is back from the hospital, I can go back to being another faceless, distant fan.”

-❤️💙💚💜💛-

The crowd starts to cheer. The idols emerge from below the stage. The spotlight shines onto the members, making the crowd go wild. “Hello everyone! It’s the missionary of love and positivity! The sexy and wild member, it’s me, Heeseung!” he said with vigor.

A dark-haired boy stepped into the spotlight next. “Please rely on me more. It’s the ice prince of the group, Sunghoon.” He said rather regally. “Hi Hi!” an energetic boy said. “It’s your enthusiastic and cute puppy, Jake!” The blond one said, forming a heart with his hands.

A rather cool and reliable boy takes the stage. “Hello, it’s your leader, Jungwon!” He said, giving the crowd a small wave. “And lastly…”

The tall, stoic, dark purple-headed man clears his voice. “It’s Riki,” he said cooly.

“Now let’s have a fun concert!”

They performed their hardest, dancing with all they had. The crowd goes wild. The whole concert hall was shaking from how much fun everyone was having.

“You guys want me? Then I’ll embrace you with all I've got! Heeseung said in a flirty tone.

All the Heeseung-biased fans swooned.

“Heeseung’s live singing is sooo good!”

“I can’t handle this!!”

“I would cheat on my non-existent boyfriend for him!!” one delusional fan said.

“I love him so much!!”

“Ah, he can switch back and forth so easily.”

And finally, they reached the final song. The members start to ride the carts that would circle the entire venue. They all gave the crowd fan service. They blew flying kisses, different kinds of hearts, and caught whatever the crowd threw at them.

“They’re like stars. The fans are like rings that circle them. Nothing more than countless indistinguishable particles.”

He lets out a big smile.

“We must never come in contact with them.”

He inhales a huge amount of air.

“Heeseung! You're so cool!” He shouts with all his might, hands tightening on the sign he was holding.

“Goodbye, Gloomyseung-ssi”

Heeseung looks up into the crowd, spotting Sunoo wiping his tears away.

“Wow, that concert was so good!” His friend comments, making Sunoo nod in agreement. “I need to go to the restroom.” His friend waves, “I’ll wait for you here.”

“Ah, I feel like an emotional wreck….” He thought.

A hand suddenly grabs him from the hallway.

The door suddenly closes behind him. He looks up to see who just pulled him. To his surprise, it was his idol.

“He-Heeseung-ssi?” What are you doing here?” He thought he was with his members, getting ready for their post-concert live.

“I saw you in the crowd.”

Sunoos eye’s widen. “He spotted me in the sea of fans?” The thought made him flustered.

“How exactly good is your eyesight?!”

“Three times better than 20/20.”

“Wow, not only is he a uber talented idol, he has superhuman vision too!”

Heeseung wipes a small tear forming in the corner of Sunoo’s eyes.

“I want to make everyone smile, but here you are, crying.”

Sunoo blushes harder. “Does it have to do with how you stopped showing up without a word?

He panics.

“A-any fan would want to know all things about you… Including me!” He starts. Heeseung comes closer to hear him properly

“I simply can’t hog you all to myself!”

“Heeseung’s dream is the most important after all.”

The idol lets out a sigh.

“I’ll decide if you’re a problem.” He grabs Sunoo’s shoulders. “Don’t say stuff like that.” He places his head on his shoulder.

“Please support me by being by my side.”

Sunoo goes bright red.

“I’m hopeless without you.”

“Oh no… I can’t say no to him…”

“O-Okay… I’ll stay by your side.” He stutters out

“To all aces.. One sorry can’t be enough for this.”

Heeseung suddenly puts his hands on his face. “Ugh, my face… My face hurts so much.”

“There it is! The sudden switch!”

“Hey, it’s not the time to switch off! You have a livestream to do!” Sunoo shouts as Heeseung runs away from him.

Sunoo exhales, his mouth forming a tired smile

“From this point onward, I will be living as a bad fan.”
