"No one in the thousands of li I have walked has ever surpassed you in terms of beauty." Praised Du Fu, sitting next to Han Yu under the fragrant blossoms of the pear tree.
"Such flattery shouldn't be bestowed upon someone like me, I am just a steamed bun maker..." Was Han Yu's embarrassed reply, averting his reddening face away from the other man's smiling one, who had now started laughing merrily, the tips of his ears as red as Han Yu's cheeks.
Du Fu's joyful laughter joined the music of the magpies' singing, serenading the world in one of the loveliest sounds Han Yu could have ever imagined; his heart fluttered in his chest like soaring magpies, flitting around inside him with wings of its own.
Han Yu did not register when Du Fu had gently cupped his face with his hands, both soft and weathered by a multitude of travels and poetry, turning Han Yu's blushing head to face him.
Then the world seemed to stop, time itself holding its breath, because Han Yu was being kissed.
Kissed by the handsome, breath-taking, smart, clever, and a thousand more illustrious qualities, Du Fu, master of poetry.
Even though Han Yu had already been kissed by Du Fu a few times before, each time it still felt like the first.
Warmth rushed throughout his entire body, the world fading into a hum of love and compassion as all melted into just the feeling of Du Fu; his mouth, his tongue, the heat radiating off of him, and surrounding Han Yu with a sense of safety and comfort.
His eyes closed against the sensation, chasing it, as he became a part of this magnificent and amazing poet, entwining until they were one.
Until finally they remembered that they were but humans, in need of breath to live, and they parted, beaming smiles adorning their flushed faces.
"You are not 'just a steamed bun maker,' you are the best of all steamed bun makers in the entire world! You have traveled thousands of li for your loved ones, and have seen and done things people can only dream of doing!" Breathed Du Fu, ears red, and eyes twinkling with a glow akin to that of the sun.
They gazed at each other for what felt like an eternity, not uttering a single word, just simply basking in the other's love, not needing words to describe it, their eyes full of complete fondness and a passion poets could only wish to write of.
"And you walked alongside me." Han Yu whispered softly like magpie feathers and filled with love and adoration.
"But not all the time." Protested Du Fu, playfully nudging him with a grin.
"Yet you still did what you could. Following me for so long." A laugh bubbled from his lips as he leaned into Du Fu's touch.
"And I will continue to do so, until the end of time." Replied the smiling poet.
That promise was sealed with another kiss. Smiles, wide and genuine, shone like the full moon on a clear night on their faces.
For they were content.
