Work Text:
The city was crumbling around them, and she had to do something to help them. The streets were flooded with villains and terrors and--- This was what she’d signed up for. When she’d started attending UA, she knew exactly what she was getting herself into.
Ochako Uraraka wanted nothing more than to be a hero, and she was going to do it. Doing it meant facing situations like this.
But it also meant situations that she couldn’t fix either.
She moved as fast as she could, she almost --- She almost made it. But the pieces of debris fell and skewered the child laying on the ground. She choked out a shocked and broken noise, as she knelt beside that child.
A child.
This ridiculous war… had probably cost the life of a child. How many other children would die before it was over?
“It hurts---” The little girl breathlessly whined.
She was visibly struggling to breathe. Ochako needed to get this child to medical help. Now.
“It’s okay, it’ll be okay soon. I’m going to get you to someone who can help you.”
She lifted the child, careful not to jostle the piece of metal that was embedded into her skin.
“I want my mommy---”
“I know, I know. I’ll find your mommy as soon as I get you help, so that you’ll still be here to see her.”
She made literal leaps and bounds with that child in her arms. She cast her gaze downward and found the girl struggling to keep her eyes open.
“No--- Hey… Hey no--- Don’t close your eyes. Please. You have to stay… For your mommy.”
The girl had gone unresponsive in her arms. Eyes wide and scared--- Lifeless.
Ochako choked on the sob that caught in her throat.
She’d failed. She was in a race against time, and she’d lost. Was this what their lives would look like from now on? Was this… The dark side of being a hero? How often would failures like these come, and ruin her?
“I’m so sorry---"
