Work Text:

The candle beside Riddle Rosehearts’ desk burns low, wax pooling quietly at its base.

Heartslabyul is asleep. The hedges outside stand trimmed and immaculate, every thorn placed exactly where it belongs. The silence is orderly. Predictable.
Perfect.

Riddle sits straight-backed in his chair, gloved hands resting atop an open rulebook. Its pages are worn from use, the ink familiar down to the smallest margin note. Once, every word within felt sacred. Absolute.
He knows each rule by heart.

He remembers reciting them without hesitation, enforcing them without doubt. He remembers believing truly believing that rules were justice. That if everyone followed them, no one would suffer.

That if he followed them perfectly, everything would be fine.
His fingers tighten just slightly.
The truth did not arrive all at once. It came in fragments quiet realizations in the aftermath of shattered roses and spoken apologies. In the way the world did not end when the rules failed. In the way people remained, imperfect and breathing, even after order collapsed.
Rules did not protect them.
Rules did not protect him.
They were never immutable truths. They were decisions. Written by someone. Enforced by someone else.

Riddle exhales slowly.
His mother’s voice lingers in his memory, calm and unwavering.
There is a correct way to live.
Deviation leads to failure.
He had accepted that without question. Had molded himself into something flawless and fragile, sharp enough to wound without intending to.

The page beneath his fingertips rustles as he turns it.
A familiar rule greets him one he once upheld without mercy. Now, it feels smaller. Not wrong. Simply… incomplete.
Rules are tools, he realizes. Frameworks meant to guide, not suffocate. When they begin to harm rather than help, they lose
their purpose.

And something without purpose can be changed.
Riddle closes the book.
Not in anger.
Not in rebellion.
With intention.
He stands, adjusts his gloves, smooths his collar, and faces his reflection. He looks the same as ever composed, elegant, controlled.
But his eyes no longer search for approval.

Tomorrow, he will still enforce rules. He will still demand order. But it will be a living order one that breathes, one that allows mistakes, one that values people over perfection.
Let them test him.
Let them wonder where the line lies now.
Riddle Rosehearts does not break rules.
He understands them.
And understanding, he has learned, is the truest form of authority.
