Ilya had driven the two hours from Ottawa to Montreal to visit Shane.
He had left after the home game and got straight in his car so the first thing he did when he got to Shane’s house was jump in the shower.
Shane had wanted to join him but Ilya had refused. Shane thought it was weird. Ilya was always up for “saving water” but he thought maybe Ilya was just feeling uncomfortable.
He lay on the bed waiting for Ilya to come back from the shower.
A few minutes later his boyfriend emerged, towel around his waist.
“Boooo!”, Shane hollered.
Ilya looked around, confused.
“Show me the goods! Show me the goods!”, Shane started chanting.
Ilya smiled and dropped the towel.
“Now we’re talking”, Shane rubbed his hands together.
Silence as Ilya started his skincare routine and Shane took in the sight of his man.
“Wait!”, Shane said suddenly, “what’s that on your hip?”
Ilya froze and reddened. He grasped for the towel but Shane was quicker.
He bent over and peered at Ilya’s hip.
It was a small tattoo.

Shane’s jersey number.
Shane stood straight and looked at Ilya in wonder.
“Did you….”
“I got it a few days ago. It was meant to be a surprise for your birthday tomorrow. I was going to wait until you “discovered” it tonight. That’s why I said no to you joining me in the shower. But then you were being cute and now I’ve ruined the surprise!”
Shane leaned in and kissed him.
“You haven’t ruined anything! That’s so sweet Ilya! Thank you! I love you!”
They made out for another minute.
“You like it?”, Ilya asked nervously.
“I love it! You’re branded as mine!”
“I’ve always been yours Shane”, Ilya said seriously.
They kissed again.
Later that night, Ilya was kissing down Shane’s body.
He got to the waistband of Shane’s trousers and lowered them.
He gasped.
A tiny 81 in the exact same spot as his 24.
He looked up at Shane.
“Oh my god!”
“Birthday present to myself”, Shane said simply.
“Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”, Ilya asked.
“I wanted the surprise!”.
“Mission accomplished”, Ilya said reverently as he kissed the tattoo.
