Yuka had assumed that the hardest part about trying to get pregnant would be refraining from telling her friends and family until a certain date What she had not expected to be hard was the long wait for a positive pregnancy test.
Yuka, like most girls her age trying to get pregnant for the first time, had assumed that trying would be easy and the hard stuff would come after. Her polycule had been doing it like bunnies daily and nightly and had even faced their share of pregnancy scares in the past. Angelyne, their resident physician, had said that ‘that would just be the way’, people who were trying to get pregnantc rarely ever did so on their first try while couples who had no desire for children seemed to conceive through spite.
Ever the optimist, Yuka simply assumed that this logic could not apply to her. She refused any fertility treatment despite Angelyne’s insistence. It could not be that hard to just have unprotected sex until something happened. It was the easy and most inexpensive option, plus she would be taking it raw from both partners for a while. that could never have bothered her.
But sitting on the toilet seat (while Spec and Dior sat in the tub, of course. The only thing these people didn’t do together was... well, Yuka actually couldn’t think of anything her polycule didn’t do together.) and staring at the box of pregnancy tests on the counter was a significant bother. She bounced her knee, staring at the wall while she considered the negatives. This hadn’t been her first test, and it wouldn’t be her last. Previously all negatives, but she had hope this time around. She had waited until she experienced symptoms, then she would be able to have hope and deniability. The symptoms were undeniable: missed period, tenderness, heightened state of emotion and her bouts of nausea. But what if they could be explained away? What if it was just the stress getting to her? She wasn’t sure if she could handle another negative test after getting her hopes so high.
Spec was the first to pick up on it.
“Yuka take test,” he urged, gentler than his words should have been. He put a hand on her trembling leg and smoothed the skin down gently. “Only way to find out.”
If it had been anyone else, Yuka might have gotten upset and hidden her face. But Spectre had this unique power over her somehow. When he smiled, her world stood still.
She chewed her lip for a moment, blinked up at the skylight, then looked back down at Spec. Her hand cupped his cheek gently. “I’m just so scared.” She admitted, her voice smoother and sweeter than caramel sea. “I want this so badly—you know that.” She pulled away and stood up, pacing the small length of their bathroom.
Spec glanced behind himself at Dior. Dior liked to play cool in times of stress, but even Spec could tell that Yuka’s turmoil was affecting him. Dior normally would have been smoking a cigarette and staring at the wall, but he had seemingly opted out of the former. Spectre gestured to Dior’s empty fingers and waited for the response with a slight smirk.
“I just forgot.” Dior shrugged, pushing his free hand into his curls.
“Spectre call bullshit,” he grinned, rubbing his partner’s thigh. “Dior will not smoke around pregnant woman.”
Dior gave a little grin of his own, but didn’t entertain the comment any further.
Dior put his chin on Spec’s shoulder, mumbling against his ear. “This is the most scared I’ve ever seen her.” It was a little startling, actually. Yuka was normally the walking embodiment of sunshine: a California girl (in essence) who walked around topless and usually only wore a sarong as bottoms. Right now? She was wearing one of Spectre’s shirts and still pacing the length of the room.
“Spec knows. And that’s saying something, because Spec ate Yuka’s husband.” Dior blinked at that, but said no more. He reached over his boyfriend and pulled the shower curtain over the two of them.
“I got an idea.” He said, a lot quieter than before. “We should help settle her nerves, you know? Make her laugh.”
Spec nodded. He did love to hear Yuka laugh, even if he hated seeing her disappointment. “Yuka been let down so many times.” He shook his head solemnly for only a moment. Yuka’s light dimming at every negative test had brought everyone down. He couldn’t see it again. “What Dior have in mind?”
Dior peered out of the shower curtain. Yuka was still pacing, but she seemed to be slowing down a little bit. They wouldn’t have much longer.
“There are three tests in the box, right? We can both take one each with her. If hers turns out to be negative—“, he stopped talking for a second to mutter a prayer with his eyes squeezed shut, “—she won’t feel alone. She’s got weird humor like that, you know.”
Spec weighed the options for a minute. It didn’t make complete sense to him. But he glanced over his shoulder at his pacing girlfriend. Even if he didn’t completely understand it, his sweet girl deserved to laugh.
“Alright,” Spec agreed. “We do it.”

So the sticks got peed on.
Two minutes felt like an eternity for all of them, but Yuka especially. None of them were sure that she could keep doing this indefinitely. Every negative test was chipping away at her store of joy.
Three of them sat flipped upside down on the sink. They’d been swapped around a few times by Dior (who seemed to be the most okay with touching urine) so that they wouldn’t immediately know whose test she’d picked up.
The egg timer went off and she flinched. Yuka wanted to stay in limbo, knowing nothing and therefore being unable to find any disappointment. But her boys had agreed to do this with her and she wasn’t going to upset them, too.
She leaned over the sink and flipped one of the tests over.
“Positive.” She declared, her voice softer than air. Spectre wrapped his arms around her middle and put his nose in the crook of her neck. Dior pulled the two of them close and kissed the top of her head.
“Thank God.” She sobbed, pressing her face into her partners. One more negative test could have killed her.
They all stood like that for a while, bathing in this new glow. It was probably the happiest they had ever seen each other in the last few months, if not ever. But eventually they did have to pull away.
As Yuka wiped her tears—avoiding Spectre who was desperately trying to lick them away from her face—Dior walked over to the sink and flipped over one of the other tests. The positive one had to have been Yuka’s, meaning that the two remaining were negative and belonged to him and Spec. He was going to pick it up and make a small show about how they could ‘keep trying’ … when he noticed something.
That test wasn’t negative.
Confused, he flipped the other test over. Positive. Both positive. All three… positive? How could that be possible?
He glanced down at his stomach, poking it gently. He didn’t know what he expected to happen, but nothing did. Could he actually…? He shook his head, looking down at the two tests again. Still unmistakably positive.
Yuka glanced up in his direction and frowned. He seemed really upset, which did not bode well for her.
“Di? Baby? Talk to me, what’s going on?” She moved closer and touched his arm gently before following his line of sight. Her eyes fell on the two positive tests and she froze.
“Are you? Is he—“ she glanced over her shoulder at a very confused Spectre. “What everybody talking about?” He cocked his head to the side and then pushed between Yuka and Dior, at last making eye contact with the tests.
“Yuka,” Dior licked his lips nervously and swallowed. “Is this a prank? Did you… I don’t know. Are these gag tests? Did you pee on two other tests and swap them out?” Anything made more sense than Dior and Spectre both being pregnant.
“No, I wouldn’t do that at all.” She replied, her voice soft with hurt. Dior regretted what he’d said immediately. His hands reached out and slid across her stomach, and when he leaned in he gave her a soft kiss.
“M’sorry, baby. I didn’t mean to get mad.” He really hadn’t, but he was still confused. He pulled away again and looked at Spec.
“You didn’t pull a trick, did you? Cause it isn’t funny.” His voice wasn’t angry or desperate anymore. He just wanted an answer. Spec shook his head nervously.
“There’s gotta be some logical explanation,” he grunted, his hand reaching out to touch Spectre’s stomach under his shirt. He poked a thumb into the skin gently before the two of them shared a startled expression.
“What?” Yuka asked, her voice tight with fear. “What’s wrong?”
Dior watched his boyfriend’s stomach again before looking into Yuka’s eyes.
“There was a kick.” Goddamn it.
Spectre was pregnant, and that meant Dior was too. And, evidently, Spec was kind of far along.
“This is real. This is happening.” Dior muttered to himself, putting a hand on his own stomach. His didn’t feel any rounder, but there was a softness to it that he hadn’t noticed before.
Yuka watched the scene with something akin to wonder.
“Don’t … don’t be so scared of it, guys. This is amazing. We wanted a big family!”
She took their hands and pulled them closer to her, all of their fronts touching now. She dropped their hands and slid hers up their backs, rubbing for comfort. “We’re just… really getting ahead of it.”
She didn’t acknowledge the fact that their pregnancies should have been impossible, because that didn’t matter to her. Her boys were happy, they were safe, and they were loved. And now they were helping her achieve her dream of a big family as soon as possible. What more could any of them have wanted?
Dior took a breath and calmed down only slightly. Even if it wasn’t what he had been expecting, he couldn’t deny that he was more than a little happy to be starting their family. Spectre’s expression of fear had long been forgotten and traded in for a wagging tail. The fear would last for a minute, but their joy would be forever.
Dior took a breath. “I guess we don’t have to keep pushing it off.” He concurred with a small quirk of his lip. They all pulled in for a hug, being mindful now of their pregnancies. Just three people who loved each other and wanted to have babies with each other. What was scary about that?
The long wait was over at last.
