Chapter Text
His name was Douglas, but everyone called him Dug, and from the time he was a kid he always spelled it D-U-G. He spelled it that way because he felt that's the way people said it. And no teacher or other adult had ever really corrected him. They didn't care.
He felt maybe that's where his trouble with women had began.
He was a stranger in town. He had just left the city where his old lady lived; she had thrown out after a fight that might have been his fault. Now it was time to get away for awhile, until everything calmed down. He had gotten a trailer at the Cove and a job at the factory in town. First payday he went and tried a Friday night at the Kicking Mule bar.
There his trouble with women got worse.
The place was packed and there only seemed to be one bartender. A lot of the patrons were serving themselves and then placing their money in the register. Being new in town, Dug didn't want to try his luck. Instead he gently pushed his way through the crowd of revelers, and made his way up to the only empty spot in the bar.
The bartender was good. Dug was only there for a second before the man introduced himself as the owner of the Kicking Mule, and welcomed Dug to his establishment. "Your first drink is on the house," the man pleasantly informed him. "What will it be?"
Looking around at all the beautiful women, he laughed, and said "do you have anything that will make me irresistible to all of them?"
The bartender thought for a moment, then answered "you know, I think I do. Wait right here. I have to get something from the back room."
He left, then immediately returned with a small mason jar full of blue and yellow liquids swirling around together. "A medicine man from Boise taught me how to make this. I haven't used it in a long time. Kind of wonder if it still works."
"This will make me irresistible to women?" Dug was skeptical for a sober second, but then thought "It's on the house. What the hell do I have to lose?"
He opened the jar and drank down the yellow and blue swirl. Not surprisingly, it tasted yellow, blue, and swirly. When he was finished he set the jar back down on the bar and looked around.
Every woman in the crowded bar was looking back at him.
