Chapter Text
“You want us to WHAT?!?”
Chuuya and Dazai have been on various missions together. They have done everything imaginable. But this, this is something nobody could have predicted. There were easy tasks and some that nearly got them killed. The majority, if not all of them, were brutal. Violence was always the answer. Mori is known for going through with the unthinkable. No matter how gruesome, weird or scandalous. But cuddling up to hero-wannabes? He must have gone crazy.
Chuuya looked at Mori, as if he had just seen a ghost. At first glance, Dazai seemed to be unbothered. However, the small twitch of his mouth and the furrow of his eyebrows, told him otherwise. The redhead was still as stunned as before. He couldn’t understand why the boss, would send them to a hero school. Sending two executives for a mission this intermediate was excessive. UA is one of the, if not the most guarded school in Musutafu City. It makes sense to send skilled members. But sending two high ranking officers, seems to be a little overkill. Especially for six months. Sending away Soukoku for so long would be an enormous loss for the mafia. Mori studied their expressions for a second, seeming to take pleasure in their shocked faces, before he continued talking.
“Now, now I know this mission is unusual, but it is of most importance.”, he starts.
“Why are we interfering with Musutafa’s business at all!?! Won’t that only cause unnecessary chaos!?!” Chuuya interrupts.
On any other day, Chuuya wouldn’t dare talk to the boss like that. That said, the last few weeks had been very exhausting. Mission after mission after mission. This and having to work through not only his own, but also Dazai’s paperwork has taken a toll on him. He knew this new mission was going to be a pain in the ass as well. All in all, it wasn’t that difficult. They’d go to school, pretend to be heroes in training and get whatever Mori was searching for. However, not getting caught was crucial. The redhead’s strength was fighting, not being careful. A lot of the time things didn’t go as planned. Usually, violence seemed to get the task done. This time it was different. If they found out the mafia sent people to snoop around their territory, then things weren’t going to look well.
Yokohama and the rest of the world have had a treaty for decades now. What happens in Yokohama, stays in Yokohama. This also means, that they aren’t allowed to meddle in Japan’s business either. Traveling over the border is highly illegal. Of course it’s still done. There are enough underground businesses, travelling between the two cities. Selling drugs and other illegal substances. Even so, an interference by an organization as powerful as the Port Mafia would be like declaring war. Mori must have had good reasoning to go through with this mission.
“In the last few months, heroes have been getting increasingly closer to Yokohama. Around a week ago they trespassed into the city.”, he continued.
Slowly things were starting to fall into place. It was unusual for the boss to start trouble out of nowhere. Musutafu had been the one to cross the boundaries. Chuuya was aware that heroes had been getting closer and closer to the boarder. But he wouldn’t have expected them to break the rules. In comparison to Yokohama, Japan was structured, with a law-abiding society. Everything was registered, monitored and protected. So called villains were held in place by heroes. The crime rates were much lower, than where they lived. Here, the government was basically non-existent. Therefore, the Mafia ruled the city in most parts. The line between heroes and villains was blurry. Most people fell somewhere along a broader spectrum. The concept was simple. Either you knew your place or you paid for it.
So, to say, Musutafu starting this whole dilemma, was quite unusual. The government couldn’t have allowed it and there’s no way the citizens would stand by and watch it all happen. Unless, they had a ‘justifiable’ reasoning.
“They have been, as they call it, ‘rescuing’ ability users from Yokohama. They have kidnapped and integrated over twenty ability users, since the infiltration.”
Mori’s smile never wavered as he spoke, but the air in the room had grown noticeably heavier. “That number alone wouldn’t concern me,” he continued calmly. “What does concern me is the pattern.”
He folded his hands on the desk. “These rescues are not random. They target ability users tied directly or indirectly to my organization.”
Losing them wasn’t just a reduction in manpower. It weakened supply lines, disrupted long-standing arrangements, and shifted the balance of power in Yokohama. And worse, Hero Society was doing it under the pretence of righteousness.
“They are meddling in my affairs,” Mori said lightly, eyes sharpening. “And with each ‘rescue,’ they grow bolder.”
Pushing back against the opponent wasn’t difficult, but it used up a lot of resources and operatives. A continuation would only mean losses. In addition to that, they have been using new technology. Technology that weekend abilities immensely. If they managed to create a device, that could shut down abilities completely, then the Port Mafia could lose control. At least temporarily. This casualty obviously couldn’t continue. It was their mission to figure out the cities plan to neutralize Yokohama. Once Mori knew the ins and outs of these mechanisms, then he could find ways, to deem them useless. The main task however was to expose Musutafu. Should there be enough evidence, that heroes have been in fact not rescuing the gifted, but instead kidnapping and using them, then riots would surely arise. The people would want justice. Any hero involving themselves would get immense backlash. Their reputation would be ruined and so would their career. Nobody in their right mind would go near Yokohama again.
Gathering proof and getting information, was their highest priority.
Mori was aware, that hero society, was hungry for new ability users. Sending Chuuya and Dazai made the most sense. It was certain, that UA was going to keep a close eye on both of them. They wanted to learn more about the Ability users and Mori was going to give it to them. In exchange they were going to use that weakness to get what they wanted.
“Tomorrow morning, you will be sent to the boarder.” He explained
There Chuuya and Dazai would be rescued and sent to an evacuation centre. After that the usual procedure started. They’d get administrated, their abilities registered and a medical and psychological assessment would be done. After that they’d start attending UA high school. The new school year was starting in a few weeks. They had already missed the entrance exam. However, UA offered a special program for those rescued. Anyone from Yokohama with a quirk was allowed to attend the school. Of course there was a probation period. If they couldn’t keep up, they’d be transferred to another school. That wasn’t going to be a problem for Soukoku though.
“Mori-Sama, how could you do this to us~” Dazai sing songs, feigning an innocent tone. His hand flew dramatically to his head and he slightly angled his body away from the boss, seemingly trying to show his disappointment. “If you wanted us gone, you could have just said so. No need to send us to the mighty saviours of society.” He continues mockingly. Osamu covers up his displeasure with sarcasm. It’s what he always does. Nonetheless, the same heavy dread that churned in Chuuya’s stomach seemed to pulse through Dazai as well. They’d live in an unfamiliar environment for ages and to make things worse he’d have to go with that good for nothing mackerel. He could already see his work load sky rocketing.
“Further details to your new identities are in the folder. You have a long day ahead of you. Go get some sleep.” Mori said, ending the meeting, whilst completely ignoring Dazai. Chuuya bowed before heading to the door. Dazai, as expected turned around without further acknowledging the man. His business was done here. He felt no need, giving Mori even a second more of his attention. Coming to his office at all, was enough of a pain. He only came when it was absolutely necessary. Osamu had predicted this mission would come sooner or later, considering how many rescue missions they had had in the last few days. More days than not they had to retrieve ‘rescued’ members. Of course, Mori hadn’t phrased the task as that. He didn’t have to. What had been happening was obvious enough. He knew this mission would start soon. Chuuya and Dazai were clearly the best match. Still, he had hoped somebody else would be sent. There was a slow thump as the door closed behind them.
“Ne Chuuya~ I think you’ll fit right into hero society.” Dazai says with a wide grin. Chuuya’s posture turned straighter and his head cocked to the side. He looked startled, as if he’d just been pulled out of his thoughts. His stride slowed, until he came to a stop.
“Huh, why’s that?” he asked, sounding genuinely curious. His eyebrow raised slightly. Chuuya wore an innocent expression, not picking up on Dazai’s malintent.
“Hero society is nothing more than a well-trained dog. I’m sure you’ll feel right at home, Chuuya.” He teased. Chuuya turned bright red at the comment and grabbed the bandaged boy’s collar. With one fast swoop he lifted him up against the wall. He made it look like Dazai was as light as a feather.
“DID YOU JUST CALL ME A DOG?!?! IF ANYONE IS A DOG, THEN IT’S YOU” he shouted. His face turned even more crimson. Dazai feigned a pose of defeat. His body falling slack, with his hands held up high.
“No need to get angry Chuuya~, sometimes you just need to accept the truth.” He said cheekily.
They continued bickering, all the way to Chuuya’s house. They decided to stay together for their last peaceful hours in Yokohama, considering they had to get up early in the morning. Dazai didn’t bother heading to his container. It wasn’t like there was anything valuable in it. Everything could be replaced in Musutafu City. It also made more sense for the mission, considering both of them supposedly ran away. Showing up with a lot or anything at all for that matter could be suspicious. The chance their personal would get taken off of them either way was very high. Goods from Yokohama weren’t allowed in the rest of Japan. There could be some kind of tracking device hidden beneath the fabric. Or there could be drugs and explosive underneath. They had plenty justifications to confiscate anything and everything. Not that Dazai had a lot. He certainly wouldn’t miss his belongings.
At home they ate some canned crab for dinner. The bandaged boy wouldn’t eat anything else. Luckily the redhead always had some stocked up just in case. It was already late. Therefore, they skipped watching a movie or playing a board game. Instead, they took a shower and went straight to bed. They had an exhausting mission in front of them.
Falling asleep was easier, knowing they were still in the safety of their home.
