The Wildest Ride In The Wilderness

Summary:

A few weeks after her first couple of missions, Flippers is summoned back into headquarters for another assignment. When she is given her briefing folder, it is revealed that the reclusive inventor G is asking for her help this time. He’d been impressed by her use of the life persevere launcher and the grappling hook that she’d previously borrowed. That sort of quick thinking was why he wanted her to help him test out one of his new inventions.

G, as brilliant as he is, isn't a super adventurous person. He likes coming up with new ideas but prefers to leave the testing to other agents. It's also a way to see how intuitive the design is. But Flippers wasn’t nervous about it. She’d done great last time and was sure that she would do great this time as well. A simple test run couldn't be too stressful.

Chapter 1: Assignment From An Inventor

Chapter Text

The days in Club Penguin were usually sunny, and this was no exception.  The sky was bright and blue, the clouds were small and puffy, and the wind was blowing just right.  Lots of penguins were out and about.  They were taking advantage of the great weather to hit the slopes, go shopping, play sports, or meet up with their friends.  Not a single place on the island was silent, except perhaps for that mysterious building on a mountain that few penguins knew about.

Except one particular pink penguin had decided to stay home.

You see, it was Flippers’ day off.  The first she’d had in a while.  For the last month or so, since she’d completed her last mission and helped PH, she’d been doing nothing but training and filing.  So much filing.  When was the new system going to be up already?  It had been starting to get to her.  So today, instead of trekking all the way across the island to do who knows what, Flippers was relaxing in her igloo and reading a book.

It was a new one by a mystery author she liked, and there were quite a few delicious recipes inside it.  Flippers was going to have to try some out after she finished reading it.  If she were determined, that would be by dinner time.

However, it wasn’t super far into the day when she received a call on her spy phone.  She always kept it in reach just in case.  Expecting it to be either Sleet or Rookie checking in on her, or an emergency, she answered it.

“Good morning, Flippers,” Jet Pack Guy said, as gruff as ever.

“Hey, boss,” Flippers replied cheerfully, using her spare flipper to mark her spot momentarily.  “What’s up?”

“I know it’s your day off today, but I’ve just had a new assignment come in, and the agent has requested you directly.  It can wait until tomorrow, but-”

“Of course I’ll come in!” Flippers said, interrupting him.  “I’ll be there as soon as I can finish waddling over.”

“You aren’t upset about your day off?”

“Oh, I was just tired of doing nothing besides training and filing.  I know I still don’t have seniority by any means, but it was just making me mentally exhausted.  A mission is great!”

“Okay then, I’ll meet you in HQ.”

Flippers hung up the phone with a smile and popped over to her closet to grab her spy gear.  It consisted of her shades and a dark gray jacket, which went with a white undershirt; it was nicer than her old one.  They made her look sharp.  She wouldn’t put them on until she got inside, if she needed them.  If it were more of a casual mission, she’d just keep her blue sneakers and purple hoodie.  The breeze could get chilly at times.

“So,” she asked Jet Pack Guy after she walked in through the changing room door, “is this going to be another missing puffle search?  Cause I think I’m a bit of an expert on those now.”

Jet Pack Guy shook his head, a slight smile on his beak.  “No, nothing like that.”

Flippers let out a sigh of relief.  She’d take any mission she could go on, wanting to keep proving herself, but she was a little tired of puffles at the moment.  Mostly because of her missions.  Especially with being around Bongo so much.  Angbee and her loved the little creature, but he was very loud all the time.

“One of our other agents has reached out to ask you for your help with testing a new invention,” he continued.

“I thought that the tech agents usually asked penguins they knew for help with those sorts of things.”

“But he does know you.  You remember meeting G during your first mission, right?”

“Oh yeah,” Flippers said, nodding, “I almost forgot with how much was going on that day.  But, why me?”

“G wanted to read your report after your mission was over, to see what you had done with his equipment during the events.  He was very impressed, to say the least.”

“Really?”

“He said you displayed a lot of ingenuity and adventurousness, and that he was glad the grappling hook didn’t snap on you, since it was kind of dirty.”

Flippers waved the last comment off.  “It worked like a charm, the hook was the nice part of it, held the mountain, and found the crevices amazingly.”

“Anyways, he says those are the kind of qualities that make for great testers, and being an agent makes that even better since you can work on classified stuff.”

“I’m flattered,” Flippers smirked, half joking, half seriously.  “When should I start?”

“Right now,” the red penguin replied, “he’s already in The Sports Shop.  He decided to hold off on opening so he could brief you in private first.”

“I’m not underdressed, right?”

“Nope.  You’ll want to be wearing more casual stuff for testing missions.  At least, non-classified testing missions.  Just like any other penguin would when using the invention.”

“I’ll get started then,” Flippers said cheerfully before turning to walk back through the door.

“Good luck, and be safe out there, agent!”  Jet Pack Guy called out after her as she stepped through the curtain.
