The Other Side Of Paradise

Summary:

So Imagine a sad gay angst. Now make it based off of a Glass Animals song.

Notes:

When I was young and stupid my love, left to be a rock and roll star
He told me, "Please don't worry"
Wise little smile that spoke so safely

Chapter 1: Rock & Roll Star

Chapter Text

“BLUE!!” Dave shouted out across the parking lot. His voice echoing off the cars around him. “Dude! Where have you been?? School has been out for an hour!” Dave’s shoes clicked slightly as he sprinted to the boy across the lot. The black asphalt leaving a thin layer of grime on his shoes, the wind leaving the wild strip of brown hair that he slicked behind his ear flying. His faded grey hoodie with the hole on his left sleeve pulling against the wind. Dave leapt up into the dusk tacking his best friend Bayley “Blue” against his car.

“Hey Davey. Sorry I was late, I had shit to do…”

“Dude it ok. It’s good to finally see you.”

“Yea… wanna go for a drive?” Bayley gestures toward his car, the old beat up red sedan practically sighing at the request. Dave jumped over the hood… well tried to at least. With a pathetic groan he sat up from the ground laughing. He opens the passenger door and settles into his seat. The brownish stain from when his soda exploded is on the roof still. The collection of stickers from his oranges in the morning sitting on the glovebox door. The slight smell of ranch lingering from when he got dared to eat it, then proceeded to vomit it out all over the car. The car just feels right. It smells like Bayley and like ranch and oranges and a little bit like soda. But it’s just right.

As Bayley pulls out of the parking lot, headlights blinking against the other cars, engine grumbling at the idea of moving anywhere. Breaks squeaking every time they’re pushed on. The car seats groaning when the two boys lean back.

“So… you wanted to talk. You only say ‘ohhohhhhhh wannaaaa go for a drrrriiiiiive’ when you need to talk” Dave draws out his words, mocking Bayley just a little.

“Not cool man.”

“Yea cool man!” Dave snaps back “I’m so cool” He smirks just a little.

“Dude. I’m leaving.” Bayley just says it. No warning. Nothing. The car seems to slow. The trees mock Dave, the air running from his lungs.

“No… why? You can’t?? No.” Dave is at a loss for words. How could he… no.

“I’m moving out.” Bayley just stairs ahead onto the road. His knuckles going white on the wheel. His eyes veering slightly down. His green shirt seeming too tight. Scared to know how Dave will react.

“No…”

“I found a rock gig. Like you always said I would.” Bayley’s lip curving slightly up at the mention of Dave.

“We. Like I said we would. Together. Us. Our band. Our rock gig…” Dave’s eyes fall to the floor of the car, discarded candy wrappers around his feet

“Don’t worry. Please don’t worry.” Bayley’s eyebrows furrowing at the thought.
