Chapter Text
“Before there was light, before there was darkness, before there was anything. There was nothing, and before there was nothing. There was the Void.”
“A vast endless plain of nullity.”
— — — — —
Pearl simply existed. She simply was. Nothing more, nothing less.
She was as special as any other Farlander in her home. She lived how she knew she lived. In her Saints words, the words of code that made her, that made everything.
The Farlands was vast, she walked that vastness. She survived, she adapted, she grew.
Adapt, Overcome, Survive
Three thoughts that always existed in her mind. She knew those 3 words were how she survived this long.
Then they first arrived. The Angels.
There were 3, they always had 3.
The Watcher, The Listener, The Speaker
That's what they were called, that's how they would be called. Names were never Pearl's thing. They flew over the Farlands, they watched and listened below, searching for something. Someone for their games, they were pests.
And they noticed Pearl, who walked her path home. They had a player.
Pearl crossed the river, jumping the rocks that made her bridge. Feeling a chill down her spine as she made it to her farm.
Thud! Crash! Splinter!
Pearl stopped as the angels landed before her, The Listener on her shed the wood close to breaking completely, The Speaker on the top of her home, talons clawing at stone, and The Watcher… standing on her crops, destroying them.
She heard the Speaker babble about how great they were and their greatness. But Pearl didn't listen to them, she just stared at her crops which lie on the ground, crushed under the Watchers feet.
“You got a staring problem Glitch?”
Pearl took note of the Watchers' words, but she didn't care.
“You smashed my crops. I was going to eat those.”
The Watcher looked at the mess below them, smiling. A low chuckle turned to laughter.
“Oh that is great. Are you angry about your crops Glitch-” The watcher dodged the attack from Pearl. They were behind the Watcher now, having moved at speeds nearly unseeable by the Watcher.
“Off my crops!” She screamed at the Watcher.
“Look at that.. She wants a fight.” The Listener smiled at Pearl, hearing her low growling.
The Speaker also looked at the Farlander, intrigued. This was a fighter. Perhaps this player would give something special to them after all.
“I said off my crops!”
“Sheesh, you glitches are all punch first. You can't hit me.” The angel laughed at his own words
The tension between the two was thick enough to cut with a knife. Pearl wanted them to leave her at peace, but that idea isn't possible.
“I have an idea.” Pearl snapped to look at the Speaker. “We can do a little contest.”
“A contest?” Pearl asked the angel what he meant, wrapping her tail around her waist. “What do you mean by that?”
The Speaker smiled “A battle in a week. You and the Watcher and Listener.”
“A 2 v 1? That doesn't sound all too fun.” Pearl grumbled.
The two angels flew to the side of the Speaker. Smiling at the prospect of the game. What fun it could bring.
The Speaker smiled. “No it's not… I'll hand you part of my power. That should be enough for you to provide a challenge for these two.”
Pearl growled. “Fine. I'll play your little game. But only if you guys never come back when I win.”
“Love the confidence of this one, she thinks she can win.”
“I know I can and I will win.”
“Sure then… we will see if you win Glitch. You have one week to” The three angels began to glow, then their wings unfolded and they flew into the sky. They were gone soon after.
“Its Pearl, you fucking cunts.” She said with a growl, walking back into her home, her wings grew from her arms. It was painful but she finally could relax for a while.
She had some ideas of what to do to beat them all. Together those two would provide a problem for Pearl, but having assisted power from the Speaker, though she didn't trust it all too much, could provide much needed help to take them both down.
She could also use a bit more training.
— — —
A week passed for Pearl, who trained everyday, the sapphire suns hung high over her head, in any way she could. She would take short rests but she would train as much as she could. Till the day the angels arrived… 2 weeks later.
Seems they forgot the original date.
But everyday they didn't arrive Pearl would push herself more and more, to the point parts of her hair grayed, however she was proud of herself. Now she walked to the mini arena she made where she would face them.
They stood on the other side of the flat arena, staring as Pearl walked to them. The Watcher and Listener paid little attention to her, though she caught a glimpse of the Watcher looking at her.
“Wellcome Farlander. You seem to have not forgotten.” Such a smug look on his face.
“You're late.” She responded, arms crossed in annoyance.
“Are we? We said a week till we came back.”
“Yeah, it's been 2 weeks since then.”
The Listener tilted their head in confusion.
“2? I recall 1 week has passed since our last encounter. Unless this world has some kind of temporal phenomenon.”
“Anyway” The Speaker ended the questioning before it properly began. “The game is simple. A two versus one battle, with the Farlander being gifted part of my power. Speaking of which.”
They opened their hands showing an orange blaze that floated just above their palm. Pearl watched as it began to float towards her, eyes locked at the beauty of it. Soon it floated before her, mere inches from her. She was at a loss of words.
“Go on, take it.” The watcher finally spoke, eyes on Pearl.
Pearl took a breath and grabbed at the fire, feeling her body grow in heat. She clutched her stomach in pain as she collapsed to the floor.
Dammit, this hurts so much. Shit, shit.
She could hear the 3 speaking, it was blurred speaking but she could make out some words from their words. Weak was one… Pearl wasn't weak… she wouldn't die from the power the angels gave her… this was not their power, not anymore.
Her body melded with the energy, mixing with it, becoming one with it. Adapt, Overcome, Survive. The words echoed in her mind. She would do as they commanded.
She stood, her hair a mess and her body having grown marks all around her. Yet she was alive, a faint orange glow growing from her body as she stared at the angels who looked on, impressed.
“I'm impressed, you didn't die from all that.” The Speaker spoke looking at what their power did to the body of the glitch.
“I'm ready to fight now, unless you two want to forfeit so soon.” Pearl smiled at the angels who got up from where they sat.
“Now now, look at how cocky she's gotten from one experience of actual power.” The Listener stood next to the Watcher. “We should show her how below us she is, no matter what power she is given.”
“Let us show her then.” The Watcher began to glow with energy. “We will obliterate her.”
Pearl laughed at the idea of that, getting ready to fight. The 2 angels did the same.
Then the Speaker gave the signal to fight and the two sides charged at the other.
— — —
Pearl was immediately hit with beams of light as the Listener rammed into her, lifting her off the ground. She was taken high into the sky before she kicked the Listener off of her, Pearl flapped her wings to stay in the air a fair bit longer before she was struck from behind by the watcher.
“You couldn't hold her still any longer!?”
“She kicked me in the face, you moron!”
Pearl used this as a chance to attack, lifting a rock and tossing it towards the Watcher and flew behind it. They turned to look at the stone, making it explode with a glare, causing a cloud of dust and rubble.
“Really. A rock?” They stared into the dust when Pearl flew out of the cloud behind them slamming them to the ground, before barely dodging a blast from the listener, who shot many more.
Pearl tried to dodge the blasts, avoiding most before getting hit by one which slammed her into a nearby mountain. Swiftly recovering she sent waves of wind towards the angel with her wings before shooting a much more powerful jet of air.
“Shit!” cried the angel as they got knocked out of the sky, Pearl on their tail.
“By the Saint. This is gonna be tough. But with the purple one down I might stand a chance-”
Pssst!
Pearl jumped out of the way when she heard that. A blast of energy went right through everything in its path. Purple. Pearl turned to where it came from, seeing the Watcher with their talons clawed out to Pearl, glowing.
“You beast… how dare you strike me from behind.”
“Beast!? Just call me Pearl asshole!”
The listener flew from the trees, landing to the right of Pearl.
“No. Because a feral beast like yourself doesn't deserve a name.”
Pearl growled before she blasted an orange blast of light, the angels dodging it. They now flew above the lone farlander as they blasted back, with Pearl dodging as well.
“She used Yinci's power at least. We are pushing her to her limit then.” The Watcher looked down to Pearl as they shot a cannon of energy towards her.
Pearl ran from the beam and flew up to fight the angels with her hands, seeing she had a massive disadvantage from a distance. She had to stay close as much as she could, keeping the short distance between them was key to a victory.
The Watcher grabbed Pearl's arm and tossed her aside watching them swiftly recover.
“I'll give it to you glitch, you're pretty impressive… but it's not enough, even with Yinci's power. This is just too much for someone of the likes of you.”
Pearl just ran past them, the angel following as the Listener crouched to rest from the constant attacks from the farlander. Perfect.
— — —
The Watcher and Pearl chased each other to a sandy river bed, each striking over and over at each other. The Watcher began to glow a violent purple as their attacks grew more destructive, causing derby to fly to all sides, the Watcher moving out of the way to avoid them as Pearl seemingly got trapped inside.
“Oh shit!” She screamed as the debris crushed her.
The dust settled and Pearl was trapped below the fallen trees and stones. The Watcher moved towards the pile, laughing as they saw the Farlander struggle to crawl out of it.
“Look at you, trapped. Pathetic.”
“You fucking bastard.” Pearl's voice was pained, a branch had stabbed through her thigh. “H-how… I know you can see a lot but why cant I beat you!”
Desire of an answer… adorable.
The Watcher walked over to Pearl, amused at her pain. Watching her writhe.
“I saw everything you would do…. I let my guard down.” They pulled off their mask to show a singular eye. “I underestimated you.”
Pearl stopped struggling, smiling through the pain.
“Should've kept it up.”
Before the Watcher could do anything, Pearl stabbed a broken part of the tree into the now revealed weak spot. The angel backed as Pearl launched at them.
Crack!
They only barely opened their mouths to scream as Pearl's fist broke straight through their head. And just as fast as she put it in she pulled it out. Blood and guts, broken teeth, and brain matter all fell out as she did.
Pearl looked at her hand, ignoring the angel's corpse collapse in front of her. Her fingers were broken but that wasn't of interest either. Something was in Pearl's hand.
The Watcher's Eye.
The purple orb glistened in her hand, still covered by bits of flesh. The eye held the power of the watcher. She could feel it within the crystal, pulsing.
Pearl didn't know what to do with it at first, before she threw it in her mouth like a kernel of popcorn. Then its energy began to absorb into her own body, it echoed and pulsed, a slow pain built but Pearl ignored it. She smiled, this was gonna be fun. All this new power… she knew what to do. There was something she wanted to try.
— — —
The Listener felt a strange energy from where the Farlander and Xerin had continued battling. It felt as if their energies had mixed, then it went out like a flame.
The sounds of the world echoed. The beasts of this plain didn't understand how much greater the Pure beings were, the ones of this disgusting world would soon see.
“I mean.. I wouldn't call my home that disgusting, there is the insect pit but that's just a lot of bugs….you know… maybe it is disgusting there actually.”
She spun around to attempt to find what spoke, nothing was there but trees and bushes.
“That voice…. Where are you? What did you do to Xerin!?”
“Killed them.. They underestimated me.”
What!? No! They couldn't have died, not that easily. The thoughts echoed in
“It wasn't that easy really… got hit badly… still have a hole in my leg.. But it could've gone worse if my plan wasn't right.”
“Where are you!? Why is your voice everywhere!? How can you hear my thoughts!?”
A chilling laughter echoed.
“You think I'm talking! That's a good one! But no.. I’m not speaking.”
“Then what are you doing!?”
“Vyleth? Who do you speak to?”
Vyleth turned to Yinci, who seemed confused at her actions.
“Do you not hear her!? Her voice is everywhere!”
“No sister, I don't hear its voice anywhere, are you well?”
Vyleth froze, if Yinci didn't hear it but she could… no.. it couldn't be. That was a technique of the gods.
“Oh you, it's not just your gods who can do this, I have grown, all thanks to your friend. And that's not all I can do here.”
Vyleth screamed in fear and terror. No this couldn't be! This beast was in her head, slithering around like a serpent.
“Sister! What is happening!?” Yinci tried to grab their sister angel but they flew backwards.
“It's in my head! It's in my head! Crawling in my mind!”
“What!? How can it be in your mind! It must be out here!”
“Find it! Kill it!” Panic raised in her voice.
“No, don't try to find me. I'm already here.”
Vyleth froze as something shook the earth. Yinci looked up to see a dark silhouette in the sky… it got closer, and closer, till-
“Get out of the way!-” CRASH!
Yinci was thrown back by the impact, stopping him from interfering.
“Now then… let us finish this.” Pearlescent stood before the Listener, fear filling her mind.
“It seems you're not as cocky as before…. What? Are you scared?”
“What… how…. where?... “
“Now… you're not in a place to ask questions are you. I hate questions.”
“Im… going to kill you…”
The farlander laughed.
“Kill me!? Is that supposed to be a joke?”
She flew at the glitch, energy shaping to a spear before stabbing it forward. Pearl dodged the attack, gut punching her in return causing her to cough up blood.
“Gahh! H-How are you so fast!? You weren't this fast before!”
“Before, like I said, I've grown, I’m faster, stronger, and I can do a lot more than before.” Her fist glowed in a faint purple aura.
“Primitive beast! Your tainted kind do not deserve to wield the power of the gods!”
“Well… that watcher isn't using it anymore are they?”
“You bitch!” Vyleth shot a cannon of light at the farlander, causing an explosion of light.
“Ha Ha! Take that!”
The smoke faded as the Farlander stood standing, a barrier of inky darkness blocked the blast.
“What!?”
“Oh shit! I didn't know I could do that! Um…. goop go get that chicken! ” She called as the darkness split into tendrils and charged at the Listener, quickly wrapping her arms to the ground.
“What is this!? Let me go!” She struggled at the tendrils, they only dragged her more.
“Oooo I like this… dont got time for that though!” Pearl warped in front of the listener, looking down on the angel. “Let's see what I can do.”
The Listener felt unholy pain as the farlander put its arms onto each side of her head, slowly crushing her head.
“Please please please, have mercy!”
“Sorry… I warned you. I said I would win… and I did.”
SPLATTER!
Pearl looked at the crushed angel's head, seeing the green glowing orb inside.
The Listener’s Ear
“So they all have little orbs in their heads… wonderful… I wonder how this one tastes.”
Pearl grabbed the orb, not minding the brain mush, and ate it, just like the one before. She felt the pulsing of energy once again as it filled her body, along with the pain. A faint glow emanated from Pearl's body.
“Two out of three… ooooo echoey voice? That's nice.” Pearl hummed a little with her echoing voice, she enjoyed it… but maybe she would have to find out how to turn it off later.
“Uhhhh” A groan came from the forest, right where the final angel was. Said angel stumbled out of the forest in a daze before looking at the currently glowing Pearl. “What?”
Pearl turned to the Speaker. Look at that, you lived.
“You… you actually killed them both…” Their eyes looked to the Listener's corpse that was slowly turning to some kind of dust-like substance, it floated towards the Farlanders body. “What's… happening to her body?”
Pearl turned to the body, watching it meld with her code. They didn't know… that was an interesting turn of events… guess they truly are clueless to many things she's capable of.
“Ignore that, I won our little challenge.”
“Challenge? O-Oh… right… that, to be honest I didn't think you would win. How'd you do it?”
“Like I would tell you!, all that matters is that 2 of you are dead, and one remains.”
The speaker shifted their wings, did that… mean what they thought it meant? Was the farlander planning on attacking them next?
“Now, I'm not gonna do that! Why would I ever try something like that?”
Wait…
“My sister… was right! You can see my thoughts!?”
“I hear them as clearly as words, I see your mind as well, nowhere you go is safe from me.”
What…. How…
“I recommend you leave without any troubles.”
“I need my power back though. I can leave without all of it, I’d be trapped here!”
Hmmm… interesting. Aha, that's an idea
“.... then take it back.”
“... you're just going to let me take my power back? Just like that?”
“You can take it back with ease right? Same as how you gave it to me.”
“Yeah, yeah I can just take it back.”
“Take it back then.”
After that, the process began, the Speaker glowing alongside Pearl. As orange light began to connect the two beings, Pearl could feel her own power slowly weakening, while the Speaker felt revitalized. Their power was returning slowly.
“Ahh… my power returned to me, what a wonderful feeling to feel as myself again. That's all my power returned.”
“Alright then, that's all of your power back.”
“Yes yes… I'm back to my full streg- Gahh!”
The angel collapsed from a pain in their chest, it felt like a fire was burning inside their body. Nothing but eternal flames within the body growing outward.
“What, what is this!?”
“Don't think that I am done, did you forget the deal? If I win, you will never come back.”
“I know! What is this!? What did you do!?” Fear filled every part of the speaker.
“This isn't your power now… not anymore. It's mine now.”
“How!?... what did you do to it!?”
“I did what my kind does best… adapt. But I didn't adapt to it, no, it adapted to me…”
The speaker collapsed once more, the pain was too much to even move.
“But… the deal…. You tricked me!” Rage and fear, final emotions of a pathetic excuse.
“Tricked you? No.. I did not. As I said… once I win… you will never come back.”
Pearl stepped to the listener, before swiftly cutting his throat. The body finally died, the burning ended, and Pearl took the chance to rip out the final orb.
The Speaker's Throat
“Mmmm… might as well. Maybe it could be tasty, not as sour as the others… Hopefully.
She popped into her mouth and felt the last energy course in her body, then great pain began.
“Fuuuck… guess it's time.”
She’d been withstanding it for too long, her body began to dim from the radiance of the now 3 colors.
I…. can't speak… to.. Much… pain… am I… dying?
Death… after all what happened… to much pain… to much of it
Her life slipping from her hand… she hear a voice call from the deepest echos of her mind
Now isn't the time Pearl… this can't be your all, become one with it, it is yours now
In a single burst all her energy seemed to return, she stood up… a pale white yet deep blackness pulsing from her body.
Her eyes shifted like waves, the colors of purple, green, and orange seemingly fighting for control, before all were enraptured in the same monochrome her body was making.
Her core shifted, spiraling and cracking even more than it had been before it all erupted at once.
A pillar of light and darkness erupted into the sky, shattering the sapphire suns at once. The light slowly began to be consumed by the darkness, till it became an outline of the shadows.
The pillar began to recede into a roundness around Pearl's form, now shattering and melting like her core, melting the wounds and repairing it at a rate faster than any healing could work.
1 Farlander, 3 Angels, 1 remained, and 1 will stay.
The energy began to shrink into Pearl's being, her core was complete, she was complete.
Nothing seemed to change at first glance, her monkey tail still swung behind her, her wings still the same… until you witnessed her aura. It was like how it was before she erupted… but no, only black and white slowly moved over her skin, 3 orbs spun, purple, green, orange, also covered in the aura. Her eyes were still the blue they always were, but the pale white creeped on the edges
“That felt…. By the void…. That was… AWESOME!” She looked at her body now, seeing the little details. “I feel like I can take one of the Great Hungers!”
Perhaps so…
Pearl froze, it was that voice, but now she felt as if she knew it… someone she knew.
“..Mother?”
Mother… the void herself was speaking to her?
Yes Pearl, it is ,… visit me, I have something to say.
“Y-yes mother. I will be there.”
— — —
“And yet, in the empty space that was the Void, life still formed.”
— — —
Pearl didn't know how, but she began to fly to the center of the farlands without opening her wings, and despite being quite far from the center, she seemed to rocket to the lake in the middle, and most importantly, the hole.
She landed perfectly, stilling before looking down. It was endless, the stars alone were there, nothing else, the water seemed to fall endlessly as well.
But she knew down there, was her mother, the void, and its queen. So, she jumped.
Normally to jump down was to become one of the stars, as she watched the farlands vanish, the earth around her vanished, and their arms reached for her. She fought them off, but for every one beaten away, another 2 would come from the other sides, she fought them as much as she could, sparking with light but it would call more.
Oh Pearlescent, join the eyes in the sky, you are worthy their echoed voice entered her mind. But she refused
“I must see mother! She calls for me!”
Then they stopped, receding back, Then witness to her darkness.
Pearl looked down, seeing the bottom of an island. Isle of the Saint, echoed in her mind.
She began to speed up while heading straight towards the islands, unsure what would happen if she went head on with the solid land. But she went for it. Closing her eyes, she felt the feeling of sludge around her before she felt the emptiness of gravity… before hitting the ground.
Silence started before a small “ow” came from her mouth. She got up quickly though, instincts and all that. She looked around, the isle was… kinda bland really. It seemed like just a fairly small floating island.
But in the middle, was a mountain in the center of the flat landscape. It was tall, reaching towards oblivion, the endless abyss above only had eyes, staring at her as she approached her mothers mountain.
— — —
“The Titans of the Void.”
— — —
Within the darkness of the mountain was a pool of water. A faint glow emanated from it, there it was. Her mothers pool.
Pearl stood on its rocky shore, from the surface she didn't see an end to the pool's depth, it seemed endless, but down there, was her mom, she took her steps forward.. And dived.
She took note that all the light from the pool was gone now, it was dark but she knew where to go, so she swam down, deeper and deeper, the water became thick like slime, getting harder and harder to swim. But she pushed through, taking note of some interesting things she noticed.
Despite being down here for only what seemed like a few minutes, she felt as if eons had passed, not only that space seemed to work differently here, the aisle couldn't have been this big inside despite being so small. Space and time seemed to be distorted.
She stopped, this had to be deep enough. And suddenly a group of words formed in her mind and so she spoke them.
Galactic, one of the native languages of the void. It was the most simple one, cosmic beings understood it perfectly, she had heard how it was the most common language used in the void. But she then heard a response, alongside a feeling of arms wrapping around her.
“∴ᒷꖎᓵ𝙹ᒲᒷ ᒲ𝙹ℸ ̣ ⍑ᒷ∷ᓭ ᓵ𝙹ꖎ↸ ᒷᒲʖ∷ᔑᓵᒷ, ᔑᓭ ╎ℸ ̣ ∴ᒷꖎᓵ𝙹ᒲᒷᓭ ||𝙹⚍”
A hug…
Pearl sniffed before diving into the hug, feeling a body as she wrapped her arms around it as much as she could. It was cold.. A good coldness.
She opened her eyes to find herself back on the surface, sitting on a stone. She looked around, getting up before seeing a pair of pale white eyes in the darkness. Void Mother.
Pearl immediately got on her knees, her mere presence was overwhelming. She was honored to be this close to her, to the only one she would kneel before.
“Get up. Never kneel.”
Pearl got off her knees, looking into the eyes of mother. Her voice was echoey, like an echo trapped in a cavern.
“I only kneel to you, only you.”
“Great, but don't do it again. It's rude.”
Pearl nodded at her words.
“Now.. I assume you are wondering why I called you here.”
Pearl rubbed the back of her head, she… was wondering why.
“Yeah… why did you call for me… is it because of what happened in the Farlands?”
“... Yes… that is related to the reason. But allow me, I want you to continue what you started.”
Pearl tilted her head at that, what did she mean? She meant the angels right? Continue what exactly?
“Um… what do you mean by “continue what I started”? Seems… important.”
Mother Void reached a claw out to her, sifting through forms as it lay on Pearl's head, once more she spoke, but more tender this time, as if to be relaxing, which felt somewhat counter intuitive.
“You must exterminate the angels, they have tormented many of your siblings of the void, not just the Farlanders but the Walkers as well. You must end their torment.”
“You… want me to… kill them all? But.. I'm not strong enough! I struggled with 3! There's hundreds of thousands of angels! Sure I got stronger but there's no way I can face them all at once!”
She felt the voids claw brush her cheek, it was… so cold.
“I created you by hand Pearl, every part of your being has a purpose to me, and so forth to you. You have the power to do this, the power of the ones who had slain has perfectly merged with you. And you will continue to absorb the more you slay, an army of one you could say.”
Pearl looked at her hands, she was much more powerful than the average angel now, about as powerful as 3 angels, plus her own power. And if she did do this…. She would become even more powerful then she was now.
All she needed to do was kill.
“Understand, their power may be great, but you surpass them. They will mean nothing to you in the end.”
Nothing… she had seen those angels. Screwing with lives, destroying towns. It enraged her. It made her livid to remember what they did. To be the reason it all stopped… all logic was thrown out the window, she will do it.
“I'll do it, I’ll kill every single angel till none remain, I promise mother.”
She felt the claw on her head now, still so cold.
“Wonderfull, now then, go on and end all you see.”
Pearl got up and nodded before running to the edge of the isle, she will keep her promise. She began to fly off before her mothers voice called out.
"Oh and one more thing. Punch a God for me"
She laughed, she will, she promises. Pearl flew downwards to the center of the farlands, crossing the hole with no issue as the stars now knew her plan.
— — —
“Among the Titans, there was the third to come to existence.”
“Its name was, The Iris.”
