Work Text:
Rev walked through the empty dorm halls. His mind racing with thoughts as he remembered what had transpired on the roof earlier.
'Did I... seriously just do that?'
He hunched over one hand holding the wall for support as the other covered his mouth. He looked as though he was about to barf.
'Jesus... why the hell did I do that?'
'What is this twisting feeling?'
'Why do I feel this way?'
He could do nothing but go to his dorm and hope it goes away. Hope that this is all just one bad dream.
It wasn't though, and his actions would come with "severe" consequences.
He would eventually make it back to his dorm. Thankfully that obnoxious vampire was asleep.
"... Good that's... good," he said to himself as he collapsed into bed.
He closed his eyes hoping to get some rest before school starts.
"... I guess it didn't feel so- NO," he slapped himself before he could be honest with himself.
He took a few deep breaths before letting himself to fall into a deep sleep. If he had a beating heart he's sure it would be racing right now.
The night passed and Rev awoke to none other than the sound of a sickeningly cheerful vampire.
"Morning Rev! Come on class is about to start!"
Mark made it sound like a good thing, but it was anything but. Rev blinked the sleepiness away.
"... Yeah okay," he wanted to scream to yell. Right now though his focus was solely on that wendigo.
After some reluctance Rev got dressed and prepared to face the music. No matter what he thought he still wanted a clear explanation from the wendigo and the witch.
Outside the dorm there was a thick fog, but the two managed to meet up with Sera.
"Oh, hey Sera," Rev said with a sense of tiredness in his voice.
"Hey," Sera's usual bored tone was unmistakable.
"Hey, where's Bella," Mark broke the awkward silence.
'Dammit the one time I wanna actually see someone.'
"Library," Sera shrugged as she turned to lead the two.
"... Well? Let's go already," Rev tapped his foot impatiently.
"Oh okay."
Meanwhile at the library.
Wendy was sitting next to Bella slumped over.
"Did I go too far?'
Bella shut her book and looked at the Wendigo in despair, "Um... maybe?'
"Gee thanks..."
"Look, Wendy, maybe you shouldn't be so... um depressed? It was your choice to go with it anyway."
"I know, but do you think he's mad?"
"No doubt."
Wendy sighed and soon spotted him. She let out a small "eep" and ran behind a bookshelf before anyone could notice her and watched from afar.
Rev sat across Bella, "... Where's the wendigo?"
This was different. For some reason Rev didn't seem angry or annoyed. For once Rev didn't have his emotions on display.
"Um she just..." Wendy was shaking her head at Bella, "she left a few minutes ago."
The revenant just let out a tired sigh as he sat down, "Dammit... well do you know where she went?"
"Uh well..." Bella watched over Rev's shoulder as Wendy snuck away, "have you checked... the courtyard?"
"Hm..." Rev's mind was desperately telling him to go, but some part of him told him she wouldn't be there.
Sera was the first to notice he was conflicted, "Mark and I can check the courtyard."
There was a long silence before Rev nodded and quietly said the word, "Thanks" before running off.
"Did he just..." Bella was left alone as Sera dragged Mark, "Okay... never mind then."
Being left alone by your own friends is never a good feeling. Especially for someone like Bella. Someone who was pining for the guy she helped get with someone else.
A tear fell onto the cover of her book as Bella's breath began to grow ragged, "Dammit... don't cry. This is for the best."
Luckily no one had been in the library with her. She slumped over, holding the book tightly like it was her only support. "H-He'll be happier with her."
She muffled her cries by crying into her uniform's sleeves, "He... could never love me anyway."
"Any luck, Sera," Mark asked as he checked behind every bush.
"She's not here," Sera admitted bluntly.
"W-We don't know that for sure-"
"Divine sight."
"Oh... right. Where's Rev then?"
"Graveyard."
The graveyard always did have a dark yet calming aura. It was also the closest thing to a forest the school had given all the dead trees.
"Where are you..." Rev muttered to himself.
While he wasn't entirely sure he had a feeling Wendy would definitely be here. The fog was certainly not making it easy to find her.
The second he heard footsteps on the grass he turned around, "Wendy? Is that you?"
He chased after every small noise.
'... Why am I trying so hard?'
He quickly shook his head to get rid of the thought.
'I'm doing this for myself.'
"Wendy!"
She had enough, "Go away, Rev."
It wasn't loud, it had no bite, and yet her words made Rev's heart twist.
"Wendy please... I just want to talk."
"N-No..."
Each word she spoke was losing any poison it would normally have.
"Wendy... I'm not mad... but please I need answers."
"I... I don't-" she cut herself off as she heard footsteps approaching his footsteps.
She froze when she looked up to see him looming over her, "Please... pushing me back won't make either of us feel better."
Her breathing was uneven as she felt Rev pushing her not physically but emotionally. Upon seeing this Rev sighed and sat down next to her.
"... Guess I'll just wait then, but please don't go avoiding me."
She pulled her knees to her chin and felt her mask slip a little, "Stop... please I was an idiot just... just forget it."
"Like hell I will. You were being so honest back there. What the hell happened?" There it was Rev's usual annoyed tone. It was clear though like Wendy's words there was no real bite behind them.
Silence. Complete and deafening silence.
Rev stayed true to his words though and waited.
"... I wasn't thinking-"
"Shut up. We both know that isn't true. I don't want that excuse either."
"... You want me to be honest, right?"
"Yeah... I do."
"Bella... never gave me a love potion."
"... What?"
"She... She gave me a truth potion."
"Ah I see, so that's why you weren't as annoying."
"Shut up... I'm not that annoying, right?"
Rev was genuinely caught off guard by that question and her sad tone, "Well, you were at least tolerable most of the time."
"Oh... okay."
Again another long silence that Rev had to break through, "So, back there on the roof everything you said was true?"
A hint of red spread across her face, "Yeah... all of it."
"Um... how long did you feel that way about me?"
"I... actually don't know."
"Huh?! So you just- seriously?"
"Yes seriously. I don't know when I started seeing you like that. I just... wanted to push you away so bad when I did feel like that."
"What why?'
"Because... I was scared, okay?"
"Oh... and I assume you asked for Bella's help to finally be honest?"
"Y-Yeah I did... but it was also because I thought if I didn't say anything you'd..." her words trailed on as she pulled her legs closer.
"... Yeah you're probably right. Still... I'm glad you were honest."
"What?"
"Listen I'm not... good at this whole 'being emotional' thing. Hell, most of the time my emotions are either angry or annoyed. Back there though... I feel like I could finally be safe."
Wendy's limbs relax though she was still curled up defensively, "What do you mean safe?"
"Ugh I mean that... I could let out how I felt... subconsciously."
"So... you were... comfortable?"
"Yes! Jeez, I felt like I could melt into your arms."
She began to wipe away her tears, "Dammit, zombie, you're such an idiot."
"Yeah, yeah right back at you, cannibal."
The corner of her lips curled slight, "I guess I just overreacted, huh?"
"Yeah, and scared the shit out of me."
"I... I did?"
"Yeah, I thought you didn't wanna look at me again. I was... scared things were gonna be... too different."
"... Pussy. If you think something like this is a setback to me then you're even dumber than Sam." There it was Wendy's iconic attitude. She stood back up and stretched, but she froze as something hit the ground.
Bella quickly wiped away her tears as she heard footsteps approaching. "Y-Yes," she exclaimed she sat up right.
"Uh... we didn't say anything," Mark said as he sat back down.
"O-Oh right of course. So did you find her?"
"No," the angel said in her monotone voice.
"Nah, she wasn't in the courtyard."
"I see... where did Rev go anyways?'
"Graveyard," the two said together although Mark's voice was more exhausted than Sera's.
"So... Rev and Wendy are alone?"
"Huh, I guess they are. Ah! They're gonna destroy the school!"
"No," Sera said plainly.
"How do you... right divine sight."
There was a pause before Bella spoke up, "Wait can you tell us what they're up to?"
"... No."
"What! Why not," Mark seemed devastated.
"They should be alone."
"Fine..." Bella went back to reading through blurry eyes.
"Bella, are you okay," Mark asked.
"Y-Yeah totally fine."
"She's crying."
"N-No I'm not, Sera."
"I don't understand. This was your idea," Sera said.
"I-I can still hate it though."
Rev stared at the mask that had fallen on the ground before looking up and seeing Wendy covering her face.
"D-Don't look at me," Wendy exclaimed and pressed her head into a nearby tree, and her face buried into her palms.
Although as curious as Rev was he was here to grow closer to Wendy not make her do anything she doesn't want, and so he bent down and picked up the mask.
"H-Here..."
"... C-Can you not look?"
"... What happens if I do?"
"I don't think I could look at you if you did."
"Wendy look... I don't think you should feel so insecure. I'm sure you're beautiful under the mask."
"D-Don't just say stuff like that."
"Hey... you were honest with me. Shouldn't I do the same?"
"That's not... f-fine."
Wendy began to turn towards Rev.
"W-Wait you don't have to show me if you don't..." he couldn't get the last words out as his eyes laid upon one of the most beautiful people he's ever met.
"D-Don't just stare, zombie boy."
No response just stunned silence.
"C-Come on say something! Anything!"
"You're... you're beautiful."
She immediately felt her face burn up, "Wh-What!"
Rev watched as Wendy went back to burying her face into her hands this time it was for a different reason though. Of course Rev saw this as an opportunity to tease her, "Hey now there's no need to hide from me."
"Sh-Shut up... I'm not hiding. I just need to calm down a bit-"
Rev moved closer and cupped her cheeks after moving her hands away, "Then at least look at me."
As the two at each other's eyes they finally felt their hearts calm down. No longer were their minds racing. No more did they worry about who could find them. They only saw each other. They only saw the unyielding love in the other's eyes.
"R-Rev?"
"Yeah," Rev began to move closer their lips almost meeting.
"... N-Nothing-"
Wendy's words were cut off and her eyes widened as she felt their lips finally meet. Almost immediately she closed her eyes and melted into the kiss.
His hands moved down to her waist and wrapped around her while she put her arms around his neck. The kiss lasted longer than they expected, and when they separated they were out of breath.
"Rev that was..."
"Did that calm you down?"
"Y-Yeah... it did. Um... c-can I have my mask back now?"
"Oh, yeah here."
Rev picked up the mask and put it on her adjusting it ever so slightly. "There. Should be good now," he said as he stepped back with a proud expression.
"Thanks... we should probably head back now?"
"Oh, right we should. They're probably worried... at least Mark is."
As Rev turned around something tugged at his uniform. It was Wendy. She was looking away in an awkward manner while blushing.
"Yeah, what is it," Rev asked in a more softer tone.
"Can um... have another?"
Rev blinked once before smiling, "Seriously? Not even a 'please' how rude?"
Wendy pouted, an expression that even Rev had to admit was adorable, "F-Fine... can you... please kiss me again?"
"Jeez, you're so awkward sometimes," he sighed before leaning down and kissing the wendigo yet again.
This kiss didn't last as long, and they were back to walking shortly after. After a few minutes of walking Wendy grabbed Rev's sleeve.
"Yeah?"
"Hand... I wanna hold your hand."
"O-Oh yeah... sure."
Though both their hands were as cold as ice that just made their bond stronger. The two had cold hearts that are starting to thaw.
"He's coming back," Sera said as her head perked up from her nap.
"Y-You sure," asked the witch who's still trying to get her feelings in check.
Sera nodded. While Mark was already shaking from excitement Bella was taking a few deep breaths. Eventually she pulled out a vial of a dark liquid and hid it under the table. It was a potion something she labeled an emotion suppressor.
She debated on whether or not to drink it.
"Hey, guys, I'm back."
There it was. This final nail in the coffin. Rev entering the conversation unprompted. Hand in hand with Wendy. Worst of all he had a smile on his face. Not a sinister one as usual or a forced one this was a genuine smile. Something no one could ever get him to do. Yet here he was smiling with Wendy.
'This is for the best. This is for the best. This isfor the best. This isfor thebest. Thisisforthebest,' her mind spiraled with the same thought eventually becoming a garbled mess. Before she knew it she started hyperventilating.
"I-I have to go..." Bella's words trailed on and mumbled.
"Something wrong," Wendy asked.
"... B-Bathroom."
Bella got out as soon as she could clutching the potion tightly. When she made it to the bathroom she stared at the woman in the mirror. Her mind raced with thoughts. She held her head in hopes of keeping the thoughts out. Then she heard it. She heard herself in the mirror.
"You're an idiot."
"Sh-Shut up..."
"You could've had him easily."
"No... stop..."
"Although it makes sense. After all he would've gotten bored of you."
"No... no he-"
"That's why you tricked him into dating Wendy."
"I-I didn't-"
"But hey at least they're happier."
"..."
"He's far happier than if you got with him."
"... He is..."
"You realize he's gonna take her to the dance, right?"
"Y-Yeah..."
"You might as well just not go. Going alone is too pathetic."
She looked at the potion in her hand.
"Are you seriously gonna take that? You're a coward taking the easy way out."
"Th-This..."
"That's the only thing you know. The only way you can 'solve' your problems."
She popped off the cap and chugged the bitter liquid. The mirror going back to normal and her expression unreadable.
"This is for the best."
"Bella! What took you so long," Mark asked slightly worried.
'Is it okay for me to be here,' Bella thought. "Took a while to find the bathroom," She said with a dull tone.
"You okay? You're starting to sound like Sera," Rev joked.
'I'm not okay.'
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"O... kay. Maybe you should lay down," Wendy said.
For some reason Bella couldn't stand her voice. Not right now at least, "I'm gonna... take a nap."
"That's not like her," Wendy grew a bit worried.
"I'm sure she's fine. I doubt she'll skip class," Rev said as he ruffled Wendy's hair causing her to smile.
"Ah! I forgot I'm gonna be late," Mark said as he ran off.
"... I should go too," the angel said.
Rev sighed as he got up, "See you in alchemy class then?"
"Y-Yeah! See you there."
Classes went by as normal. Although alchemy class was anything but normal. Rev sat next to Wendy, and Bella sat alone, quiet, and completely disinterested. Deep down though Bella was dying on the inside.
The winner takes it all, and the loser falls.
