Work Text:
The news arrive without any warning. They were going out together after he got back from the office. She's standing aimlessly in the decorated living room now. She doesn't know what to do.
She hears Mom talking on the phone in their room. She doesn't understand the words, but hearing them makes her chest hurt. She doesn't know why.
She shuts herself in her room and turns the lights off. When it's dark, no one can see her, so she doesn't have to be strong. Her eyes feel warm and her cheeks are wet. She doesn't know how much time passes.
She hears a knock.
"Kurara... are you okay?"
She is not okay. She failed him again. She can't control her powers like he told her to. She can't be strong like he taught her to be. That's why he isn't coming back. He'll return once she's normal again, right? She doesn't know.
"I... I'm coming in, alright?"
No. Not like this. Don't turn them back on. Please. I'll show him I can do it. I promise. I promise.
Her hand brushes past it. She hates it. He got it for her. It's the only gift he ever gave her. It's hollow inside. If she puts it on, it will be dark even if the lights are on. She knows what she has to do.
"Come in, Mother! I feel fine, thank you."
