Work Text:
Steve has been putting off his science project for as long as he could, but he’s finally faced with the due date and no model to show for it. He had to come up with an experiment involving biology and be able to get it done before the end of the week, so he went to the smartest person he knew.
“Please,” Steve begged, about to get on his knees if Dustin said no again. “I need your help.”
Dustin kept walking, going to his kitchen where several water bottles that were cut in half sat on the window sill. Each one had soil and a plant growing out of it.
“There’s no way you can make a whole project in a week,” Dustin told him. “But, I do have this,” he gestured to the plants, “under some conditions.”
Anything to get a passing grade. He’ll drive him to the arcade, or buy him ice cream, or do anything he wants.
“You will learn about my experiment, pass a quiz I make for you, and do your own experiment after the assignment is over, so you still get something out of it,” Dustin said, his tone indicating that he won’t take no for an answer.
“Would you help me?” Steve asked.
Dustin gave him a ‘duh’ look. “Yeah, dude. You’re hopeless without me,” he said.
Steve sighed in relief. “I can’t thank you enough,” he said, slumping down into the dining chair.
Dustin grabbed the tray of plants and brought them over to the table to sit with Steve. “I’m studying how different environmental factors affect plant growth,” he explained. “Each day, I take the plants away one at a time and play a different kind of music for them, to see how they react.”
Steve leaned forward, looking at the plants. They were all labelled with different music genres and there were obvious differences in the height. He had to admit, it’s pretty cool.
By the due date, Steve knew everything he had to about the plants and he brought them in. His teacher didn’t necessarily believe he did the assignment, but gave him a good grade anyway. As promised to Dustin, he did his own afterwards, and had more fun than he thought he would.
