As I stand in the very room meant to be a sanctuary from the outside world, I feel unsafe. Any second now, my father could burst through the door and kill me. Maybe he already knows. Maybe he hasn’t noticed the way my hand naturally falls to the growing swell of my stomach. But I must leave before he comes for me. Before he forces me to stand in front of a man I don’t love and say my vows through tears. Before he forces me to take a pill that will get rid of the last remnants of him. When I do finally step out of the palace, I feel a shiver work its way up my spine. I’ve never felt so alone.
