Spanish Flashcards

Summary:

Coming home devastated and exhausted from work, Derek finds a pile of Spanish flashcards on his desk.

Notes:

Alright, there are too many Trauma Team fanfics! Here's an Under the Knife 2 one I made April last year. Spanish-speaking Trauma Centerers, I apologize for any mistakes beforehand.

Work Text:

Creaaaaaaaaaak....

Derek hears the slightly eerie sound of his apartment door. It was cold, dusty, and especially dark inside—until he flipped the switch.

He sluggishly took off his shoes and his long white coat—garments that make him "more doctor-like," as Angie said. The piece of clothing flew across the room from his hand, just barely making it on the couch.

Then, he threw himself on the sofa, supposedly for two—the impact of his body finally prompting his coat to fall on the dust-filled floor.

"What have I done...?" His wet face was covered with pillows.

"I...I didn't mean to- I was trying my best to save everyone in that room, I swear...!

"B-but...there were simply too many...I... I can only save so many patients..."

...

Letting his face rise from the now drenched cushion, the doctor looked at his desk. On the table was a bunch of Spanish flashcards.

His frown grew darker; contrasting the cartoon-y kid in one of the cards greeting "Buenos dias!" to his friend.

He grabbed the bunch promptly, and flipped around them.

...

"Buenos tardes."

His first words to him. Just add a "Medico..." at the end.

"Cómo estás?"

He probably used that to a certain nurse once. He remembered her chuckling when she heard the phrase from him for the first time.

"Que tal?"

The surgeon swore that he said that exact phrase to a...certain patient, before.

"Hasta luego!"

...That phrase, too.

"Mas o menos."

He could almost hear that patient's voice again.

"Adiós."

  ...Silence.

...

Then, out came the flashcard for "Lo siento." A boy wearing a white shirt hugging a crying girl donning a pretty blue dress was the picture that came along with it.

...

"Lo siento. Lo siento..."  He was oblivious to his pronunciation.

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry, Ms. Ross..."

"I'm sorry...that I wasn't able to save him....."
