A story of an inevitable love

Summary:

"Just say it Damian! You don’t like me, you already rejected me so many times! Why is it impossible for you to say it straightforwardly?!”
“I didn’t want to break your heart just for a childish crush! And now it’s your preheat talking, you don’t really want to spend it with me.”
“So you knew it all this time?!”
“Of course I knew, you weren’t subtle.”

Jon didn't know when he fell for Damian. He only knew that throughout all his teenage years, he had been pining for him, clinging to the fragile hope that one day, his feelings might be returned.
Maybe one day Damian would notice him.

Chapter 1: Presentation

Chapter Text

When Batman and Superman made their respective sons hang out together they expected them to become good friends just like their fathers did.
The boys friendship were a little rocky in the beginning but later they surpass their differences and became great friends even if one of them didn't acknowledge it directly, Damian Wayne was not a boy that make friends easily, his years growing up in the League of Assassins made him to believe that that kind of connection were a weakness, for a long time the boy always corrected the people that called his acquaintance friends, they were allies, for Jonathan it sounded funny, he thought it was just one of those things that Damian said because of his pompous way of talk, but after a few missions between the two boys, the younger managed to tumble down the emotional barriers of the other, and Damian just simply started calling Jon his friend.
This friendship remained like that for a few years, but it had to change when one day something unexpected happened.
Clark Kent and Lois Lane knew that their son, being half kryptonian probably wouldn’t have a secondary gender, just like his father that was simply seen as a beta, or on the other side would have one just like his mother, an alpha female from a family that didn't have so many omegas by birth, assuming that their alpha gen was simply very strong they tough that if the day that Jonathtan present a secondary gender comes he will be an alpha just like his mother.
It wouldn't been a surprise, the boy even has some traits that were more socially seen as alpha traits, he could be short tempered, Damian always said that, he was never submissive, and also had his father’s strength, of course that people outside of the hero community didn’t know this comes from his kryptonian DNA, and assumed it was something from his mom’s alpha genes.
It was a surprise when, shortly after Jon’s thirteenth birthday, Clark Kent answered a call from Damian, the boys were hanging at the Fortress of Attitude, the kids’ base, when Jonathan became a little feverish, alerting Damian, since being a half kryptonian prevented the boy from getting sick, it was clearly something to worry about, then when he helped the younger to lie down on a couch a sweet scent hit his nose.
He realised, Jon was presenting, but not like an alpha as all they thought, the very sweet scents was not something common among alphas, that was a common omega’s trait, this alerted the alpha boy even more, even if his autocontrol was something he didn’t doubt, a childly base was not a place to have a heat, and the only way that an omega in heat could get out of the base and arrive safely to his parents house was being carried by his father, so he didn’t have other choice than call Superman.

The man was reviewing a script, in an hour he will be calling it a day and head for home after another day working at Daily Planet, but his phone ringed and the name on the screen was not from someone that called regularly, hell the only reason he saved the number was in case he needed a way to contact Jon if he wasn’t picking up his calls, a little confused when he hitted the green button.
“Hello, Damian. Is everything ok?”
“Salutes Mr. Kent. Everything is ok, well mostly. You see, Jon is presenting. You need to come and get him home. We are at the fortress.”
“Is he? It’s a little unexpected, but I’ll be there in a few minutes, please be careful and leave, we don’t know how aggressive his rut can be with the em… condition he has… I’ll contain him.”
“I think a few minutes could be a little too much Mr. Kent, he needs a space guarded by his parents now.”
“Did he attack you? It really will be best if you leave, we don’t know if he will be very dominating with near alphas, so please…”
“Mr. Kent you really need to come here, he’s not aggressive but I don’t imagine the fortress is a very homely place to have a heat.”
“A… Heat?”
“TT. Yes Mr. Kent, a heat.”
“Oh Rao, I got it, ‘ll be there in a moment,” the journalist got up from his chair and ended the call, he walked near super speed to his boss office and from the door he just announced: “Gotta go, my boy is presenting” and banished from the building.
When he reached the fortress a few seconds later his son was crushing his friend in a painful hug, the other nearly got his ribs broken that day, but it wasn’t something Damian was paying attention, the omega was panicking and hiding in the juncture of his neck, refusing to release his grasp, only super strength could make the boy to lose his grip letting the other get away.
Superman got his sobbing son home safely, but not in the apartment in Metropolis, he determined that the safest place was in Smallville, at his parents farm. A few hours later Lois Lane descended from her car worried and walked straight to his son’s room.

A week later the recently presented omega emerged from his room and hugged his parents all morning, till his father told them that they should be doing some research since he was the first omega kryptonian. They had been reluctant to make the boy take the tests for secondary gender when he entered his teens, afraid that his kryptonian nature would show and questions arouse in the medical field, so they didn’t have many options, and that leave them with the help of Gotham’s vigilante and his medical bay in the batcave, so after a few calls they flied there.
Jonathan was fidgeting when he entered the cave, he remembered the way he glued himself to his friend when he realised what was happening and got near a panic attack. His friendship with Damian was really solid, but the other was never physically affectionate, and he clearly recalled how he tensed when Jon first hugged him, and the boy couldn’t avoid the blush that invaded his cheeks.
Bruce Wayne welcomed the family and guided them to the medical bay, Jon couldn’t help searching for his friend with his glance and locate him in the batcomputer, apparently reviewing some case files, that didn’t make him feel relieved, but he just continued his way with his parents.
At the medical bay, Bruce left them with Alfred and Dick, in a clear attempt to not make the recently presented omega feel uncomfortable with an alpha not related by blood in the room.
The butler retrieved a special medical equipment modified to be useful with kryptonians, and draw blood for analysis, after that he left the family with Dick Grayson just to be interrogated, or at least that was how the boy felt it, the questions were related to his heat and the symptoms he had during it, that was mortifying.
After noticing Jon's embarrassment his parents decided to give him privacy, in hopes that would make him feel better; after a few more questions Dick ended and invited his guardians to join them again.
“It seems to be a regular heat, nothing out of order, but it could be good to search for a trustworthy specialist, if that gives you problems, maybe someone from internal medicine. I always go to doctor Thompkins when there’s an issue associated with my vigilante life.”
“Thanks for the help Dick” said Clark, giving the other a squeeze on the shoulder while Lois Lane smothered Jonathan’s hair lovingly.
The four of them walked out of the medical bay and joined the alphas and Alfred in the bat computer, but as they neared them the young omega just clinged to his mothers side, and that didn’t go unnoticed by his parents.
“Jonathan’s blood results are being processed, they will be ready later in the day,” announced Bruce. “Would you like to stay for dinner?”
“We wouldn’t want to impose,” was Clark’s response.
“Of course not, you're all welcome. Plus the more the merrier, these last days are only Damian and me in this big mansion.”
“If you said so then there's no reason to say no,” the kryptonian accepted.
“Dinner will be ready in a few minutes, sir,” announced Alfred in that British accent of his.
“Thank you. We will be heading up for it.”
Bruce took the opportunity to get his son out of the cave for a few hours and spined his chair for the boy to face their guests. “You hear it, son. Go get ready for dinner, the case is almost solved. Oracle will call us if there's something new.”
“Father, there’s…”
“Nothing more you could do at the moment, go clear your head for a little while.”
Damian rolled his eyes and got up, he saluted the Kent family before leaving the cave, and Jonathan couldn’t stop himself from turn his nose, searching for his alpha friend’s scent that wasn’t masked by anything.
The others walked out of the lair a little after that, and minutes later they were sitting at the dining hall, where Damian appeared freshly showered and took his place at the table, just at his father's right side.
The younger omega searched for the alpha's scent one more time, but he just perceived it masked with a scent patch and the special soaps and perfume used to mask natural scents, that made him feel a little frustrated.
For the rest of the dinner the adults were the ones in charge of the small talk, Jonathan just kept glancing at Damian from time to time, questioning himself if his friend would not be anymore just because of his secondary gender. He cursed himself for not asking that important question a few months ago, when he was pestering Damian with those silly things he saw on the internet, he should have asked if Damian would still be his partner if he was an omega, instead of asking him if he’ll still be his friend if Jon would be turned a worm.
When all of them were with stomach full and empty plates Bruce offered to open a bottle of wine, and the adults happily accepted, Damian simply thanked the food and stood up leaving the dining hall making his way to the library, the other teenager stared longingly at the hall entrance where he disappeared. His mother gave him a squeeze in the knee and made a gesture towards the entrance, giving him permission to leave the table too, saying his thanks and excusing himself he exited the hall too, near the library entrance he heard his mother speaking loud and clearly.
“Leave the door open.”
“Mooooooooom! Ugh,” the embarrassment kept him outside of the library for a few seconds, and still blushing thanks to his mother's statement he entered the room, searching for his friend who was sitting on an armchair with a book in his hands. “Uh… Hi.”
The other looked up and arched an eyebrow.
“What? Are you suddenly all shy?”
“Uh… Noooooh…” he fidgeted under the watchful eye of the alpha. “I just… wanted to apologize for the other day,” hearing this he closed his book and put it down.
“What for?”
“Uhhh… The ahh… you know… for ahh invading… uhhh your personal space?”
“ You mean in the fortress, I assume.”
“Yes…”
“TT. Don’t trouble yourself, Jonathan. You were panicking.”
“Yes, but I know you don’t like being touched, so… sorry for making you feel uncomfortable.”
“I’m just not used to it, not that I hate it or something like that. You don’t have to apologize for doing it.”
“Uh… Oh… Cool… So… If you don't hate it…” his blushing increased “can I… uh… hugh you one more time?”
The older sighed and got up “Okay.” Awkwardly opened his arms and the younger immediately sticked like a limpet, while the alpha gave him a few pats to his back. “There there,” said calmly, the youngest whimpered. “Jonathan? Are you okay?”
“Noohh. I don’t like being an omega,” his voice sounded muffled since his face was hidden in the other’s sweater.
“Why? Did someone give you problems already?” Jonathan perceived a little bit of concern in his voice.
“No… But now mom wouldn’t let me join you in the Titans.”
“Oh… Did she say that?”
“Not to me. But I heard her talking with my dad during my heat, she doesn't like the idea of me sharing a place with older alphas that are also more experienced in combat than me.”
“Well, I can comprehend where it comes from, but if any of them aren’t capable of selfcontrol with an omega they shouldn’t be part of the Titans.”
“I know, but there's no way she’s gonna let me.”
“I know you have been waiting for it, but you don't need to be in any team just to be a great hero.”
“But… but… I want to be with you.”
“TT. We are already a duo corncob, we don't need the Titans, we even have our own base.”
“You promise?”
“Promise what?”
“To always be partners,” he looked up and made puppy eyes.
The older couldn’t help feeling a little irritated since it was clear the boy was taking advantage of the situation to make him agree and accept one of his childish promises, but given that the other was shaken with the new revelation he just agreed.
“Okay”, he huffed, “I promise.”
“Really?!” he almost jumped happily “Pinky promise?”
“Don’t test your luck.”
“Ugh… You’re not fun.”
The alpha simply rolled his eyes.
“Jon, we’re leaving,” his mother called for him.
“On my way, mom!” he released his friend and gave him a hopeful look. “See you for patrol?”
“Yes, when you finish all the homework you lose this last week.”
The younger one groaned. “Understand. See you later, Dame.”
They accompanied the family to the door where they took off and flew away to Metropolis.
Once in his parents’ apartment the boy sunk on his bed, he was staring at the glow in the dark stars that were on his ceiling, then he heard a knock on his window, he got up and lifted the curtains. The first superboy was there and smiled at him, which made him open the window and let the other in.
“Kon, what are you doing here?” he asked happily.
“Just returned after a mission with Just Us, Ma and Pa surprised me with the news that you presented,” he said while flying to Jonathan's bed where he joined him. “Here I was, believing that I was the only hybrid kryptonian with a secondary gender,” he ruffled the others' hair.
“You’re still the only kryptonian that is an alpha. I wish I could be an alpha just like you.”
“I know I’m so cool and you want to be like me,” he said jokingly, “ but you don’t need to be an alpha to be this cool.”
“But I don’t want to be an omega. Why couldn’t I just be an alpha like you? Why does the strange mix between kryptonian and human DNA not pick up alphas genes?”
“Well, you’re not a clone genetically selected to have the best attributes from his DNA donors, you were born out of love kiddo, don’t let something like this bother you.”
“But… I!! I'm a kryptonian! What alpha on earth would like an omega stronger than them?”
“You could search out of earth. There's tamaraneans, or someone without a secondary gender like someone from Thanagar. It doesn’t have to be the end of the world Jon, if you really want someone stronger than you without leaving the earth you could try with an amazon, or maybe even an atlantean.”
The boy hummed, “Aqualad is handsome, but I really don’t see myself dating someone that uses a speedo as his fighting suit.”
The young man laughed.
“Come on, he stopped using that thong some time ago. Besides, your dearest Nightwing started with one of those as well.”
“Hey! Nightwing didn’t use a thong or a speedo, they were gymnastic shorts.”
The other clacked. “Don’t laugh, he was a great Robin.”
“Well, not as good as my partner.”
“No-oh. He’s one of the best, the best only after Damian, I mean, I know Dick was the first Robin, but no one is better than Damian he’s so smart and…”
“Yeah yeah, I know you like him very much Jon. You don’t need to brag about how cool your crush is with me,” with this the other visibly deflated. “Oh Rao! Could it be…? Did that…? Did that gremlin scorn you for being an omega? That little scum will see.”
“Noooooh. Please don’t do anything to Damian. He didn’t scorn me, we’re okay.”
“Oh… Good! But if someone does it, you tell me and I’ll make them pay.”
“Please don’t. I can manage my own battles, I’m capable enough. I already have my mom being over protective and never letting me join the Titans just because they’re alphas. Rao! She even didn’t let me close the library door and be alone with Damian. As if… As if Damian will jump me! He wouldn’t…! He wouldn’t even see me like that,” the boy deflated thinking that his friend wouldn’t see him with any kind of desire or romantic affection towards him.
“Oh. So that’s what got you all upset? You think he would never like you back.”
“I don’t think that, I know it. He comes from an alpha family, his mother is an all mighty alpha and his father is Batman, another strong alpha, why would he want to be with an omega like me?”
“That’s what bothered you about being an omega? Not being an option for your alpha friend? Because if it is, let me tell you that if he thinks you’re not worthy of him just for your secondary gender, he isn’t a good option for anyone, but you already said he didn’t seem bothered by it.”
“He isn’t. But just because he didn’t look down on me doesn't mean he likes omegas. We’re weak and he always values good fighters.”
“Okay. First, you know omegas being weak is a stupid stereotype claimed by dumb alphas, or do you think Ma is weak?”
“Uhh… No.”
“Exactly. Secondly, you’re the son of the man of steel, you’re something like... the boy of steel, you just said that there’s no alpha stronger than you on the earth. You’re stronger than any of those bats, you already prove that you’re someone worthy to be called a hero, so don’t fill your head with those stupid ideas.”
“You’re right. But that doesn’t mean Damian can’t have his preferences with alphas to form a family, maybe even his mother encouraged it.”
“Maybe, maybe not. If you want to know you just have to ask him.”
“There’s no way I’ll ask him! What if… what if he punches me in the face and says that he never wants to see me again.”
“Come on, I don't think he will be so stupid to punch you in the face, what harm would that do to you?”
“You’re right, he will use kryptonite instead.”
“Hey. From what I know his father confiscated all of his kryptonite stashes.”
“Uhg. That comforts me,” he said sarcastically.
“Hey, if you aren’t planning on doing something about it there's no reason for you to torment yourself. What about some pizza to celebrate your presentation? It's on me.”
“Okay.”
The boy let his preoccupations slip away while eating a slice of pizza.
