Lucy looked up when she heard the front door unlock. A quick look to her watch confirming that Celina should not be back from court yet. Maybe the case was an easy solve?
In one smooth movement, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, heading into the living room. And surely, there stood Celina, her back turned to her as she hung up her jacket.
“Hey! You’re home early.”, Lucy started, leaning against the door frame. “Yeah. New things came up and the court decided to adjourn the hearing.”, Celina answered dryly, her voice sounding strangely hoarse… She didn’t look in Lucy’s direction once.
That was… unusual…
“There’s some lasagne in the oven if you want some. It’s your favorite!”
“No thanks. I already ate.”, Celina mumbled, heading for the sink to fill up a glass of water, which she chucked it down in one go. Was she deliberately trying to hide her face..?
“Celina? Look at me.”, Lucy bid firmly, approaching her but she turned away.
“I’ll go to sleep. I’m tired.”, she simply said, heading for her room, but Lucy wasn’t having that. She knew that something was wrong and she didn’t like how Celina tried to hide something so bad.
“Celina, wait. Celina!-”
Lucy hadn’t meant to, she really didn’t. But when her roommate didn’t stop walking, her hand shot out and grabbed the younger woman’s wrist.
Out of instinct, Celina whirled around, trying to free her hand- and what Lucy saw sent shivers down her spine.
Celina’s face was red and her eyes glassy as if she had been crying- was that blood in her hair?
“Celina… what happened?”, Lucy mumbled, the shock on her face evident but Celina shut down.
“I tripped and fell. Let me go.”, she spoke flatly, though her jaw clenched.
“You tripped and fell, are you-”, Lucy stopped upon her eyes twitching downward, noticing a small crimson line on her throat.
“Is that a cut??”
“There was glass on the floor, it’s not that big of a deal. Now let me go.”, Celina demanded, emphasizing every word with a look on her face Lucy had never seen before in all their years of living together. Was that terror? Anger? Fear? She couldn’t even tell.
“I’m not letting you go until you tell me what happened.”, Lucy stressed, her grip around Celina’s wrist only tightening. She didn’t want to hurt her friend, she really didn’t but something had happened and she wouldn’t let Celina stand alone with this.
“Who did this?”, she asked firmly, pointing to her neck and bloody temple. “No one did anything, I tripped and fell.”, Celina answered, her voice alarmingly low.
“I don’t believe that, Celina.”
“That’s too damn bad, now let me go! You’re hurting me!”, Celina shouted, raising her voice for the first time ever, pulling so hard that her skin burned. But Lucy didn’t let go.
“Talk to me. Please!”, Lucy begged, holding her wrist only tighter until Celina stopped moving, staring dead into her eyes.
“I really don’t want to hurt you. But that doesn’t mean I won’t. Let. Me. Go.”, she growled, anger flaring up in her eyes- and Lucy complied. Shocked. Too shocked to say anything. Did Celina just threaten her?-
For a moment longer, Celina stared at her, pulling her arm back, covering the swelling Lucy had caused with her grip- before she turned around, went into her room and kicked the door shut.
What had she done..?
